Abstract
BACKGROUND Nickel (Ni) is a heavy metal and an environmental pollutant that is harmful to humans because of its carcinogenicity and toxic effects on several tissues and organs. Due to their widespread use concerns have been raised about the potential adverse effects of Ni and its compounds on human health. Ni compounds induce oxidative stress in cells by modifying the redox equilibrium. This work studied the protective role of the plant antioxidant esculin (ES) against nickel chloride (NiCl2)-induced oxidative damage and cytotoxicity in isolated human red blood cells (RBC). METHODS Human RBC were first incubated with varying concentrations of ES (0.25-1.0 mM) for 2 h at 37 °C, followed by addition of 0.5 mM NiCl2 and further incubation for 24 h at 37 °C. RESULTS Treatment of RBC with NiCl2 alone increased the production of reactive oxygen species and significantly enhanced methemoglobin level, heme degradation, free iron release and hydrogen peroxide content. It also led to oxidation of cellular thiol groups, proteins and lipids. The glutathione content, total sulfhydryl groups, nitric oxide level and free amino groups were decreased. The activities of antioxidant, metabolic and plasma membrane enzymes were inhibited and the antioxidant capacity of RBC was lowered. However, pre-incubation of RBC with ES greatly mitigated the NiCl2-induced alterations in these parameters in an ES concentration-dependent manner. In all cases ES alone did not exhibit any significant toxic effect. This was confirmed by electron microscopic analysis of RBC. Treatment with NiCl2 alone resulted in the conversion of biconcave discoidal RBC to echinocytes but this change in cell morphology was greatly prevented in the presence of ES. The ES alone treated RBC did not show altered cell morphology. CONCLUSION These results suggest that ES can be potentially used as a cytoprotectant against Ni-induced toxicity.

Abstract
Introduction: Coumarins are naturally occuring metabolites from plants and a few micro-organisms. They have been widely used in the food and drug industry in their natural or synthetic forms. Numerous coumarins possess several biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcers, anti-tumour, anti-microbial, anti-coagulant. The aim of this study was to assess the bioactivity, and toxicity of coumarins from African medicinal plants. Methods: We searched online databases and search engines such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science for key terms such as coumarins, toxicity, bioavailability, bioactivity with appropriate Boolean operators. Only full-length research articles published in English between 1956 to 2023 were reviewed. Results: We recorded 22 coumarins from 15 plant species from Africa. Most of the plant species (33%) were from North Africa. These were followed by East Africa at 21%, then West, and Central Africa at 18.2% each. Most of the coumarins (21.3%) were isolated from the entire plant and the leaves (19.1%) and most of them (46.7%) had some antimicrobial activity. Five coumarins viz osthole, pseudocordatolide C & calanolide, chartreusin and esculetin had either antitumor or anticancer activity. Six coumarins had varying levels and types of toxicity ranging from inhibiting blood clotting as anticoagulants, to cytotoxic effects, causing hyperventilation, tremor, & photophobia, pulmonary haemorrhage, carcinogenic activity, severe neurotoxicity, hepato- and phototoxicity. Conclusion: Several African medicinal plants are sources of various coumarins that possess several biological activities as well as toxicities. This calls for more research into their safety and efficacy because of their wide spread applications as therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Currently, agricultural production generates large amounts of organic waste, both from the maintenance of farms and crops (agricultural wastes) and from the industrialization of the product (food industry waste). In the case of Actinidia cultivation, agricultural waste groups together leaves, flowers, stems and roots while food industry by-products are represented by discarded fruits, skin and seeds. All these matrices are now underexploited and so, they can be revalued as a natural source of ingredients to be applied in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industries. Kiwifruit composition (phenolic compounds, volatile compounds, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, etc.) is an outstanding basis, especially for its high content in vitamin C and phenolic compounds. These compounds possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial activities, among other beneficial properties for health, but stand out for their digestive enhancement and prebiotic role. Although the biological properties of kiwi fruit have been analyzed, few studies show the high content of compounds with biological functions present in these by-products. Therefore, agricultural and food industry wastes derived from processing kiwi are regarded as useful matrices for the development of innovative applications in the food (pectins, softeners, milk coagulants, and colorants), cosmetic (ecological pigments) and pharmaceutical industry (fortified, functional, nutraceutical, or prebiotic foods). This strategy will provide economic and environmental benefits, turning this industry into a sustainable and environmentally friendly production system, promoting a circular and sustainable economy.

