Spatial and temporal proximity of objects for maximal crowding

Crowding refers to the deleterious visual interaction among nearby objects. Does maximal crowding occur when objects are closest to one another in space and time? We examined how crowding depends on the spatial and temporal proximity, retinally and perceptually, between a target and flankers. Our target was a briefly flashed T-stimulus presented at 10° right of fixation (3-o'clock position). It appeared at different target-onset-to-flanker asynchronies with respect to the instant when a pair of flanking Ts, revolving around the fixation target, reached the 3-o'clock position. Observers judged the orientation of the target-T (the crowding task), or its position relative to the revolving flankers (the flash-lag task). Performance was also measured in the absence of flanker motion: target and flankers were either presented simultaneously (closest retinal temporal proximity) with different angular spatial offsets, or were presented collinearly (closest retinal spatial proximity) with different temporal onset asynchronies. We found that neither retinal nor perceptual spatial or temporal proximity could account for when maximal crowding occurred. Simulations using a model based on feed-forward interactions between sustained and transient channels in static and motion pathways, taking into account the differential response latencies, can explain the crowding functions observed under various spatio-temporal conditions between the target and flankers.

Illusory position shift induced by plaid motion

In the motion-induced position shift (MIPS), the position of a moving pattern tapered by a stationary envelope is perceived to shift in the direction of the motion. It was found that plaid motion also elicited a MIPS in the direction of global motion and this global MIPS could not be predicted by the average of the local MIPSs due to component motions. We also used a pseudo plaid pattern and again observed a global MIPS that could not be predicted by the local MIPSs due to the components of the pseudo plaid pattern. We suggest the possibility that the receptive-field positions of global motion detectors shift in the direction opposite to global motion, resulting in a positional displacement in activation via population coding.

Neural Correlate of Vernier Acuity Tasks Assessed by Functional MRI (fMRI)

Vernier acuity refers to the ability to discern a small offset within a line. However, while Vernier acuity has been extensively studied psychophysically, its neural correlates are uncertain. Based upon previous psychophysical and electrophysiologic data, we hypothesized that extrastriate areas of the brain would be involved in Vernier acuity tasks, so we designed event-related functional MRI (fMRI) paradigms to identify cortical regions of the brain involved in this behavior. Normal subjects identified suprathreshold and subthreshold Vernier offsets. The results suggest a cortical network including frontal, parietal, occipital, and cerebellar regions subserves the observation, processing, interpretation, and acknowledgment of briefly presented Vernier offsets.

Precision of position signals for letters

Accurate reading of words and text relies on reliable identification of letters in left-to-right order. Previous studies have shown that people often make letter-reversal errors when identifying strings of letters away from fixation. These errors contribute to a decline in letter identification performance away from fixation. This study tests the hypothesis that these errors are due to decreased precision (increased position noise) in the coding of letter position in the periphery. To test our hypothesis, we measured observers' performance for identifying pairs of adjacent letters presented within eight letter positions left and right of fixation. The task was to name the two letters of each pair, from left to right. Responses were scored in two ways for each letter position: (1) letters were identified correctly and in the correct position, and (2) letters were identified correctly but in the wrong position. The ratio of these two scores, when subtracted from 1, gives the empirical rate of mislocation errors. Our primary finding shows that the coding of letter position becomes increasingly imprecise with distance from fixation. A model in which the encoded position of each letter is independent and Gaussian distributed, and in which the spread of the distribution governs the precision of localizing the letter accounts for the empirical rate of mislocation errors. We also found that precision of letter position coding scales with letter size but the precision does not improve with the use of a pre-cue.

Relationship between threshold and suprathreshold perception of position and stereoscopic depth

We seek to determine the relationship between threshold and suprathreshold perception for position offset and stereoscopic depth perception under conditions that elevate their respective thresholds. Two threshold-elevating conditions were used: (1) increasing the interline gap and (2) dioptric blur. Although increasing the interline gap increases position (Vernier) offset and stereoscopic disparity thresholds substantially, the perception of suprathreshold position offset and stereoscopic depth remains unchanged. Perception of suprathreshold position offset also remains unchanged when the Vernier threshold is elevated by dioptric blur. We show that such normalization of suprathreshold position offset can be attributed to the topographical-map-based encoding of position. On the other hand, dioptric blur increases the stereoscopic disparity thresholds and reduces the perceived suprathreshold stereoscopic depth, which can be accounted for by a disparity-computation model in which the activities of absolute disparity encoders are multiplied by a Gaussian weighting function that is centered on the horopter. Overall, the statement "equal suprathreshold perception occurs in threshold-elevated and unelevated conditions when the stimuli are equally above their corresponding thresholds" describes the results better than the statement "suprathreshold stimuli are perceived as equal when they are equal multiples of their respective threshold values."

