The Pan American and Iberian Federation of Critical Medicine and Intensive Therapy develops its Strategic Plan

The Pan-American and Iberian Federation of Critical Medicine and Intensive Therapy, A.C. (FEPIMCTI), has prepared its Strategic Plan for the next 5 years. In this Plan, it defines its course towards the future, establishes its long-term objectives and works to achieve success. Its strategic objectives are framed in consolidating the legal, fiscal and administrative structure, the updating of its statutes, the implementation of a process management system encompassed in a quality culture, the implementation of committees of experts, achieving academic excellence by developing training programs and giving visibility to the Federation. Their main values refer to equity, professionalism, respect and social solidarity. The implementation of the Strategic Plan in a collaborative manner must serve as a driving force for change to position FEPIMCTI as a relevant Scientific Society in the Critical Medicine of its member countries.

Strategic Plan for the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (AEDV): FuturAEDV 2013-2017

BACKGROUND

The Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV) has decided that a Strategic Plan is needed to help the association adapt to new circumstances and anticipate future developments.

OBJECTIVES

1) To position the AEDV as a medical association that can exert an influence in everything related to dermatology. 2) To contribute to the development of the specialty, strengthening the prestige and reputation of dermatology and dermatologists. 3) To establish a model for operating and strategic thinking that can be handed on to successive Boards of Directors and will enable the Academy to identify future challenges.

METHODS

The approach used to develop the Strategic Plan was as follows: analysis of trends in the health care system; assessment of the current situation of AEDV and of dermatology in general through an internal analysis based on surveys and interviews with academics; analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; preparation of a mission statement; and identification, development, and implementation of a strategy map prioritizing strategic lines of action.

RESULTS

The strategy map set out 16 general goals grouped into 4 main topics (achieving the vision, internal and external customers, internal processes, and innovation) and detailed in an action plan with 19 initiatives, each with specific actions. The plan will be monitored by the Strategic Plan Monitoring Committee, which is made up of the members of the Standing Committee and the chairs of the 9 Technical Committees responsible for implementing the initiatives.

COMMENT

The Functional Plan should guide the management of AEDV until 2017, and its implementation will enable the association to contribute to the development and prestige of the specialty and position itself as a reference in terms of its functional model.

[Physicians' attitudes and perceptions regarding the critical care and critical care specialty]

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the attitudes and perceptions of the doctors of a hospital regarding critical care and the speciality of Intensive Medicine.

DESIGN

Prospective, descriptive study during 3 months.

SETTING

Insular University Hospital in Gran CanaRia, Canary Islands, Spain.

PATIENTS

Medical specialists and residents.

INTERVENTION

Anonymous survey.

MAIN VARIABLES

Demographic data of the interviewed doctors were collected and they were asked about their labour or personal previous relation with the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the attitudes of the critical care doctors' of their hospital and their perceptions regarding the critical care speciality.

RESULTS

We interviewed 116 doctors, 75 staff and 41 residents. Less of the third part believed that the ICU was a ward for potentially critical patients. A high percentage of the doctors whom had been refused some admission were not to agree with the arguments that they received. More than 40% of the interviewed ones affirmed had not requested bed in the ICU for any patient who had benefited from it, especially because they were thinking that the admission would be refused. Some doctors think that the professio - nals employed at the ICU are doctors of different specialities. The speciality of Intensive Medicine is perceived by a high level of stress among the professionals.

CONCLUSIONS

We detect the ignorance of other professionals about the function of a Service of Intensive Medicine and the model of ICU of our country. Also we find high rates of dissatisfaction among the professionals who was refused some admission in the unit, because of we believe that clinical guides about the criteria of admission must be elaborated and to announce them among the doctors of the hospital. The professionals perceive that we suffer a high level of stress.

[Degree of public awareness regarding intensive care units (ICUs) and intensive care physicians in Castilla y León]

AIM

To determine degree of public awareness regarding the activities and health care professionals that comprise intensive care units (ICUs) in the autonomous community of Castilla y León.

DESIGN

Questionaire in the form of a true-false test dealing with a) description of an ICU; b) description of ICU patients, and c) degrees and qualifications held by ICU physicians.

LOCATION

Waiting rooms of outpatient clinics and ICUs of 9 hospitals in Castilla y León.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

During the period from 1 October 2003 to 29 February 2004, there were surveyed a group of those persons accompanying outpatients arriving for appointments (OP, n = 2,293), and a group comprised of relatives of ICU patients (ICU, n = 727) upon discharge from the ICU.

RESULTS

The average age of those subjects surveyed was 45.6 years old. 62.1% were women and 52.8% had received education through secondary level or higher. Of the 1,354 analyzed OP questionnaires, 27.7%, 25.5% and 48.4% responded correctly to questions A, B and C, respectively. Of the 284 analyzed ICU questionnaires, 38.6%, 41.0%, and 63.5% responded correctly to questions A, B and C, respectively. Differences between results from the two surveyed groups were statistically significant, and the best results from the ICU group were found among those subjects whose family members had remained in ICU for 2 days or more.

CONCLUSIONS

In the described scope, of the citizens of Castilla y León, 27.7% know as it is a ICU, 25.5% know what type of patients usually is entered there, and 48.4% recognize their doctors like ICU specialists specifically. These knowledge improve significantly after having some relative entered in ICU for more than 2 days.
