234Th and 7Be as tracers for transport and sources of particle-associated contaminants in the Hudson River Estuary

Beryllium-7 in vegetation, soil, sediment and runoff on the northern Loess Plateau

Beryllium-7 (⁷Be), as a potentially powerful tracer, was widely used to document soil redistribution and identify sediment sources in recent decades, but the quantity and distribution of ⁷Be in vegetation, soil, sediment and runoff on the Loess Plateau have not been fully described. In this study, we measured ⁷Be in vegetation, soil, sediment and runoff on the northern Loess Plateau of China and analyzed its variations during the rainy season to assess the potential of the ⁷Be method for documenting soil redistribution and identifying sediment sources in a wide range of environments. The results indicated that vegetation, soil, and sediment samples showed higher levels and larger variations of ⁷Be activities during the rainy season. The drying plants showed ⁷Be mass activity that was more than three times higher than that of living and semi-decomposed plants. ⁷Be mass activity in plants and sediment was much higher than in the soil. ⁷Be activity in runoff water with a few submicron suspended particles varied slightly and was far lower than in plant, soil and sediment samples. The cumulative precipitation generally determined ⁷Be inventory held by plants and soil. An inverse relationship was found between the ⁷Be mass activity in sediment and the sediment amount. Globally, approximate 30% of the total ⁷Be was held by plants in both the herbaceous and subshrub plots. Approximate 10% of the total ⁷Be was lost with sediment from the bare plot. A very small proportion of ⁷Be (1.18%-3.20%) was lost with runoff, and the vast majority of ⁷Be was retained in the slope soil at the end of rainy season. Vegetation cover and soil erosion significantly affected the spatial distribution and variations of the ⁷Be inventory in soil, providing a necessary condition for the development of a ⁷Be method to document soil erosion on slopes with vegetation.

The particulate 7Be/210Pbxs and 234Th/210Pbxs activity ratios as tracers for tidal-to-seasonal particle dynamics in the Gironde estuary (France): implications for the budget of particle-associated contaminants

The short-lived natural radionuclides (7)Be (T(1/2)=53 days), (234)Th(xs) (T(1/2)=24.1 days) and (210)Pb(xs) (T(1/2)=22.3 years), i.e. (234)Th and (210)Pb in excesses of that supported within particles by the decay of their parent isotopes, were analysed in suspended particulate matter (SPM) to study the particle dynamics in the Gironde fluvial estuarine system (France), strongly impacted by heavy metal pollution. From surveys of this land-ocean interface in 2006 and 2007, we established a times series of these radioisotopes and of their activity ratios ((7)Be/(210)Pb(xs) and (234)Th/(210)Pb(xs) ARs) in particles sampled under different hydrological conditions. The particulate (7)Be/(210)Pb(xs) AR varies along the fluvial estuarine system mainly due to variations in (7)Be activities, controlled by riverine, oceanic and atmospheric inputs and by resuspension of old (7)Be-deficient sediments. These processes vary with river discharge, tidal cycle and season. Therefore, seasonal particle transport processes can be described using variations of the SPM (7)Be/(210)Pb(xs) ARs. During high river discharge, the SPM (7)Be/(210)Pb(x) ARs decrease from river to the ocean. The turbidity maximum zone (TMZ) is dispersed and the particles, and the associated contaminants, are rapidly transported from river to coastal waters, without significant retention within the TMZ. During low river discharge, the TMZ intrudes into the fluvial estuary, and the lowest (7)Be/(210)Pb(x) ARs are observed there due to resuspension of (7)Be-deficient sediments. Away from the TMZ, from the middle to lower estuary, SPM (7)Be/(210)Pb(x) ARs increase, indicating that the particles have been recently tagged with (7)Be. We explain this trend as being caused by marine input of dissolved radionuclides, as traced by SPM (234)Th/(210)Pb(xs) ARs, followed by scavenging in the estuary. This result indicates that particle transport models based on (7)Be and trace-metal budgets must consider oceanic dissolved inputs as an additional source of (7)Be and, possibly, of contaminants to estuaries.

Beryllium-7 atmospheric deposition and sediment inventories in the Neponset River estuary, Massachusetts, USA

Measured monthly atmospheric depositional fluxes of cosmogenically produced (7)Be ranged from 1 to 67 mBq/cm(2) in Boston, Massachusetts between September 2000 and August 2007. These fluxes exhibited seasonality and supported a decay-corrected (7)Be atmospheric depositional running inventory that ranged from 36 to 144 mBq/cm(2). Annual (7)Be deposition exhibited an increasing trend that may reflect a general decrease in solar activity and a general increase in precipitation over the 7-year sampling period. To investigate short-term sediment dynamics and accumulation patterns in the Neponset River estuary, we collected six sediment cores in July 2006 and measured (7)Be sediment inventories ranging from 48 to 546 mBq/cm(2) Comparisons of these sediment inventories with the (7)Be running inventory from atmospheric deposition (101 mBq/cm(2)) at the time of core collection indicated a large degree of spatial heterogeneity in sediment accumulation patterns and its potential use as a tool for assessing the impacts of environmental restoration activities in estuarine environments.