Spatial and temporal properties of the illusory motion-induced position shift for drifting stimuli

The perceived position of a stationary Gaussian window of a Gabor target shifts in the direction of motion of the Gabor's carrier stimulus, implying the presence of interactions between the specialized visual areas that encode form, position, and motion. The purpose of this study was to examine the temporal and spatial properties of this illusory motion-induced position shift (MIPS). We measured the magnitude of the MIPS for a pair of horizontally separated (2 or 8deg) truncated-Gabor stimuli (carrier=1 or 4cpd sinusoidal grating, Gaussian envelope SD=18arc min, 50% contrast) or a pair of Gaussian-windowed random-texture patterns that drifted vertically in opposite directions. The magnitude of the MIPS was measured for drift speeds up to 16deg/s and for stimulus durations up to 453ms. The temporal properties of the MIPS depended on the drift speed. At low velocities, the magnitude of the MIPS increased monotonically with the stimulus duration. At higher velocities, the magnitude of the MIPS increased with duration initially, then decreased between approximately 45 and 75ms before rising to reach a steady-state value at longer durations. In general, the magnitude of the MIPS was larger when the truncated-Gabor or random-texture stimuli were more spatially separated, but was similar for the different types of carrier stimuli. Our results are consistent with a framework that suggests that perceived form is modulated dynamically during stimulus motion.

Apparent position in depth of stationary moving three-dimensional objects

Motion signals contained within a stationary object projected on the fronto-parallel plane shift the object's apparent spatial position in the direction of the motion [see De Valois, R. L., & De Valois, K. K. (1991). Vernier acuity with stationary moving Gabors. Vision Research, 31(9), 1619-1626]. We report an analogous apparent position shift of three-dimensional objects that contain local elements that move in depth. Our stimulus was a transparent three-dimensional cylinder defined by 150 limited-lifetime dots, oriented such that it was end on and its tangent plane was circular. Dots moved in depth by changes in their binocular disparities. In the first experiment, observers judged the positions of the near and far ends of the cylinder, by moving marker lines in depth, for different dot speeds. The results showed that when dots moved towards the observer, the perceived location of the two ends of the cylinder appeared closer in depth. When dots moved away from the observer, the opposite effect was produced. Additionally, the amount of apparent position shift produced was dependent on dot speed, with faster speeds producing larger positional offsets. However, we found in the second experiment that when the cylinder contained randomly moving dots, or when the cylinder contained equal amounts of dots moving towards and away from the observer, positional shifts were very much reduced, or abolished. Our findings suggest that motion signals can induce a misperception of position in depth that is similar manner to that produced by motion within an object in the two-dimensional image plane.

Elevation of Vernier thresholds during image motion depends on target configuration

Previously we showed that thresholds for abutting Vernier targets are unaffected by motion, as long as the targets are processed by the same spatial-frequency channel at each velocity and remain equally detectable [Invest. Ophthalmol. Visual Sci. (Suppl.) 37, S734 (1996)]. In this study we compared Vernier thresholds for stationary and moving abutting and nonabutting targets (gaps = 0, 18, and 36 arc min) for velocities of 0-16 deg/s. The Vernier targets were spatially filtered vertical lines (peak spatial frequency = 3.3 or 6.6 c/deg), presented at contrast levels of two, four, and eight times the detection threshold of each component line. Unlike the results for abutting targets, Vernier thresholds for nonabutting targets worsen with velocity as well as gap size. The results for abutting Vernier targets are consistent with the hypothesis that thresholds are mediated by oriented spatial filters, whose responses increase proportionally with the stimulus contrast. The velocity-dependent thresholds found for nonabutting Vernier targets can be explained on the basis of local-sign comparisons if the comparison process is assumed to include a small amount of temporal noise.
