Critical review of advanced oxidation processes in organic wastewater treatment

With the development of industrial society, organic wastewater produced by industrial manufacturing has caused many environmental problems. The vast majority of organic pollutants in water bodies are persistent in the environment, posing a threat to human and animal health. Therefore, efficient treatment methods for highly concentrated organic wastewater are urgently needed. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely noticed in the area of treating organic wastewater. Compared with other chemical methods, AOPs have the characteristics of high oxidation efficiency and no secondary pollution. In this paper, the mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of AOPs are comprehensively reviewed. Besides, the basic principles of combining different AOPs to enhance the treatment efficiency are described. Furthermore, the applications of AOPs in various wastewater treatments, such as oily wastewater, dyeing wastewater, pharmaceutical wastewater, and landfill leachate, are also presented. Finally, we conclude that the main direction in the future of AOPs are the modification of catalysts and the optimization of operating parameters, with the challenges focusing on industrial applications.

Hybrid Advanced Oxidation Processes Involving Ultrasound: An Overview

Sonochemical oxidation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment is considered to be a green process. This mode of degradation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment is considered to render reputable outcomes in terms of minimal chemical utilization and no need of extreme physical conditions. Indiscriminate discharge of toxic organic pollutants in an aqueous environment by anthropogenic activities has posed major health implications for both human and aquatic lives. Hence, numerous research endeavours are in progress to improve the efficiency of degradation and mineralization of organic contaminants. Being an extensively used advanced oxidation process, ultrasonic irradiation can be utilized for complete mineralization of persistent organic pollutants by coupling/integrating it with homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic processes. In this regard, scientists have reported on sonophotocatalysis as an effective strategy towards the degradation of many toxic environmental pollutants. The combined effect of sonolysis and photocatalysis has been proved to enhance the production of high reactive-free radicals in aqueous medium which aid in the complete mineralization of organic pollutants. In this manuscript, we provide an overview on the ultrasound-based hybrid technologies for the degradation of organic pollutants in an aqueous environment.

Ozone and ozone/vacuum-UV degradation of diethyl dithiocarbamate collector: kinetics, mineralization, byproducts and pathways

The diethyl dithiocarbamate (DDC) collector, a precursor of toxic N-nitrosamines, is detected in flotation wastewaters usually at the ppm level. In this study, the O₃ and O₃/Vacuum-UV (O₃/VUV) processes were compared to investigate the efficient removal of DDC with a low risk of N-nitrosamine formation. The results showed that 99.55% of DDC was removed at 20 min by O₃/VUV, and the degradation rate constant was 3.99 times higher than that using O₃-alone. The C, S and N mineralization extents of DDC using O₃/VUV reached 36.36%, 62.69% and 79.76% at 90 min, respectively. O₃/VUV achieved a much higher mineralization extent of DDC than O₃-alone. After 90 min of degradation, O₃/VUV achieved lower residual concentrations of CS₂ and H₂S, and released lower amounts of gaseous sulfur byproducts compared to O₃-alone. The solid phase extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE/GC–MS) analysis indicated that the main byproducts in O₃/VUV degradation of DDC were amide compounds without the detection of N-nitrosamines. The avoidance of N-nitrosamine formation might be attributed to exposure of UV irradiation and enhanced formation of ˙OH radicals in the O₃/VUV system. The degradation pathways of DDC were proposed. This work indicated that O₃/VUV was an efficient alternative treatment technique for the removal of DDC flotation collector with low risk of N-nitrosamine formation.

The diethyl dithiocarbamate collector, a precursor of toxic N-nitrosamines, can be effectively degraded by the O₃/VUV with satisfactory mineralization extents.

Sulfide removal in petroleum refinery wastewater by chemical precipitation

Sulfide removal by chemical precipitation from petroleum refinery wastewater was investigated. The wastewater samples were taken from the flocculation pond influent of TUPRAS Kirikkale Middle Anatolia Petroleum Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and physicochemical treatments using conventional coagulants which were partial precipitant [FeCl(3) . 6H(2)O and FeSO(4) . 7H(2)O] and coagulant-aids [Ca(OH)(2) and CaCO(3)] were applied to both raw and sulfide added wastewater. Sulfide and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of Fe(3+) ions alone for sulfide added wastewaters having different pH values varied between 62-95 and 45-75%, respectively. In addition, removal efficiencies of sulfide (96-99%) and COD (50-80%) were obtained by using Fe(2+) ions together with Ca(OH)(2) as precipitant-aid under the same conditions. In experiments performed with raw wastewater which had different pH values, COD removal efficiencies of Fe(3+) and Fe(2+) ions together with Ca(OH)(2), were 50-80 and 32-50%, respectively.

