Abstract
Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer, which is largely due to its propensity to metastasize. Therefore, with the aim to inhibit the growth and the metastatic dissemination of melanoma cells and to provide a novel treatment option, we studied the effects of the melanoma treatment with two organotin(IV) complexes of the meso-tetra(4-sulfonato-phenyl)porphine, namely (Bu2Sn)2TPPS and (Bu3Sn)4TPPS. In particular, we showed that nanomolar concentrations of (Bu2Sn)2TPPS and (Bu3Sn)4TPPS are sufficient to inhibit melanoma cell growth, to increase the expression of the full-length poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP-1), to induce the cell cycle arrest respectively at G2/M and G0/G1 through the inhibition of the Cyclin D1 expression and to inhibit cell colony formation. Nanomolar concentrations of (Bu2Sn)2TPPS and (Bu3Sn)4TPPS are also sufficient to inhibit the melanoma cell migration and the expression of some adhesion receptors. Moreover, we report that (Bu2Sn)2TPPS and (Bu3Sn)4TPPS act downstream of BRAF, mainly bypassing its functions, but targeting the STAT3 signalling protein. Finally, these results suggest that (Bu2Sn)2TPPS and (Bu3Sn)4TPPS may be effective therapeutic strategies for their role in the inhibition of melanoma growth and migration.

Abstract
Some molecular complexes of diethyltin(IV) dichloride and methyltin(IV) trichloride with para-substituted meso-tetraphenylporphyrins of the general formula [(Et2SnCl2)2H2T(4-X)PP] and [(MeSnCl3)2H2T(4-X)PP]; {X= OCH3, CH3, H, and Cl} have been synthesised and characterised by means of 1H NMR, UV-Vis, and elemental microanalysis methods.

Abstract
Various human activities lead to the pollution of ground, drinking, and wastewater with toxic metals. It is well known that metal ions preferentially bind to DNA phosphate backbones or DNA nucleobases, or both. Foreman et al. (Environ Toxicol Chem 30(8):1810-1818, 2011) reported the use of a DNA-dye based assay suitable for use as a toxicity test for potable environmental water. They compared the results of this test with the responses of live-organism bioassays. The DNA-based demonstrated that the loss of SYBR Green I fluorescence dye bound to calf thymus DNA was proportional to the toxicity of the water sample. However, this report raised questions about the mechanism that formed the basis of this quasi-quantitatively test. In this review, we identify the unique and preferred DNA-binding sites of individual metals. We show how highly sensitive and selective DNA-based sensors can be designed that contain multiple binding sites for 21 heavy metal cations that bind to DNA and change its structure, consistent with the release of the DNA-bound dye.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of diorganotin(iv) monomeric derivatives of pyridine Schiff bases and pyridinic carboxylic acids are reported. All complexes were characterised by mass spectrometry, elemental analyses, IR spectra, and multinuclear NMR analyses. Among them, complexes 5a, 5d, 5e, 5g, and 6a were also confirmed by X-ray crystallography diffraction analyses, which led to establishing that the tin atom is seven-coordinated and has a distorted pentagonal–bipyramidal coordination environment in the solid state and also revealed that both ligands occupy the equatorial positions and the organic substituents the axial positions. The antioxidant activity of the synthetic derivatives towards 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) as well as the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay were determined, and were compared with standard antioxidants, showing a dose-dependent activity in both cases. A prominent response was obtained depending on the substituent. The anti-inflammatory activity was also evaluated on a 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) model of induced acute inflammation. The results of the biological tests are discussed in terms of structural characteristics.

Abstract
New chiral reduced Schiff base ligands (R)/(S)-2-(2-hydroxy-1-phenylethylaminomethyl)phenol (L), (R)/(S)-2-(benzylamino)-2-phenylethanol (L') and their Cu(II)/organotin(IV) complexes (1-4) were synthesized and thoroughly characterized. Preliminary in vitro DNA binding studies of (R)- and (S)-enantiomeric pairs of ligands L, L' and complexes 1-4 were carried out employing UV-vis, fluorescence and circular dichroic techniques to evaluate their enantioselective DNA binding potential, thereby to act as antitumor chemotherapeutic drug entities. The observations demonstrated that S-enantiomer of Cu(II) complex, 1 binds more avidly to DNA in comparison to its R-enantiomeric form and organotin(IV) complex 2. This was further established by Kb and Ksv values of ligands L and L' and (S)-/(R)-1-4 complexes, which demonstrated multifold increase in case of S-enantiomer of copper complex 1 in comparison to its R-enantiomeric form. This clearly demonstrates the chiral preference of S-enantiomer over R-enantiomer and its potency to act as a chemotherapeutic agent. Cleavage studies of 1-4 with pBR322 plasmid DNA were carried out, noticeably, S-enantiomer of complex 1 exhibited effective DNA cleavage efficiency in absence of external agents. The cytotoxicity of ligands L and L' and (S)-/(R)-1-4 complexes was examined on a panel of 19 human tumor cell lines of different histological origins by SRB assay. In the both the cases, the S-enantiomer of complex 1 and 3 revealed remarkably good cytotoxic activity (GI50 values <10) against T24 (Urinary Bladder), DU145 (Prostate), U373MG (Astrocytoma) and HCT15, SW620 (Colon) clearly underlining the influence of enantiomeric discrimination. Interestingly, ligands L, L' and rest of the complexes demonstrated moderate cytotoxic activity (GI50 values <40).

