Abstract
Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor widely metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. Besides, it is a P-glycoprotein substrate. Moreover, serotonin transporters and serotonin receptors are involved in its efficacy and safety. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of polymorphisms of metabolizing enzymes, transporters and receptors on the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and tolerability of sertraline in healthy volunteers. Forty-six healthy volunteers (24 men and 22 women) receiving a 100-mg single oral dose of sertraline were genotyped for 17 genetic variants of CYP enzymes (CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6), ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1), solute carrier family 6 member 4 (SLC6A4), 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A (HTR2A) and 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2C (HTR2C) genes. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters were similar in men and women. Polymorphisms in CYP2C19 and CYP2B6 genes influenced sertraline pharmacokinetics, with a greater effect of CYP2C19. Individuals carrying defective alleles for CYP2C19 and CYP2B6 showed higher area under the curve (AUC) and half-life (T1/2 ). Moreover, CYP2C19*17 was related to a decreased AUC and T1/2 . No significant effect was found for polymorphisms in CYP2C9, CYP2D6 and ABCB1 on sertraline pharmacokinetics. Sertraline had a small heart rate-lowering effect, directly related to maximum concentration (Cmax ) and the presence of ABCB1 minor alleles. Sertraline had no significant effect on blood pressure and QTc. There was a tendency to present more adverse drug reactions in women and individuals with higher AUC of sertraline, such as CYP2C19 intermediate metabolizers and CYP2B6 G516T T/T individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this study is to review and summarize the literature exploring the genetic basis for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and postpartum depression (PPD). RECENT FINDINGS There is more evidence for a genetic basis for PPD than for PMDD, but only when PPD is defined as beginning in the immediate postpartum time period. Familial, genome-wide linkage and association studies, and candidate gene studies, most in the past 10 years, have examined the genetic etiology of reproductive affective disorders, including PMDD and PPD. The most commonly studied genes include SERT, COMT, MAOA, BDNF, and ESR1 and 2. This qualitative review of the recent literature finds limited evidence so far for the genetic basis for PMDD, with both familial and candidate gene studies having negative or conflicting results. Evidence is stronger for the genetic basis for PPD, with positive associations found in family studies and in several genes associated with major depression as well as genes involved in estrogen signaling but only when PPD onset is shortly after delivery. Epigenetic biomarkers on genes responsive to estrogen have also been found to predict PPD. Our findings underscore the need for additional studies with larger samples, as well as the crucial importance of timing in the definition of PPD for genetic studies.

Abstract
Background Serotonin promotes pulmonary arterial vasoconstriction and pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell proliferation, thereby having the potential to increase pulmonary arterial blood pressure. Although serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) might inhibit further deterioration in patients with manifest pulmonary arterial hypertension, they may induce pulmonary hypertension in healthy newborns after fetal exposure. As it is unclear whether treatment with SRIs affects pulmonary hemodynamics in adults without pulmonary hypertension, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of SRIs on pulmonary hemodynamics in such subjects. Methods Sixteen patients with stable angina pectoris scheduled for first time coronary artery bypass grafting were included in the study. Of these 8 were currently treated with an SRI (the SRI group) and 8 were not (the control group). Pulmonary arterial pressures were measured before induction of anesthesia by means of a pulmonary artery catheter. Serotonin transporter and 5-HT2A receptor gene polymorphisms and platelet 5-HT2A receptor expression were studied to elucidate their possible role as modifying factors. Results No patients in any of the groups had pulmonary arterial hypertension. Mean pulmonary artery pressure was 15.0 mmHg in the SRI group and 14.5 mmHg in the control group (P = 0.50; 95% confidence interval for the difference, -2.9 to +3.9 mmHg). Neither were there any significant differences between the groups for any of the other hemodynamic variables studied. The various gene polymorphisms and the extent of platelet 5-HT2A receptor expression did not influence the hemodynamic variables. Conclusions SRI treatment did not significantly influence pulmonary hemodynamics in patients without pulmonary hypertension. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a mood disorder disrupting social and/or occupational life of affected women. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder etiology is unknown, although a pivotal role is played by the serotoninergic system. Indeed, one of the most effective treatments is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Several studies have proposed a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-like role for myo-inositol, likely due to the fact that myo-inositol is the second messenger of serotonin. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of myo-inositol in the treatment of PMDD. METHODS We used a two-phase clinical trial approach (phase I: placebo washout; phase II: comparisons between treatment and placebo) and treated PMMD patients with two different myo-inositol formulations: powder or soft gel capsules. We decided to test these two formulations because according to the manufacturer, 0.6 g of myo-inositol in soft gel capsule has a pharmacokinetic equivalent to 2 g of myo-inositol in powder. RESULTS Our results showed a significant improvement of three different scales: a reduction in the Daily Symptoms Records scale and an improvement of the Hamilton Depression Rating and Clinical Global Impression-Severity of Illness scales. Results were similar for both formulations. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, by using a new pharmaceutical formulation, we were able to clearly prove the efficacy of myo-inositol in PMDD.

