An Autonomous Alarm System for Personal Safety Assurance of Intimate Partner Violence Survivors Based on Passive Continuous Monitoring through Biosensors

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) dramatically compromises the free and complete development of many women around the world, therefore leading to social asymmetry regarding the right to personal safety. In many cases, a woman who has reported her partner to police for gender-based violence needs to ensure her protection (either before the trial of the aggressor or after their freedom). Thus, it would be ideal if autonomous alarm systems could be developed in order to call the police if necessary. Up to now, many proposals have been presented in this regard, including solutions based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) but, unfortunately, these approaches usually rely on the active participation of the victims (survivors), who have to turn the system on by themselves if needed. Therefore, in order to overcome such limitations, in this work, a passive continuous monitoring system is proposed which uses biosensors attached to the survivor as well as machine learning techniques to infer if an abnormal situation related to gender-based violence is taking place, activating in this case an alarm. The monitoring structure of the system supervises a great deal of bio-signals according to the current status of technology of wearables and biomedical devices. The presented biosensors-based surveillance solution can also be manually disconnected for 30/60/90 min (on demand) in order to avoid false positives when a woman is, for example, practicing sports or carrying out other inoffensive activities that could incorrectly activate the alarm.

Cardiac vagal control as a marker of emotion regulation in healthy adults: A review

In the last two decades, a growing body of theory and research has targeted the role of cardiac vagal control (CVC) in emotional responding. This research has either focused on resting CVC (also denoted as cardiac vagal tone) or phasic changes in CVC (also denoted as vagal reactivity) in response to affective stimuli. The present paper is aimed at reporting a review of the papers published between 1996 and 2016, and focused on the results of 135 papers examining cardiac vagal control as a physiological marker of emotion regulation in healthy adults. The review shows that studies have employed a wide array of methodologies and measures, often leading to conflicting results. High resting CVC has been associated with better down-regulation of negative affect, use of adaptive regulatory strategies, and more flexible emotional responding. Concerning phasic changes, research has consistently found decreased CVC in response to stress, while CVC increases have been shown to reflect either self-regulatory efforts or recovery from stress. Despite conflicting results, we conclude that existing literature supports the use of CVC as a noninvasive, objective marker of emotion regulation.

Emotional reactivity of the airways in asthma: consistency across emotion-induction techniques and emotional qualities

Considerable individual differences exist in asthma patients' airway responses to emotional stimuli, but little is known about the generalization of such responses across situations or states of airways constriction. Fifty-four asthma patients and 25 healthy controls viewed in two separate sessions, films and blocks of pictures from each of three emotional qualities, pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. At the beginning of each session, patients received a placebo or anti-cholinergic bronchodilator (ipratropium bromide), respectively, in a randomized double-blind design. Respiratory resistance, reactance and impedance were recorded throughout stimulus presentations with impulse oscillometry. Resistance increases showed a moderate degree of generalization across unpleasant films and pictures, unpleasant and pleasant pictures, as well as cholinergic blockade and placebo. Thus, the intensity of airway responses to unpleasant emotional stimuli is a moderately stable characteristic of asthma patients. In addition to the central airway, peripheral and extrathoracic airways may also contribute the consistency of such responses.

Studying noninvasive indices of vagal control: the need for respiratory control and the problem of target specificity

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a popular index of cardiac vagal control; however, research has rarely adequately addressed respiratory influences on RSA. In addition, simplistic views of the parasympathetic system have resulted in an overinterpretation of RSA as a general indicator of vagal control. Research using a respiration-corrected time-domain index of RSA has yielded plausible findings that substantially deviate from uncorrected RSA. Paced breathing, which is used for baseline calibration of RSA in this correction procedure, allows for a representative sampling of respiratory influences on RSA and has minimal impact on autonomic regulation. Past research has largely focused on cardiac vagal activity and ignored the extent of target specificity in the parasympathetic system. More research is needed on new noninvasive indices of vagal control at other organ sites. Studies also need to address muscarinic receptor sensitivity before noninvasive vagal indices can be interpreted as markers of central vagal outflow.

Watching emotional movies: affective reactions and gender differences

Previous studies have found that unpleasant film clips depicting mutilated bodies or injuries evoke a sustained heart rate deceleration which has been interpreted as reflecting a stimulus-specific aversive response or as increased orienting and attentional processing that varies with stimulus significance. Few studies, however, have examined cardiac changes during the viewing of high arousal pleasant films. To clarify this issue, the present study assessed evaluative, facial and autonomic reactions in both men and women during the viewing of highly arousing pleasant, as well as unpleasant, films. Results indicated a similar skin conductance increase and heart rate deceleration which were greater than those observed during the viewing of a neutral film. Compared to men, women rated both films as less pleasant and rated the unpleasant film as more arousing. The present findings suggest that sustained exposure to pleasant and unpleasant stimuli elicit similar cardiac orienting when stimuli are equated for subjective report of emotional arousal.

Affective modulation of swallowing rates: unpleasantness or arousal?

OBJECTIVE

It has been observed that spontaneous swallowing rates are modulated by the affective state. Affect-induced swallowing may be an important biobehavioral factor in gastrointestinal disorders. However, previous studies failed to distinguish between pleasantness and arousal effects and did not analyze gender effects.

METHOD

We analyzed swallowing rates in 42 participants (22 women) who viewed 3 blocks of 12 affective pictures preselected for inducing positive, negative, and neutral affect. Swallowing rate was measured by brief and rapid resistance increases in forced oscillation measurements indicating closure of the glottis. In addition, participants rated pleasantness and arousal for each individual picture.

RESULTS

Cumulative swallowing rates were lower during positive and neutral than negative picture blocks. This effect was only observed in women. Ratings confirmed earlier findings with picture material.

CONCLUSION

Both pleasantness and arousal interact to modulate swallowing rates. The role of gender in moderating affect-induced swallowing requires further research.

Airways, respiration, and respiratory sinus arrhythmia during picture viewing

Emotional stimuli can cause airway constriction; however, it is uncertain whether a dimensional or categorical model of emotion can better describe airway changes. Also, little is known about the affective modulation of respiration and vagal activity, which can influence airway tone. We studied changes in oscillatory resistance (Ros), respiration, and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in asthmatics and controls during viewing of affective pictures eliciting anxiety, depression, disgust, happiness, contentment, erotic tension, or neutral affect. Ros, respiration, cardiac activity, and self-report were measured during picture presentations. Ros increased monotonically with picture unpleasantness mainly due to disgust pictures. RSA and respiratory timing parameters were particularly sensitive to erotic pictures. Differences between asthmatics and controls were minimal, suggesting that airway responses to unpleasant pictures are not specific to asthma.

Probing the psychophysiology of the airways: physical activity, experienced emotion, and facially expressed emotion

This article reviews research on airway reactivity in health and asthma within a psychophysiological context, including the effects of physical activity, emotion induction, and manipulation of facial expression of emotion. Skeletal muscle activation leads to airway dilation, with vagal withdrawal being the most likely mechanism. Emotional arousal, in particular negative affect, leads to airway constriction, with evidence for a vagal pathway in depressive states and ventilatory contributions in positive affect. Laboratory-induced airway responses covary with reports of emotion-induced asthma and with lung function decline during negative mood in the field. Like physical activity, facial expression of emotion leads to airway dilation. However, these effects are small and less consistent in posed emotional expressions. The mechanisms of emotion-induced airway responses and potential benefits of emotional expression in asthma deserve further study.