Iodine-131: a potential short-lived, wastewater-specific particle tracer in an urbanized estuarine system

The short-lived, fission-produced radioisotope, 131I (t1/2 = 8.04 days), was detected in wastewater, surficial sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected from New York Harbor (NYH) between 2001 and 2002. lodine-131 is used as a radiopharmaceutical for medical imaging, diagnostics, and treatments for conditions of the thyroid. It is introduced into the municipal waste stream by medical facilities and patients and is subsequently released into the estuary via wastewater effluent. Measured 131I activities in surface sediments were correlated with those of 7Be (t1/2 = 53.2 days), a naturally occurring radioisotope that is widely used to quantify particle dynamics, sediment focusing, and short-term sediment deposition and accumulation in aquatic systems. Surficial sediment 131I activities were also compared with measured trace metal (Cu, Pb) and organic carbon (OC(sed)) concentrations which can be linked to wastewater inputs. These preliminary results from NYH introduce 131I as a potentially valuable source-specific, shortlived biogeochemical tracer (timescales < 1 month) for particles, sediments, and wastewater-sourced contaminants in urbanized aquatic systems.

Invariance of isotope ratios of lithogenic radionuclides: more evidence for their use as sediment source tracers

Activities of radionuclides in the 238U (230Th, 226Ra, 210Pb) and 232Th (232Th, 228Th, 228Ra) decay series were determined in sediments from an east Texas watershed and examined with isotope ratios and compared to particulate organic carbon (POC), % fines (<63 microm) and total concentrations of Al, Fe and Mn. The objective was to elucidate the presence or absence of relationships affecting the effectiveness of these radionuclides in modeling sediment transport. Strong positive correlations were observed between radionuclides and Mn (Th) and % fines (Ra and Th). Isotope ratios effectively reduce these influences, supporting the contention that isotope ratios offset extrinsic variability in terrestrial sediments. Strong associations of 210Pbxs (excess 210Pb) and 226Ra/230Th with POC agree with data from marine and terrestrial settings, indicating that the role of POC in isotope fractionation, transport and sequestration merits further investigation.

Transport and sources of metal contaminants over the course of tidal cycle in the turbidity maximum zone of the Hudson River estuary

Transport and source of metal contaminants (Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in the turbidity maximum zone of the Hudson River estuary were studied over the course of a tidal cycle in November 1994 and August 1995. This study showed that the metal/Fe ratios in suspended particles varied more widely than those in the local sediments, implying that sources of metal contaminants to the water column are not only from local sediment resuspension but also from lateral advection. Although the metal/Fe ratios oscillate with time at the anchor stations, a general increasing trend with salinity was found over the course of a tidal cycle, suggesting that the lower estuary could be a source of metal contaminants to the upper estuary regions. These results support that sediment resuspension and lateral advection are important factors responsible for transporting the lower estuary contaminants up river and redistributing metal contaminants in the estuary.

Dredged material decontamination demonstration for the port of New York/New Jersey

Management of contaminated dredged material is a significant challenge in the Port of New York and New Jersey as a result of more stringent regional ocean placement regulations with escalating costs for upland placement. One component of an overall management plan can be the application of a decontamination technology followed by creation of a product suitable for beneficial use. This concept is the focus of a project now being carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 2, the US Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, the US Department of Energy, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and regional university groups that have included Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rutgers University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Stevens Institute of Technology. The project has progressed through phased testing of commercial technologies at the bench scale (15 liters) (Marcor, Metcalf & Eddy, Gas Technology Institute, Westinghouse Science & Technology, BioGenesis, International Technology, and BioSafe) and pilot-scale (1.5-500m(3)) (BioGenesis, Gas Technology Institute, and Westinghouse Science & Technology) levels. The technologies developed by Gas Technology Institute and BioGenesis are now going forward to commercial demonstration facilities that are intended to treat from 23000 to 60000m(3) of dredged material during their first operational period in 2001-2002. Beneficial use products are soils and cement. Treatment costs for the final commercial facilities are estimated at US$ 39 per m(3). Selection of the technologies was made based on the effectiveness of the treatment process, evaluation of the possible beneficial use of the treated materials, and other factors. Major elements of the project are summarized here.