Abstract
Polymorphisms in genes coding for dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors and transporters have been associated with the clinical effects and adverse drug reactions of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency and combinations of common polymorphisms in the dopamine transporter (DAT1), dopamine D(2) receptor (DRD2), dopamine D(3) receptor (DRD3), serotonin transporter (5HTT), and serotonin 2A receptor (5HTR2A) genes in a Norwegian population. To determine the background frequency in the population, 250 blood samples were consecutively collected from healthy Norwegian blood donors (125 men and 125 women; mean age: 48±11 years). Samples were tested for DAT1 VNTR, DRD2 Taq1A, DRD3 Ser9Gly, 5HTTLPR, and four polymorphisms (102 T>C, His452Tyr, 516 C>T, and Thr25Asn) in the 5HTR2A, using polymerase chain reaction and real-time polymerase chain reaction. We observed the frequency of the nine-repeat allele of DAT1 VNTR polymorphism as 20% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.18-0.23), the A1 allele of DRD2 Taq1A polymorphism as 21% (95% CI: 0.19-0.23), the A1 allele of DRD3 Ser9Gly polymorphism as 68% (95% CI: 0.66-0.70), the short allele of 5HTTLPR as 38% (95% CI: 0.36-0.40), and the T allele of 5HTR2A 102 T>C polymorphism as 41% (95% CI: 0.39-0.41), and the frequencies of 5HTR2A His452Tyr and 5HTR2A Thr25Asn were 93% and 95%, respectively. The tested polymorphisms showed differences compared with other European populations. Further studies are necessary to better understand the effect of these alleles and their combinations on personality, mental disorders, drug response, and adverse reactions of psychotropic drugs.

Abstract
Serotonin (5-HT) pathways play an important role in the pathophysiology of anorexia nervosa (AN). In this study, we investigated functional characteristics of the platelet 5-HT transporter and platelet 5-HT content in AN patients at various stages of their illness in comparison to healthy control woman (HCW) controlling for the 5-HTTLPR deletion/insertion polymorphism and other confounding variables. Fasting blood samples of 58 acutely underweight AN patients (acAN, BMI = 15.2 ± 1.4), 26 AN patients of the initial acAN sample after short-term/partial weight restoration (BMI = 17.3 ± 0.9), 36 weight-recovered AN patients (recAN, BMI = 20.7 ± 2.2) and 58 HCW (BMI = 21.6 ± 2.0) were assessed for kinetic characteristics of platelet 5-HT uptake (V (max), K (m)) and platelet 5-HT content. Plasma leptin served as an indicator of malnutrition. Mean V (max) and K (m) values were significantly higher in recAN subjects in comparison to HCW (2.05 ± 0.62 vs. 1.66 ± 0.40 nmol 5-HT/10(9) platelets min and 432 ± 215 vs. 315 ± 136 nmol, respectively) but there were no differences in platelet 5-HT content (464.8 ± 210.6 vs. 472.0 ± 162.2 ng 5-HT/10(9) platelets). 5-HT parameters in acAN patients and HCW were similar. 5-HTTLPR variants were not related to 5-HT platelet variables. In the longitudinal part of the study we found significantly increased 5-HT content but unchanged 5-HT uptake in AN patients after short-term/partial weight restoration. Our results highlight the importance of malnutrition for the interpretation of abnormalities in neurotransmitter systems in AN. Changes in platelet 5-HT transporter activity were related to the stage of the illness but not to 5-HTTLPR genotype. Increased V (max) and K (m) in recovered AN patients might mirror adaptive modulations of the 5-HT system.

