Effects of dietary undegradable crude protein level on total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) digestibility, and milk yield and composition of dairy cows

A network meta-analysis of the impact of feed-grade and slow-release ureas on lactating dairy cattle

A network meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effects of feeding feed-grade urea (FGU) or slow-release urea (SRU) as a replacement for true protein supplements (control; CTR) in high-producing dairy cattle diets. Research papers were selected (n = 44) from experiments published between 1971 and 2021 based on the following criteria: dairy breed, detailed description of the isonitrogenous diets fed, provision of FGU or SRU (or both), high-yielding cows (>25 kg/cow per day), and results that included at least milk yield and composition, but data on nutrient intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation profile, and N utilization were also considered. Most studies compared only 2 treatments, and a network meta-analysis approach was adopted to compare the effects among CTR, FGU, and SRU. Data were analyzed using a generalized linear mixed model network meta-analysis. Forest plots of milk yield were used to visualize the estimated effect size of treatments. Cows included in the study produced 32.9 ± 5.7 L/d of milk, 3.46 ± 5.0% of fat, and 3.11 ± 0.2% of protein with an intake of 22.1 ± 3.45 kg of dry matter. Average diet composition was 1.65 ± 0.07 Mcal of net energy for lactation, 16.4 ± 1.45% CP, 30.8 ± 5.91% neutral detergent fiber, and 23.0 ± 4.62% starch. Average supply of FGU was 209 g/cow per day, whereas the average supply of SRU was 204 g/cow per day. With some exceptions, feeding FGU and SRU did not affect nutrient intake and digestibility, N utilization, and milk yield and composition. However, the FGU reduced the acetate proportion (61.6 vs. 59.7 mol/100 mol) and the SRU reduced the butyrate proportion (12.4 vs. 11.9 mol/100 mol) compared with CTR. Ruminal ammonia-N concentration increased from 8.47 to 11.5 and 9.3 mg/dL in CTR, FGU, and SRU, respectively. Urinary nitrogen excretion increased from 171 to 198 g/d in CTR versus the 2 urea treatments, respectively. The use of moderate doses of FGU in high-producing dairy cows may be justified based on its lower cost.

Effect of carbohydrate sources and levels of cotton seed meal in concentrate on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation and microbial protein synthesis in young dairy bulls

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of levels of cottonseed meal with various carbohydrate sources in concentrate on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation and microbial protein synthesis in dairy bulls. Four, 6 months old dairy bulls were randomly assigned to receive four dietary treatments according to a 2×2 factorial arrangement in a 4×4 Latin square design. Factor A was carbohydrate source; cassava chip (CC) and cassava chip+rice bran in the ratio of 3:1 (CR3:1), and factor B was cotton seed meal levels in the concentrate; 109 g CP/kg (LCM) and 328 g CP/kg (HCM) at similar overall CP levels (490 g CP/kg). Bulls received urea-lime treated rice straw ad libitum and were supplemented with 10 g of concentrate/kg BW. It was found that carbohydrate source and level of cotton seed meal did not have significant effects on ruminal pH, ammonia nitrogen concentration, microbial protein synthesis or feed intake. Animals which received CC showed significantly higher BUN concentration, ruminal propionic acid and butyric acid proportions, while dry matter, organic matter digestibility, populations of total viable bacteria and proteolytic bacteria were lower than those in the CR3:1 treatment. The concentration of total volatile fatty acids was higher in HCM than LCM treatments, while the concentration of butyric acid was higher in LCM than HCM treatments. The population of proteolytic bacteria with the LCM treatments was higher than the HCM treatments; however other bacteria groups were similar among the different levels of cotton seed meal. Bulls which received LCM had higher protein digestibility than those receiving HCM. Therefore, using high levels of cassava chip and cotton seed meal might positively impact on energy and nitrogen balance for the microbial population in the rumen of the young dairy bull.

Starch digestion site : influence of ruminal and abomasal starch infusion on starch digestion and utilization in dairy cows

The effect of site of starch digestion on glucose metabolism in dairy cows was studied. Four multiparous Israeli-Holstein cows in mid lactation were used in a 4 × 4 Latin-square design. Average body weight of cows was 580 ± 38 kg, and average milk yield was 28 ± 3 kg/day. The cows were fitted with ruminal cannula and flexible T-cannulae in abomasum and ileum. Treatments were as follows : CON (control) : water was infused to the rumen. SR (starch-rumen) : 1.5 kg/day of maize starch solution was infused into the rumen. SA (starch-abomasum) : 1.5 kg/day of maize starch solution was infused into the abomasum. SCA (starch-casein-abomasum) : 500 g/day sodium caseinate and 1.5 kg/day of maize starch solution was infused into the abomasum. Total intake of dry matter (DM), was similar in all treatments and averaged 19.9 kg/day. Total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) intake averaged in 6.8 kg/day. The average TNC digested in the rumen was 4.95 kg/day for CON and SR cows and 3.34 kg/day for the SA and the SCA cows. The average TNC digestion in the small intestine was 1.18 kg/day for CON and SR cows and 2.41 kg/day for the SA and SCA cows. TNC digestibility in the small intestine was highest for the SCA cows at 0.83 as compared with other treatments. Concentrations of plasma glucose and insulin were similar between treatments. No difference between treatments in total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration in ruminal fluids was observed. However, propionate proportion in total VFA was higher in the SR cows than in other treatments (P< 0.04). Milk yield and composition were not affected by treatments in the present study. It was concluded that the amount of dietary protein in the small intestine has a considerable effect on TNC digestibility. Under conditions of high milk production and high rumen-by-pass TNC flow, efficiency of TNC utilization might be greater since TNC is digested in the small intestine rather than in the rumen.