Abstract
Esculin is structurally a hydroxycoumarin found in various medicinal plants. This study investigates the binding mode of esculin with bovine serum albumin by employing numerous spectroscopic studies and molecular docking approaches. Ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy revealed ground state complex formation between esculin and bovine serum albumin. At the same time, steady-state fluorescence studies showed quenching in the fluorescence emission spectra of BSA in the presence of esculin. To get insight into the location of the binding pocket of esculin on BSA, warfarin and ibuprofen site markers were used. Competitive site marker displacement assay revealed that esculin binds to Sudlow's site I (subdomain IIA) in bovine serum albumin. Thermodynamic parameters suggested that hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction stabilizes the esculin-BSA complex. Förster's non-radiation energy transfer analysis described the high propensity of energy transfer between bovine serum albumin and esculin. The molecular docking approach facilitated locating the binding pocket, amino acid residues involved, types of interacting forces, and binding energy (ΔG) between esculin and BSA. Circular dichroism revealed the effect of the binding of esculin on the secondary structure and helped understand the thermal unfolding profile of BSA in the presence of esculin.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
Kiwifruit black spot disease has become increasingly widespread in many ‘CuiXiang’ kiwifruit plantings regions. This research was aimed at the pathogenic microorganisms of black spot of the ‘CuiXiang’ cultivar. Physiological, morphological and transcriptional characteristics between black spot fruit and healthy fruits were evaluated. Then, it applied a high-throughput internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing to analyze the black spot disease microbial community. The cell structure showed that mycelium was attached to the surface of the kiwifruit through black spot, and that consequently the mitochondria were damaged, starch particles were reduced, and shelf life was shortened. Transcriptome revealed that different genes in kiwifruit with black spot disease were involved in cell wall modification, pathogen perception, and signal transduction. ITS sequencing results described the disease-causing fungi and found that the microbial diversity of black spot-diseased fruit was lower than that of healthy fruit. We predict that candidate pathogenic fungi Cladosporium cladosporioides, Diaporthe phaseolorum, Alternaria alternata, and Trichothecium roseum may cause black spot. This study was to explore the pathogenic fungal community of ‘CuiXiang’ kiwifruit black spot disease and to provide essential information for field prevention.

Abstract
Kiwi, a fruit from plants of the genus Actinidia, is one of the famous fruits with thousand years of edible history. In the past twenty years, a great deal of research has been done on the chemical constituents of the Actinidia species. A large number of secondary metabolites including triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenols, etc. have been identified from differents parts of Actinidia plants, which exhibited significant in vitro and in vivo pharmacological activities including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-oxidative, anti-bacterial, and anti-diabetic activities. In order to fully understand the chemical components and biological activities of Actinidia plants, and to improve their further research, development and utilization, this review summarizes the compounds extracted from different parts of Actinidia plants since 1959 to 2020, classifies the types of constituents, reports on the pharmacological activities of relative compounds and medicinal potentials.

Abstract
Fraxin (FX) (7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin 8-glucoside) is a typical natural product of the coumarin family. This compound was shown to protect endothelial cells from oxidative stress; however, the nature of its antioxidant properties is still ambiguous. In this study, we report on a systematic evaluation of the radical scavenging activity of FX using a two-tier protocol based on thermodynamic and kinetic calculations. The results show that FX has moderate activity in the aqueous physiological environment against a range of radicals including HO˙, CCl3O˙, CCl3OO˙, NO2, , and HOO˙. The latter was examined in detail due to the prevalence of HOO˙ as a source of oxidative stress in biological systems. HOO˙ scavenging activity was promising in the gas phase but low in physiological environments with k overall = 1.57 × 106, 3.13 × 102 and 2.68 × 103 M-1 s-1 in the gas phase, pentyl ethanoate and water solvents, respectively. The formal hydrogen transfer mechanism at the O7-H bond dominates the hydroperoxyl radical scavenging of FX in the nonpolar media, whereas, in the polar environment, the activity is exerted by the single electron transfer mechanism of the anion state. This activity falls behind typical antioxidants such as Trolox, ascorbic acid, and trans-resveratrol under the studied conditions. Thus FX may have multiple health benefits, but it is not an outstanding natural antioxidant.

Abstract
Hardy kiwi (Actinidia arguta) is a climbing, perennial and dioecious vine from Actinidiaceae family, native from Asia and valued as ornamental and traditional medicine. In the last decade, the growing interest as fruit-bearing plant encourage the expanding cultivation of A. arguta mainly to fruits production, particularly in Europe and North America. A. arguta plants have an extensive range ofbioactive compoundsthat can be obtained from different botanical structures, such as fruits, leaves, flowers and stems. These bioactive molecules, with well-recognized health-promoting properties, include phenolic compounds, minerals, carbohydrates or even volatile substances, with a great potential to be used in several formulations of food products. Phytochemical studies on this plant reported hypoglycemic effects as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, among others. The traditional uses ofA. arguta have been experimentally proved byin vitroandin vivostudies, in which its bioactivities were associated to its phytochemical composition. This review aims to assess and summarize the phytochemical and healthy properties ofthe different botanical parts of A. arguta, describing their bioactive composition and exploring it potential functional properties on foodstuffs.

Abstract
Coumarin (2H-1-benzopyran-2-one) is a plant-derived natural product known for its pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer, antihypertensive, antitubercular, anticonvulsant, antiadipogenic, antihyperglycemic, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. Dietary exposure to benzopyrones is significant as these compounds are found in vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts, coffee, tea, and wine. In view of the established low toxicity, relative cheapness, presence in the diet, and occurrence in various herbal remedies of coumarins, it appears prudent to evaluate their properties and applications further.
