[Multicentric liposarcoma. Apropos of a case]

Metachronous multifocal myxoid liposarcoma involving the gastrointestinal tract. Management and literature review

Multifocal soft tissue sarcoma is a rare clinical entity occurring in 1% of patients with extremity soft tissue sarcoma and in 4.5% of patients with liposarcoma. Multifocal disease may arise either synchronously or metachronously and has been associated with poor prognosis. Herein, we have described a rare case of metachronous multifocal myxoid liposarcoma involving the gastrointestinal tract that developed 14 months after the resection of a myxoid buttock liposarcoma. Diagnostic evaluation and management of the patient are discussed along with a review of the relevant literature. We conclude that multifocal myxoid liposarcoma is a rare clinical entity that usually represents metastatic disease with poor prognosis. A thorough imaging and careful physical examination are essential in the preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up of patients with myxoid extremity liposarcomas, as these tumors are known to have a tendency to spread toward extrapulmonary sites, frequently without pulmonary metastases.

Multicentric myxoid liposarcoma: report of two cases

Background

Multicentric myxoid liposarcoma is a rather infrequent tumour that tends to behave aggressively.

Case presentation

We herein report two further cases of this tumour that have been managed in our Hospital. Both were young men with multiple sites of involvement at the moment of diagnosis and both have shown a bad prognosis with frequent recurrences after treatment and rapid death in one case.

Conclusion

We comment on the diagnosis of this entity and on the therapeutic options available for these patients.

[Giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma. One case report]

INTRODUCTION

Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma is a rare and primary malignancy developed from mesenchymal tissue. It's generally unique and shows an only one histologic component. We report a case of multicentric and synchronous liposarcoma (intraperitoneal and retroperitoneal) and with different histologic types.

EXEGESES

A 53-year old man presented with abdominal pain, increased abdominal girth and weight loss. Physical examination revealed two abdominal masses. Computed tomography scan showed a very large retroperitoneal mass displacing the left kidney, digestive loops and vessels. The patient underwent surgery. One enormous mass of the left renal lodge measuring 50 cm, a retroduodenal mass measuring 15 cm and a nodule of the coecum were removed. Histological examination of the mass of the left renal lodge revealed mixed type liposarcoma (dedifferentiated and myxoid). Histological examination of the retroduodenal mass and of the nodule of the coecum revealed well-differentiated liposarcoma.

CONCLUSION

Pathological, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of abdominal liposarcoma will be reviewed in this article.

[Giant retroperitoneal liposarcoma: report of a case]

Liposarcoma is a rare and primary malignancy developed from mesenchymal tissue. We report the case of a 32-year-old woman who had a complete exeresis of a 15 cm retroperitoneal myxoid liposarcoma. Three months later, a 9 cm local recurrence was excised and radiotherapy was performed. In 2000, a local recurrence and an intestinal localisation of the liposarcoma were observed. The retroperitoneal tumor could not be removed and she had an intestinal resection followed by chemotherapy. With the literature data, we review the pathological, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of this tumor.

Sonographic appearance of primary liver liposarcoma

Primary malignant mesenchymal tumors of the liver are extremely rare. We report a case of a primary liposarcoma in the right hepatic lobe of a 50-year-old man. Sonography showed a poorly defined, lobulated, infiltrating echogenic tumor with shadowing. Within the tumor were hyperechoic and hypoechoic foci thought to represent areas of hemorrhage and necrosis. Color Doppler sonography showed the mass to be avascular. A low-attenuation mass of fat density was confirmed on CT. The resected tumor was reasonably well circumscribed, with demonstrable infiltration of the liver parenchyma. Histologic analysis showed liposarcoma with high-grade sarcomatous features.
