The Wilmer Information System. A classification and retrieval system for information on diagnosis and therapy in ophthalmology

The Wilmer Information System is a computerized medical information system used for the storage and retrieval of data pertaining to patient demographics, diagnosis, and therapy. The heart of the system is an expandable, hierarchical code based on International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision (ICD-9) diagnosis codes and Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology procedure codes. Customized coding sheets containing highly specific diagnosis and procedure codes have been designed for each subspecialty area in ophthalmology. Interactive database management software facilitates data entry and retrieval. The system can be used to search for patients who meet very specific criteria, or to produce cumulative visit reports and summary statistics.

A system for a computer-assisted glaucoma care unit

A computerized system for a glaucoma care unit is described. The aim is to examine and record every patient classified as a case of glaucoma in a way which permits subsequent use of the data in studies of the natural history of glaucoma. A main topic concerns the choice of those examinations, treatments etcetera which have to be included in the records to satisfy clinical and scientific requirements. The system is distensible by allowing the introduction of new parameters to be introduced. Graphic presentation of IOP and visual field development over long periods improve the surveyability to a large measure. So far about 200 patients from the glaucoma care unit have been included in the system.

Information from data. Computer assisted techniques

This paper discusses developments in computer systems which can facilitate medical research and medical care. System limitations and the importance of careful design are covered. Considerations in the selection of data for entry and in the type of data entered are also described. Included is a step-by-step analysis of the conversion of data into useful information.

Microcomputer applications in retinal research

A low cost microcomputer was used to: (1) word process and edit this manuscript, (2) create a patient file storage and retrieval system, (3) transcribe and store information from video display such as wide-angle fundus photographs and fluorescein angiograms, (4) plot data points in graphic display mode, (5) solve complex equations used to calculate intraocular tumor volumes, (6) search medical literature data bases, and (7) directly interface with sophisticated laboratory equipment performing complicated tasks such as multicomponent analysis and enzyme kinetics.
