Occurrence of non-ortho, mono-ortho and di-ortho substituted PCB congeners in polecats, stone martens and badgers from the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Interspecies comparison of chlorinated contaminant concentrations and profiles in wild terrestrial mammals from northwest Poland

The aim of this study was to determine residual polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides in the adipose tissue of wild terrestrial mammals coming from the same area in northwest Poland and to compare the organochlorine content and profile between species. The study was performed on five mammalian species, including omnivores (badger, wild boar, raccoon dog) and herbivores (roe deer, red deer). The obtained results show that the levels of residues of most of the analyzed compounds were greater in omnivorous mammals than herbivorous mammals. We found differences in the pattern of accumulation of organochlorines. In the raccoon dog organochlorines accumulated in the following descending order: DDTs > PCBs > HCHs > endrin > dieldrin; in the badger, wild boar, and roe deer, the order was as follows: DDTs > HCHs > PCBs > endrin > dieldrin; and in red deer, the order was as follows: HCHs > DDTs > PCBs > endrin > dieldrin. PCB 153 was dominant in herbivores and in the wild boar, whereas in the raccoon dog it was lower than PCB 138 and in badger lower than PCB 180. These differences in the tested species may reflect differences in metabolic capacity and/or feeding habits and an uneven distribution of organochlorines in the area where the animals lived. Maximum residue levels (MRLs) were exceeded in single samples from animals whose meat and fat can be consumed by humans. The greatest number of cases where MRLs were exceeded was observed in the adipose tissue of the badger (HCHs, DDTs, endrin, non-dioxin-like PCBs) and the fewest in the adipose tissue of roe deer (only lindane).

Mercury in various tissues of three mustelid species and other trace metals in liver of European otter from Eastern Finland

Mercury concentrations were monitored in European otter (Lutra lutra), European polecat (Mustela putorius) and European pine marten (Martes martes) collected in Eastern Finland during the period 1972-2008. Otters mainly eat fish, which is an important reason to monitor the bioaccumulation of mercury in this predator. In this species, the highest concentrations were found in fur followed by liver and kidney, and the mercury concentrations increased with increasing age and body weight. Males showed in general higher concentrations than females of otters. The food of European polecat consists of small mammals, frogs, birds and insects from both aquatic and terrestrial food chains. The mercury concentrations were lower than in otters without significant differences related to body weight or sex. In European pine martens, the concentrations were rather evenly distributed except for two specimens with high concentrations. Also, concentrations of some other metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were analysed from liver samples of otter. Possible adverse effects of mercury on the Finnish populations of these mustelids are discussed.

Polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorinated pesticides, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the cerebral cortex of wild river otters (Lontra canadensis)

We measured the levels of ortho-substituted polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), organochlorinated pesticides (OCP), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in the cerebral cortex of river otters (Lontra canadensis) trapped from Ontario and Nova Scotia between 2002 and 2004. The mean concentration of total PCBs was 70.9+/-12.1 ng/g l.w., and congeners 153, 180 and 138 accounted for nearly 60% of the sum. The mean concentration of total OCPs was 21.2+/-3.7 ng/g l.w., and hexachlorobenzene (32.6% of total) and DDE (28.1%) accounted for the majority. The mean concentration of total PBDEs was 3.2+/-0.6 ng/g l.w., and congeners 99 (44.9%), 153 (30.5%), and 100 (24.7%) were measured at the indicated percentages. There was no relationship between these residue data and concentrations of brain mercury or neurochemical receptors and enzymes as determined in earlier studies on these same animals.

Interlaboratory comparison exercise for the analysis of PCDD/Fs in samples of digested sewage sludge

Five UK laboratories participated in a study designed to explore the principal sources of interlaboratory variation in the analysis of PCDD/Fs in sewage sludge. Samples of wet sludge, dry sludge, toluene extract of sludge and cleaned extract of sludge were prepared by an organising laboratory. The samples were analysed in duplicate by each laboratory along with a solution of PCDD/F standards and reference sediment. Mean coefficients of variation between laboratories were 45% for the wet sludge, 33% for the dry sludge, 32% for the extract of sludge, 36% for the cleaned extract of sludge, 32% for the reference sediment and 28% for the standard solution. The results were subjected to statistical analysis, which showed that there was no specific part of the analysis that introduced a dominant part of the variation. The spread of data generated from the analysis of wet sludge samples was not appreciably greater than the spread for the analysis of cleaned extracts. Thus the drying, extraction and clean up processes in the PCDD/F analysis of wet sludge did not have a dramatic effect on the interlaboratory variation.

PCBs and their putative effects on polecat (Mustela putorius) populations in Central Europe

In Europe polecat populations are declining for unknown reasons during the last decades. Data on the river otter, another mustelid predator, indicate that PCB levels are high enough in some populations to interfere with the reproduction of this aquatic species. Since the diet of the polecats consists to a large amount of aquatic prey (amphibians) it appears reasonable to assume that PCBs ingested with the prey are a factor in the decline of polecats. To test this assumption PCB residues in amphibians and in adipose tissue and liver of polecats from Southwest Germany were quantified and the results were compared with literature data on the reproductive toxicity of PCBs in feral mink. According to the current data total PCB levels in polecats (adipose tissue, mean 1244 ng/g lipids; liver, mean 1677 ng/g lipids) and their prey (frogs, mean 9279 ng/kg fresh weight; toads, 4948 ng/kg fresh weight) are comparatively low. Using the toxic equivalent approach, it was calculated that polecats could feed exclusively on amphibians without consuming a harmful amount of PCBs. Therefore, PCBs cannot be an agent currently affecting polecat populations in Central Europe. Other environmental factors like habitat destruction or road accidents are more likely to have a negative impact on polecat populations.
