Stability of inter-joint coordination during circle drawing: effects of shoulder-joint articular properties

Control of interjoint coordination in the performance of manual circular movements can explain lateral specialization

Between-arm performance asymmetry can be seen in different arm movements requiring specific interjoint coordination to generate the desired hand trajectory. In the current investigation, we assessed between-arm asymmetry of shoulder-elbow coordination and its stability in the performance of circular movements. Participants were 16 healthy right-handed university students. The task consisted of performing cyclic circular movements with either the dominant right arm or the nondominant left arm at movement frequencies ranging from 40% of maximum to maximum frequency in steps of 15%. Kinematic analysis of shoulder and elbow motions was performed through an optoelectronic system in the three-dimensional space. Results showed that as movement frequency increased circularity of left arm movements diminished, taking an elliptical shape, becoming significantly different from the right arm at higher movement frequencies. Shoulder-elbow coordination was found to be asymmetric between the two arms across movement frequencies, with lower shoulder-elbow angle coefficients and higher relative phase for the left compared to the right arm. Results also revealed greater variability of left arm movements in all variables assessed, an outcome observed from low to high movement frequencies. From these findings, we propose that specialization of the left cerebral hemisphere for motor control resides in its higher capacity to generate appropriate and stable interjoint coordination leading to the planned hand trajectory.

Increased Speed Elicited More Automatized but Less Predictable Control in Cyclical Arm and Leg Movements

The present study explores variations in the degree of automaticity and predictability of cyclical arm and leg movements. Twenty healthy adults were asked to walk on a treadmill at a lower-than-preferred speed, their preferred speed, and at a higher-than-preferred speed. In a separate, repetitive punching task, the three walking frequencies were used to cue the target pace of the cyclical arm movements. Movements of the arms, legs, and trunk were digitized with inertial sensors. Whereas absolute slope values (|β|) of the linear fit to the power spectrum of the digitized movements (p < .001, η2 = .676) were systematically smaller in treadmill walking than in repetitive punching, sample entropy measures (p < .001, η2 = .570) were larger reflecting the former task being more automated but also less predictable than the latter task. In both tasks, increased speeds enhanced automatized control (p < .001, η2 = .475) but reduced movement predictability (p = .008, η2 = .225). The latter findings are potentially relevant when evaluating effects of task demand changes in clinical contexts.

Differential effects of mental load on proximal and distal arm muscle activity

Work-related upper extremity disorders (WRUEDs) that result from keyboarding tasks are prevalent and costly. Although the precise mechanisms causing the disorder are not yet fully understood, several risk factors have been proposed. These include the repetitive nature of the motor task and the associated sustained static working postures, but also more psychological factors such as mental load. Epidemiological surveys have shown that WRUEDs are more prone to develop in the postural muscles of the neck/shoulder area than in the executive muscles controlling the hand. The present study investigated whether the activation patterns of these two muscle types are differentially affected by an additional mental load during the performance of a repetitive tapping task. Participants tapped various keying patterns with their dominant index finger at two prescribed tempi. Mental load was manipulated by means of an auditory short-term memory task. We recorded the EMG activity of two neck/shoulder muscles (trapezius and deltoid), two upper arm muscles (biceps and triceps), and four forearm muscles (flexor digitorum superficialis, extensor digitorum, extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi ulnaris) and analyzed the kinematics and impact forces of the index finger. The results confirmed that the upper limb has two functions. Specifically, activity of the executive distal musculature was increased during tapping at the higher pace, while the activity of the postural upper limb musculature was elevated due to the memory task. We argue that continuously increased muscular activity can lead to fatigue and thus eventually cause musculoskeletal complaints. The results are discussed with respect to biomechanical adaptation strategies that deal with the consequences of increased noise in the neuromotor system due to enhanced mental processing.
