Infant light adaptation shows Weber's law at photopic illuminances

Photopic Adaptation Mimicked by Y2O3-Based Optoelectronic Memristor for Neuromorphic Visual System

Visual adaptation is one of the most significant features that helps organisms process complicated image information in time-varying environments. Emulating this function is highly desirable for energy-efficient image perception. In this work, we demonstrate an yttrium oxide (Y2O3)-based optoelectronic memristor and emulate photopic adaptation behavior in a single device. Decay amplitude and photosensitivity are indexed to describe the time-dependent characteristics of photopic adaptation. An intensity-dependent characteristic, namely Weber's law, is also investigated in this work. Photopic adaptation originates from the trapping of photogenerated carriers in oxygen vacancies. Based on photopic adaptation behavior, a neuromorphic vision system capable of adapting to environmental brightness is constructed using the proposed optoelectronic memristor array. Memristor arrays can emulate sensing and adaptation functions in order to enhance images against bright backgrounds. Our work provides a feasible pathway toward self-adaptive neuromorphic vision systems.

Direction-selective adaptation from implied motion in infancy

We investigated whether adaptation from implied motion (IM) is transferred to real motion using optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) in infants. Specifically, we examined whether viewing a series of images depicting motion shifted infants' OKN responses to the opposite direction of random dot kinematograms (RDKs). Each RDK was presented 10 times in a pre-test, followed by 10 trials of IM adaptation and test. During the pre-test, the signal dots of the RDK moved left or right. During IM adaptation, 10 randomly selected images depicting leftward (or rightward) IM were presented. In the test, the RDK was presented immediately after the last IM image. An observer, blinded to the motion direction, assessed the OKN direction. The number of matches in OKN responses for each RDK direction was calculated as the match ratio of OKN. We conducted a two-way mixed analysis of variance, with age group (5-6 months and 7-8 months) as the between-participant factor and adaptation (pre-test and test) as the within-participant factor. Only in 7-8 months the OKN responses were shifted in the opposite direction of RDK by viewing a series of images depicting motion, and these infants could detect both IM and RDK motion directions in the pre-test. Our results indicate that detecting the IM and RDK directions might induce direction-selective adaptation in 7-8 months.

The transition from scotopic to photopic vision in 3-month-old infants and adults: an evaluation of the rod dominance hypothesis

The scotopic to photopic transition was tested in adults and 12-week-old infants using a large field motion nulling technique at a series of luminances between -3.57 and 2.70 log cd m(-2). The stimuli were composed of 0.25 cyc deg(-1), 5.6 Hz blue/black and yellow/black sinusoidal grating components, superimposed and moving in opposite directions. The contrasts of the two components were traded off to determine motion nulls at each luminance level. An eye movement based response measure was used for infant subjects, whereas self-report was used in adults. In both age groups, the motion null values approached a scotopic asymptote consistent with V'(lambda) at the lowest luminance levels, and a photopic asymptote consistent with V(10)(lambda) at the highest luminance levels. The scotopic to photopic transition was gradual and occurred over about 3 log units between about -2 and 1 log cd m(-2) in both groups. The null values for infants and adults were highly similar at each luminance level, and the shapes of the transition curves were virtually identical at the two ages. These data suggest that at each different luminance level, the balance between rod-initiated and cone-initiated signals in the extrafoveal luminance channel is similar or identical in 12-week-old infants and adults.
