[Estimate of bibliometric indicators of the impact of +Archivos de Bronconeumología]

Estudio bibliométrico de la revista Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas (1984-2003) III. Análisis de los indicadores de repercusión

OBJECTIVE

To quantify the impact factor of the journal Actas Dermo-Sifiliográficas (AD) from 1986 to 1990 and from 1999 to 2003 and to identify the journal's citation pattern in those years.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Citations obtained by AD in the periods from 1985-1990 and 1998-2003 for articles published from 1984 to 1989 and from 1997 to 2002 were collected using Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI).

RESULTS

The number of times AD was cited doubled during the second period, increasing from 38 (period from 1985-1990) to 76 (period from 1998-2003). Considering the number of citations, AD's impact factor increased from 0.016 in 1986 to 0.040 in 2003. In both periods, citations corresponding to AD articles were included in a wide range of source journals, mainly dermatological publications abroad. The most referred journals in the second period were the Dutch publication Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (13 citations) and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (12 citations). Unlike the period from 1985 to 1990 when no Spanish journal cited AD, four Spanish publications mentioned AD in the second period: Revista clínica española (6 citations), Archivos de bronconeumología (4 citations), Medicina clínica (3 citations) and the journal Enfermedades infecciosas y microbiología clínica (1 citation). Citations mainly corresponded to articles published by Spanish authors (63.2 % in the 1985-1990 period and 81.6 % in the period from 1998 to 2003). Self-citation increased from 10.5 % (first period) to 31.6 % (second period).

CONCLUSION

The impact factor of AD is low and not comparable to other publications included in the Dermatology and Venereal Diseases field from SCI. Our results confirm the low citation rate of AD by source journals in this repertory. However, the increase of this rate in recent years seems to indicate a higher Spanish presence in SCI due to an increasing number of publications corresponding to Spanish authors in international journals and the inclusion of some Spanish journals in this database.

[Impact factor of the Spanish medical journals]

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

The 2001 edition of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) includes only 13 Spanish medical journals. The impact factor (IF) of the rest of Spanish medical journals is unknown. The aim of this study is to determine the IF of the main Spanish medical journals, taking also into account the references from journals not covered by the SCI.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

A set of 87 Spanish medical journals was selected from the national database IME and other international databases. All citable articles published in these journals in 2001 were analyzed, extracting their bibliographic references to articles published in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The indicators obtained for each journal were the number of cites, the IF and the immediacy index.

RESULTS

Among the 87 source journals, 74 were not included in the JCR. From them, 5,388 bibliographic references were examined, identifying the journals cited. Final indicators were obtained adding these results to the ones obtained by using the Science Citation Index. The most cited journal was Medicina Clinica (768 cites), and the highest IF were attained by Histology and Histopathology (IF = 1.866), International Journal of Developmental Biology (IF = 1.654) and Medicina Clinica (IF = 1.125).

CONCLUSIONS

This work has permitted to obtain the IF of 87 Spanish medical journals. Already detected in previous works, the leadership of the journal Medicina Clinica in Spanish medicine is confirmed. Spanish medical journals published in English have received a small number of cites from the ones published in Spanish. A low impact factor is not necessarily related to lack of quality, merit or relevance.

[Archivos de Bronconeumología: among the 3 Spanish medical journals with the highest national impact factors]

OBJECTIVE

Citation analysis elucidates patterns of information consumption within professional communities. The aim of this study was to analyze the citations of 87 Spanish medical journals by calculating their impact factors and immediacy indices for 2001, and to estimate the importance of Archivos de Bronconeumología within the framework of Spanish medicine.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Eighty-seven Spanish medical journals were included. All were listed in the Spanish Medical Index (Indice Medico Español) and in at least one of the following databases: MEDLINE, BIOSIS, EMBASE, or Science Citation Index. References to articles from 1999 through 2001 in citable articles from 2001 were analyzed. Using the method of the Institute for Scientific Information, we calculated the national impact factor and immediacy index for each journal.

RESULTS

The journals with the highest national impact factors were Revista Española de Quimioterapia (0.894), Medicina Clínica (0.89), and Archivos de Bronconeumología (0.732). The self-citation percentage of Archivos de Bronconeumología was 18.3% and the immediacy index was 0.033.

CONCLUSIONS

The impact factor obtained by Archivos de Bronconeumología confirms its importance in Spanish medicine and validates its inclusion as a source journal in Science Citation Index and Journal Citation Report.