Ultrasound-Induced Aqueous Removal of Nitric Oxide from Flue Gases: Effects of Sulfur Dioxide, Chloride, and Chemical Oxidant

The effects of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)), sodium chloride (NaCl), and peroxymonosulfate or oxone (2KHSO(5).KHSO(4).K(2)SO(4) with active ingredient, HSO(5)(-)) on the sonochemical removal of nitric oxide (NO) have been studied in a bubble column reactor. The initial concentration of NO studied ranged from about 500 to 1040 ppm. NaCl in the concentration range of 0.01-0.5 M was used as the electrolyte to study the effect of ionic strength. At the low NaCl concentration (0.01 M), the percent fractional removal of NO with initial concentration of 1040 ppm was enhanced significantly, while as the NaCl concentration increased, the positive effects were less pronounced. The presence of approximately 2520 ppm SO(2) in combination with 0.01 M NaCl further enhanced NO removal. However, with a NO initial concentration of 490 ppm, the addition of NaCl was detrimental to NO removal at all NaCl concentration levels. The combinative effect of sonication and chemical oxidation using 0.005-0.05 M oxone was also studied. While the lower concentrations of HSO(5)(-) enhanced NO removal efficiency, higher concentrations were detrimental depending on the initial concentration of NO. It was also demonstrated that in the presence of ultrasound, the smallest concentration of oxone was needed to obtain optimal fractional conversion of NO.

Sonochemistry in environmental remediation. 2. Heterogeneous sonophotocatalytic oxidation processes for the treatment of pollutants in water

Recent advances in advanced oxidation technologies for applications in environmental remediation involve the use of acoustic cavitation. Cavitation is the formation, growth, and implosive collapse of gas- or vapor-filled microbubbles formed from acoustical wave-induced compression/ rarefaction in a body of liquid. Cavitation is effective in treating most liquid-phase pollutants but it is highly energy intensive and not economical or practically feasible when used alone. One of the most interesting topics in the recent advances in environmental sonochemistry is the intensification of the ultrasonic degradation process by coupling ultrasound with other types of energy, chemical oxidants, or photocataysts. In Part II of this series, a critical review of the applications of ultrasound in environmental remediation focusing on the simultaneous or hybrid use of ultrasonic irradiation and photocatalysis in aqueous solutions, namely, sonophotocatalytic oxidation processes, is presented.

Sonochemistry in environmental remediation. 1. Combinative and hybrid sonophotochemical oxidation processes for the treatment of pollutants in water

Sonoprocessing is the utilization of sonic and ultrasonic waves in chemical synthesis and processes. It is a new and rapidly growing research field with broad applications in environmental engineering, green chemical synthesis, and processing. The application of this environmentally benign technique in environmental remediation is currently under active research and development. Sonochemical oxidation is effective in treating toxic effluents and reducing toxicity. However, the ultrasonic treatment is highly energy intensive since sonication is relatively inefficient with respect to total input energy and is therefore not economically attractive or feasible alone. Hence, sonochemistry has not yet received much attention as an alternative for industrial and large-scale chemical and environmental processes. One of the most interesting topics in the recent advances in sonochemistry is the possibility of double or more excitations with ultrasound and other types of energy. The coupling of ultrasound with other free energy sources (i.e., UV) or chemical oxidation utilizing H2O2, O3, or ferrous ion presents interesting and attractive approaches. Therefore, many recent efforts have been devoted to improving the efficiency of sonochemical reactions by exploiting the advantages of combinative or hybrid processes involving the simultaneous or sequential use of ultrasonic irradiation and other advanced oxidation processes, electrochemical processes, and biological treatment. This paper provides a critical review of the applications of ultrasound in environmental remediation, focusing on recent developments and unifying analysis of combinative or hybrid systems, namely, sonophotochemical oxidation processes.

Sonochemical decomposition of volatile and non-volatile organic compounds--a comparative study

Sonochemical degradation which combines destruction of the target compounds by free radical reaction and thermal cleavage is one of the recent advanced oxidation processes (AOP) and proven to be effective for removing low concentration organic pollutants from aqueous streams. This work describes the degradation of several organic compounds of varying volatility in aqueous solution in two types of ultrasonic reactors. The process variables studied include initial concentration of the organics, temperature, and type of saturated gas. The effects of additional oxidant and electrolyte were also examined. A kinetic model was tested to determine its ability to predict the degradation rate constant of different volatile organic compounds at different initial conditions. A figure of merit for the electrical energy consumption for the two types of ultrasonic reactors is also presented.