Abstract
Organotin(IV) complexes with o- or p-hydroxybenzoic acids (o-H(2)BZA or p-H(2)BZA) of formulae [R(2)Sn(HL)(2)] (where H(2)L = o-H(2)BZA and R = Me- (1), n-Bu- (2)); [R(3)Sn(HL)] (where H(2)L = o-H(2)BZA and R = n-Bu- (3), Ph- (4) or H(2)L = p-H(2)BZA and R = n-Bu- (5), Ph- (6)) were synthesized by reacting a methanolic solution of di- and triorganotin(IV) compounds with an aqueous solution of the ligand (o-H(2)BZA or p-H(2)BZA) containing equimolar amounts of potassium hydroxide. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, Far-IR, TGA-DTA, FT-Raman, Mössbauer spectroscopy, (1)H, (119)Sn-NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, and Mass spectroscopy. The X-ray crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2 have also been determined. Finally, the influence of these complexes 1-6 upon the catalytic peroxidation of linoleic acid to hydroperoxylinoleic acid by the enzyme lipoxygenase (LOX) was kinetically studied and the results showed that triorganotin(IV) complex 6 has the lowest IC(50) value. Also complexes 1-6 were studied for their in vitro cytotoxicity against sarcoma cancer cells (mesenchymal tissue) from the Wistar rat, and the results showed that the complexes have high activity against these cell lines with triphenyltin((IV) complex 4 to be the most active one.

Abstract
A series of mono-, di- and triorganotin compounds with general formulae [RSnL(2)Cl], R = Bu (compound 3), [R(2)SnL(2)], where R = Me, Et, Bu, Oct (compounds 1, 2, 4 and 6) and [R(3)SnL], where R = Bu, Cy and Ph (compounds 5, 7 and 8) and where L = 3,4-methylenedioxy-6-nitrophenylpropenoic acid have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, multinuclear ((1)H-, (13)C- and (119)Sn-) NMR and mass spectrometry. The ligand and its respective organotin complexes were screened for cytotoxicity using the brine shrimp lethality assay and for antitumor activity using the crown gall tumor inhibition (potato disc) assay. The bioassay results support the conclusion that the biological activities of these synthetic compounds are in the following order: [RSnL(2)Cl] < [R(2)SnL(2)] < [R(3)SnL].

Abstract
In recent years, numerous organotin(IV) derivatives have exhibited remarkable cytotoxicity against several types of cancer. However, the properties of the cyanoxime-containing organotin(IV) complexes are unknown. Previously, it has been shown that cyanoximes displayed an interesting spectrum of biological activity ranging from growth-regulation to antimicrobial and pesticide detoxification actions. The work presented here attempts to combine the useful properties of both groups of compounds and investigate the likely antiproliferating activity of the new substances. A series of 19 organotin(IV) complexes, with nine different cyanoxime ligands, were anaerobically prepared by means of the heterogeneous metathesis reaction between the respective organotin(IV) halides (Cl, Br) and ML (M=Ag, Tl; L=cyanoximate anion), using an ultrasound in the CH3CN at room temperature. The compounds were characterized using spectroscopic methods (UV-visible, IR, 1H,13C NMR, 119Sn Mössbauer) and X-ray analysis. The crystal structures of the complexes revealed the formation of two types of tin(IV) cyanoximates: mononuclear five-coordinated compounds of R4-xSnLx composition (R=Me, Et, n-Bu, Ph; x=1, 2; L=cyanoximate anion), and the tetranuclear R8Sn4(OH)2O2L2 species (R=n-Bu, Ph). The latter complex contains a planar [Sn4(OH)2O2]2- core, consisting of three adjacent rhombs with bridging oxo and hydroxo groups. The tin(IV) atoms are five-coordinated and have distorted trigonal-pyramidal surrounding. This is the first instance when the organic anions were found to act as monodentate O-bound planar oxime ligands. All of the compounds were studied in vitro for antiproliferating activity, using human cervical cancer HeLa and WiDR colon cancer cell lines; cisplatin was used as a positive control substance. The two dibutyltin(IV) cyanoximates showed cytotoxicity similar and greater to that of cisplatin.

Abstract
The synthesis of pentacoordinated Tin(IV) compounds derived from aminoalcohols is described. The compounds were characterized by IR, 1H-, 13C-, and 119Sn-NMR, the mass spectrometry exhibits molecular ions corresponding to monomeric species. All compounds were evaluated for in vitro cytotoxic activities against five human tumor cell lines, U251 (human glioblastoma), PC-3 (human prostatic adenocarcinoma), K-562 (human chronic myelogenous leukemia), HCT-15 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma), MCF-7 (human mammary adenocarcinoma). The cytotoxic evaluation revealed that all compounds possess higher cytotoxic potency than that of the cisplatin, which was used as reference. Additionally, MT2 cells (human T-lymphocytes) were also evaluated.