Factor de impacto nacional e internacional de ANALES DE PEDIATRÍA

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this study was to present bibliometric indicators of the impact of Anales de Pediatría in 2001 and to compare this journal with other Spanish pediatrics journals.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

A total of 5,388 bibliographic references from 1999, 2000 and 2001 corresponding to citable articles published in 2001 in a sample of 87 selected Spanish medical journals were analyzed. The indicators obtained were the number of citations, the national and international impact factor (IF) and the immediacy index.

RESULTS

The national IF of Anales de Pediatría was 0.334 and the international IF was 0.372. The immediacy index was 0.111.

DISCUSSION

This study confirms the leadership of Anales de Pediatría, since this journal is the most frequently cited Spanish pediatrics journal and has the highest IF and immediacy index. The bibliometric indicators obtained are comparable with those observed in other journals included in Journal Citation Reports.

[Analysis of the impact of Archivos de Bronconeumología through the Science Citation Index]

OBJECTIVE

To describe the impact factor of Archivos de Bronconeumología from 1997 until 2000 and to identify the patterns of citation of the journal and topics having the greatest impact.

METHOD

SCISEARCH was used to locate citations of articles published by Archivos de Bronconeumología between 1995 and 1999. The following data were collected for each article: year of publication, authors, journal, country of publication, language, specialty or specialties, institution(s), residence of the first author and topic. The impact factor was calculated as the ratio of citations received in one year by articles published in Archivos de Bronconeumología during the two previous years and the total number of articles published by Archivos de Bronconeumología over the two years under study.

RESULTS

The impact factor of Archivos de Bronconeumología was 0.107 in 1997, 0.089 in 1998, 0.105 in 1999 and 0.119 in 2000. Citations were found in a wide range of source journals, with respiratory system publications having little weight. Citations were made mainly by Spanish authors (75%) and self-citation was restrained (21.1%). Topics related to tuberculosis and respiratory infections (23.6% of the citations received) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (12.5%) made the greatest impact.

CONCLUSION

The impact factor of Archivos de Bronconeumología is modest, although higher than those of some other publications included in Journal Citation Reports.

A bibliometric evaluation of European Union research of the respiratory system from 1987-1998

This study analyses the evolution of the bibliometric indicators of productivity and repercussion of European Union (EU) research into the respiratory system during the period from 1987-1998, describing the geographical distribution. Using MedLine, a selection was made of those articles by EU authors published between 1987-1998 in 38 respiratory system journals (classification from the Institute for Scientific Information). The journals, country of origin, number of articles and the relation to socioeconomic data, productivity index, visibility index, expected impact factor (EIF) and relative impact factor (RIF) were all analysed. The number of EU publications in respiratory system journals experienced an exponential increase, going from 606 articles (14.3% of world production) in 1987, to 2,325 (33.2%) in 1998. During this same period, the EIF increased from 1,258 to 2,111. The greatest gross productivities were those of the UK, France, Italy and Germany, although when corrected for number of inhabitants, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark headed the list. The countries with the greatest mean EIF were the Netherlands, the UK, Spain and Belgium. In conclusion, productivity and repercussions of European Union research of the respiratory system experienced an important increase during this period.

[Evolution of Spanish scientific production in international respiratory system journals from 1987 to 1998]

BACKGROUND

A relevant increase in the clinical relevance of respiratory system area has occurred in the last few years. The aims of this study were: to analyze the evolution of production and impact of Spanish scientific activity in the respiratory system area between 1987 to 1998; and to assess the participation of the different Spanish autonomic communities in this activity.

METHODS

Papers published in 38 international journals of respiratory system during this period of time were selected by the MedLine system, delimiting Spanish production. Geographical and institutional distribution of the production, specialist of authors, main publication journals and type of publication were recorded. Production and impact bibliometric indicators were estimated.

RESULTS

The number of Spanish documents from 1987 to 1998 multiplied by eight, reaching the 1.49% of the total published documents in 1998. However, the growth model of scientific production during this period was lineal. The increase in the scientific production was associated with a increase over time in the expected impact factor. In 1998, expected impact factor was 2. 206. Forty-two percent of the papers were signed by pneumologists. The highest contributor were hospitals. The most productive autonomous communities were Catalonia, Cantabria and Madrid. The communities with the highest expected impact factor were Balears and Catalonia.

CONCLUSIONS

A relevant increase has occurred in the scientific production and impact of Spanish biomedical activity in respiratory system area.
