Characteristics of nitrate horizontal transport in a paddy field of the Tai Lake region, China

Severe photochemical pollution formation associated with strong HONO emissions from dew and guttation evaporation

The unknown daytime source of HONO has been extensively investigated due to unexplained atmospheric oxidation capacity and current modelling bias, especially during cold seasons. In this study, abrupt morning increases in atmospheric HONO at a rural site in the North China Plain (NCP) were observed almost on daily basis, which were closely linked to simultaneous rises in atmospheric water vapor content and NH3 concentrations. Dew and guttation water formation was frequently observed on wheat leaves, from which water samples were taken and chemically analyzed for the first time. Results confirmed that such natural processes likely governed the daily nighttime deposition and daytime release of HONO and NH3, which have not been considered in the numerous HONO budget studies investigating its large missing daytime source in the NCP. The dissolved HONO and NH3 in leaf surface water droplets reached 1.4 and 23 mg L-1 during the morning on average, resulting in averaged atmospheric HONO and NH3 increases of 0.89 ± 0.61 and 43.7 ± 29.3 ppb during morning hours, with relative increases of 186 ± 212 % and 233 ± 252 %, respectively. The high atmospheric oxidation capacity contained within HONO was stored in near surface liquid water (such as dew, guttation and soil surface water) during nighttime, which prevented its atmospheric dispersion after sunset and protected it from photodissociation during early morning hours. HONO was released in a blast during later hours with stronger solar radiation, which triggered and then accelerated daytime photochemistry through the rapid photolysis of HONO and subsequent OH production, especially under high RH conditions, forming severe secondary gaseous and particulate pollution. Results of this study demonstrate that global ecosystems might play significant roles in atmospheric photochemistry through nighttime dew formation and guttation processes.

Different effects of the application of urea combined with nitrification inhibitor on cadmium activity in the rice-rape rotation system

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most harmful and widespread pollutants in agricultural soil, where it is readily taken up by plants and threatens human health through the food chain. Nitrification inhibitors (NIs) are usually used to reduce nitrogen (N) loss in soil and increase the nitrogen use efficiency of crops. However, information regarding the Cd transfer in soil and crops system with the application of urea combined with NIs is limited. Especially, the influences of NIs on Cd availability in the rice-rape rotation are unclear. Here, we studied the pH, N speciation, and Cd activity in soils, as well as Cd accumulation in rice and rapeseed tissues that resulted after the application of dicyandiamide (DCD) and 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) under alternating redox conditions. Rice and rape experiments appeared to represent an opposite phenomenon in the treatments of urea + NIs. Addition of NIs increased the pH of paddy soil, but decreased the pH of rapeseed soil. The treatments of urea + DCD and urea + DMPP0.5% produced a significantly lower concentration of extractable Cd in the paddy soil, and reduced the accumulation of Cd in brown rice. For rapeseed, the urea + NI treatments enhanced the Cd activity and increased the accumulation of Cd in rapeseed. It is proposed that NIs could be used to regulate N transformation in agricultural soils and inhibited Cd uptake by rice in urea fertilization. Moreover, the application of NIs combined with urea would potentially favor phytoextraction of Cd by rape, which is a ideal candidate for phytoremediation in Cd-contaminated soil.

Studies on seasonal pollution of heavy metals in water, sediment, fish and oyster from the Meiliang Bay of Taihu Lake in China

The present study, seasonal pollution of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr and Cu) in water, sediment, tissues of fish Carassius carassius and oyster Crassostrea gigas were determined at seven sampling sites from Meiliang Bay, Taihu Lake during one year calendar, 2016. The total heavy metal concentrations in water samples were higher in winter and summer than in spring and autumn season, whereas in sediment they were higher in winter and summer seasons, respectively. The trend of metal mean contents found in the fish and oyster were in decreasing order of Pb > Cu > Cr > Cd and Pb > Cu > Cr > Cd, respectively. The tissues of fish and oyster captured during winter and summer accumulated a higher significant different amount of metals relative to other season, which was attributed to a higher influx of agricultural waste, sewage and sludge by heavy rainfall and floods. In addition, the pollution load index (PLI) values were above one (>1), indicating an advanced decline of the sediment quality, and contamination factor (CF) confirmed that the sediment samples were moderate to high contamination by Pb and Cr. Thus, comparative studies with seasonal pollution of heavy metals in Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu regions indicate considerable heavy metal enrichment in water, sediments as well as in various organs of fish and oyster. Finally, our results indicated that the metal concentration values increased statistically significant different related to season (p < 0.001). The determination of heavy metal stress biomarkers in fish along with seasonal variations may serve as a convenient approach during pollution bio-monitoring programme.

Rainfall-induced nutrient losses from manure-fertilized farmland in an alluvial plain

Nutrient transport and loss in farmlands are affected by factors such as land cover, fertilization, soil type, rainfall, and management practices. We investigated the temporal and spatial changes in macronutrient transport and loss after fertilization and precipitation in manure-fertilized eggplant farmland in an alluvial plain. Upon adding topical fertilizer, concentrations of most nutrients in runoff and groundwater increased, and nitrogen runoff increased from 22.11 to 35.81 kg/ha, although eggplant yield did not increase correspondingly. Incorporation of fertilizer by plowing reduced nutrient losses (nitrogen runoff/fertilizer decreased from 18.40 to 12.29 %). Measurements taken along the nutrient transport route (runoff, drainage ditch, groundwater, river water, and finally rainfall) revealed that concentrations of most nutrients declined at each stage. Nutrient characteristics varied by transport, and the forms of nitrogen and phosphorus differed greatly between runoff and groundwater (nitrate/nitrogen in runoff was ~43.49 %, while in groundwater ~5.41 %). Most nutrient concentrations in runoff decreased greatly during the planting season (total nitrogen decreased from 62.25 to 4.17 mg/L), correlated positively with temperature and stage of plant growth, but little temporal change was observed in groundwater. This field investigation during one planting season exemplifies the basic principles of nutrient loss and transport from manure-fertilized farmland in an alluvial plain.

