Comparison between urban Toronto PM and selected materials: aerosol characterization using laser ablation/ionization mass spectrometry (LAMS)

The Progress in Electron Microscopy Studies of Particulate Matters to Be Used as a Standard Monitoring Method for Air Dust Pollution

The present article reviews studies on air solid particles carried out with the use of electron microscopy. Particle analysis combining scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) can be used to derive size-resolved information of the composition, mixing state, morphology, and complex refractive index of atmospheric aerosol particles. It seems that electron microscopy is more widely used in atmospheric particulate matter analysis, but the usage of this method is sometimes problematic. First of all, there is no standard methodology adapted for dust analysis, and it is difficult to compare the results coming from different laboratories. Nevertheless, it was shown that this method has potential to be used in the future as a standard monitoring procedure of air solid particles.

Receptor modeling of toronto PM2.5 characterized by aerosol laser ablation mass spectrometry

Urban Toronto fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was physically and chemically characterized by online aerosol laser ablation mass spectrometry (LAMS) between January 2002 and February 2003. The mass spectra from the analysis of individual aerosol particles were classified according to chemical composition by a neural network approach called adaptive resonance theory (ART-2a). Temporal trends of the hourly analysis rate of over 120 different particles types were constructed and subjected to positive matrix factorization (PMF). This receptor modeling technique enabled the identification of nine distinct emission sources responsible for these particle types: biogenic, mixed crustal, organic nitrate, construction dust, Toronto soil/road salt, secondary salt, wood burning, intercontinental dust, and an unknown source of aluminum fluoride dust. Episodic events occurred with the wood burning, intercontinental dust, and unknown dust sources. This is the first paper reporting the application of PMF to single-particle spectral data.

Application of single-particle laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from soot particles originating from an industrial combustion process

Combustion-related soot particles were sampled in situ from the stoker system of a 0.5 MW incineration pilot plant (feeding material was wood) at two different heights over the feed bed in the third air supply zone. The collected particles were re-aerosolized by a powder-dispersing unit and analyzed by a single-particle laser desorption/ionization (LDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometer (aerosol-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, ATOFMS). The ATOFMS instrument characterizes particles according to their aerodynamic size (laser velocimetry) and chemical composition (LDI mass spectrometry). Chemical species from the particles are laser desorbed/ionized by 266 nm Nd:YAG laser pulses. ATOFMS results on individual 'real world' particles in general give information on the bulk inorganic composition. Organic compounds, which are of much lower concentrations, commonly are not detectable. However, recent off-line laser microprobe mass spectrometric (LMMS) experiments on bulk soot aerosol samples have emphasized that organic compounds can be desorbed and ionized without fragmentation in LDI experiments from black carbonaceous matrices. This paper reports the successful transfer of the off-line results to on-line analysis of airborne soot particles by ATOFMS. The detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from soot particles is addressed in detail. The results are interpreted in the context of the recent LMMS results. Furthermore, their relevance with respect to possible applications in on-line monitoring of combustion processes is discussed.