Identifying diffused nitrate sources in a stream in an agricultural field using a dual isotopic approach

Nitrate (NO3(-)) pollution is a severe problem in aquatic systems in Taihu Lake Basin in China. A dual isotope approach (δ(15)NNO3(-) and δ(18)ONO3(-)) was applied to identify diffused NO3(-) inputs in a stream in an agricultural field at the basin in 2013. The site-specific isotopic characteristics of five NO3(-) sources (atmospheric deposition, AD; NO3(-) derived from soil organic matter nitrification, NS; NO3(-) derived from chemical fertilizer nitrification, NF; groundwater, GW; and manure and sewage, M&S) were identified. NO3(-) concentrations in the stream during the rainy season [mean±standard deviation (SD)=2.5±0.4mg/L] were lower than those during the dry season (mean±SD=4.0±0.5mg/L), whereas the δ(18)ONO3(-) values during the rainy season (mean±SD=+12.3±3.6‰) were higher than those during the dry season (mean±SD=+0.9±1.9‰). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that mixing with atmospheric NO3(-) resulted in the high δ(18)O values during the rainy season, whereas NS and M&S were the dominant NO3(-) sources during the dry season. A Bayesian model was used to determine the contribution of each NO3(-) source to total stream NO3(-). Results showed that reduced N nitrification in soil zones (including soil organic matter and fertilizer) was the main NO3(-) source throughout the year. M&S contributed more NO3(-) during the dry season (22.4%) than during the rainy season (17.8%). AD generated substantial amounts of NO3(-) in May (18.4%), June (29.8%), and July (24.5%). With the assessment of temporal variation of diffused NO3(-) sources in agricultural field, improved agricultural management practices can be implemented to protect the water resource and avoid further water quality deterioration in Taihu Lake Basin.

Seasonal changes in the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in farmland drainage and groundwater of the Taihu Lake region of China

To reduce the harmful effects of irrigated agriculture on the environment, the evaluation of alternative irrigation water management practices is essential. The contents of total-phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen in rural aquatic bodies typical of the Taihu Lake region (Yixing, Wangzhuang, and Xinzhuang) were determined during 2 years. The results showed that the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus during the rainy season were higher than in other months. The concentration of ammonium nitrogen in farmland drainage was higher than that of nitrate nitrogen. Ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen were the main pollution sources in rural groundwater. However, the pollution by ammonium nitrogen was worse than nitrate nitrogen. The annual average values of ammonium nitrogen in Yixing and Wangzhuang were 1.596 and 2.103 mg L(-1); with maximum values of 5.782 and 5.441 mg L(-1), respectively, exceeding the lower limit for type V water quality by a factor of 10. Concentrations of nitrate nitrogen in groundwater in Xinzhuang from May to September exceeded the limit value (10 mg L(-1)) for drinking water prescribed by the World Health Organization. Therefore, this groundwater was not suitable to drink. In Taihu Lake, the average concentration of phosphorus over 2 years was 0.492 mg L(-1) and pollution by phosphorus in Taihu Lake was worse than other farmland drainage because of the trend of total-phosphorus accumulation. In addition, the average concentrations of nitrate nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen in Taihu Lake were 2.152 and 2.885 mg L(-1), respectively over 2 years, indicating that the water in the Taihu Lake is constantly in danger of eutrophication. Because of the transformation of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen, there was a connection between the concentrations of ammonium nitrogen in farmland drainage and nitrate nitrogen in groundwater. There was also a significant positive linear correlation between the concentrations of ammonium nitrogen in farmland drainage and in shallow groundwater.

Evaluation of nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethyl pyrazole phosphate on nitrogen leaching in undisturbed soil columns

The application of nitrogen fertilizers leads to various ecological problems such as nitrate leaching. The use of nitrification inhibitors (NI) as nitrate leaching retardants is a proposal that has been suggested for inclusion in regulations in many countries. In this study, the efficacy of the new NI, 3,4-dimethyl pyrazole phosphate (DMPP), was tested under simulated high-risk leaching situations in two types of undisturbed soil columns. The results showed that the accumulative leaching losses of soil nitrate under treatment of urea with 1.0% DMPP, from columns of silt loam soil and heavy clay soil, were 66.8% and 69.5% lower than those soil columns tested with regular urea application within the 60 days observation, respectively. However, the losses of ammonium leaching were reversely increased 9.7% and 6.7% under the former treatment than the latter one. Application of regular urea with 1.0% DMPP addition can reduce about 59.3%-63.1% of total losses of inorganic nitrogen via leaching. The application of DMPP to urea had stimulated the inhibition effects of DMPP on the ammonium nitrification process in the soil up to 60 days. It is proposed that the DMPP could be used as an effective NI to control inorganic N leaching losses, minimizing the risk of nitrate pollution in shallow groundwater.