Abstract
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a mood disorder affecting about 5% of women and is associated with substantial morbidity. Albeit inconsistently, PMDD is described as being characterized by heritable personality traits. Although PMDD is a heritable disorder, it is unclear whether any of the heritable susceptibility to PMDD resides in heritable personality traits. In groups of carefully characterized women with PMDD (n=68) and controls (n=56), we attempted to determine whether diagnosis-related traits could be confirmed, as well as to determine whether such traits were associated with SNPs in estrogen receptor alpha (ESR-1) that we previously demonstrated were associated with PMDD. We observed 7/25 traits to be significantly different in patients and controls and further showed that 11/12 significant associations observed between these 7 traits and 16 ESR-1 SNPs involved the intron 4 SNPs previously shown to be the locus of the association with PMDD. While several interactions between genotype and diagnosis were observed, the effect of genotype in most instances was in the same direction in patients and controls. These data demonstrate affective state-independent personality traits that distinguish patients with PMDD from controls and further support the relevance of ESR-1 polymorphic variants in the regulation of non-reproductive behaviors.

Abstract
As many as 7% of women experience significant social or occupational dysfunction as a result of severe premenstrual mood disturbance. Biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors are implicated in the cause of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, but the interaction between these factors remains to be elucidated. Mental health practitioners can aid women by providing diagnostic clarity and by initiating an integrated step-wise management approach.

Abstract
Up to 7% of women report premenstrual symptoms severe enough to impair daily function, and are said to suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Although PMDD is predominately regarded as a biologically based condition, sociocultural factors, and particularly life stress, past sexual abuse, and cultural socialization, likely interact with hormonal changes. This integrative model has implications for etiology and treatment of PMDD.

Abstract
Many women in their reproductive years experience some mood, behavioral. or physical symptoms in the week prior to menses. Variability exists in the level of symptom burden in that some women experience mild symptoms, whereas a small minority experience severe and debilitating symptoms. For an estimated 5%-8% of premenopausal women, work or social functioning are affected by severe premenstrual syndrome. Many women in this group meet diagnostic criteria for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Among women who suffer from PMDD, mood and behavioral symptoms such as irritability, depressed mood, tension, and labile mood dominate. Somatic complaints, including breast tenderness and bloating, also can prove disruptive to women's overall functioning and quality of life. Recent evidence suggests that individual sensitivity to cyclical variations in levels of gonadal hormones may predispose certain women to experience these mood, behavioral, and somatic symptoms. Treatments include: antidepressants of the serotonin reuptake inhibitor class, taken intermittently or throughout the menstrual cycle; medications that suppress ovarian cyclicity; and newer oral contraceptives with novel progestins.

The construct of major depressive disorder makes no etiological assumptions about populations with diverse symptom clusters. "Depressed mood" and "loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities" are core features of major depressive episode, though a strong case can be made to pay increasing attention to symptoms of fatigue, sleep disturbance, anxiety, and neurocognitive and sexual dysfunction in the diagnosis and evaluation of treatment outcome. Mood, guilt, work, and interest, as well as psychic anxiety, are consistently identified across validated subscales of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale as prevalent and sensitive to change with existing treatments. A major limitation of these antidepressant therapies is their narrow spectrum of action. While the core "mood and interest" symptoms have been the main focus of attention, the associated symptoms listed above are often unaffected or exacerbated by current treatments. Careful clinical evaluation should address all of these dimensions, recognizing that improvement may occur sooner in some symptoms (eg, mood) compared with others (eg, sleep disturbance).

Abstract
Most women of reproductive age have some physical discomfort or dysphoria in the weeks before menstruation. Symptoms are often mild, but can be severe enough to substantially affect daily activities. About 5-8% of women thus suffer from severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS); most of these women also meet criteria for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Mood and behavioural symptoms, including irritability, tension, depressed mood, tearfulness, and mood swings, are the most distressing, but somatic complaints, such as breast tenderness and bloating, can also be problematic. We outline theories for the underlying causes of severe PMS, and describe two main methods of treating it: one targeting the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis, and the other targeting brain serotonergic synapses. Fluctuations in gonadal hormone levels trigger the symptoms, and thus interventions that abolish ovarian cyclicity, including long-acting analogues of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) or oestradiol (administered as patches or implants), effectively reduce the symptoms, as can some oral contraceptives. The effectiveness of serotonin reuptake inhibitors, taken throughout the cycle or during luteal phases only, is also well established.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a heritable mood disorder that is triggered by gonadal steroids during the luteal phase in susceptible women. METHODS We performed haplotype analyses of estrogen receptors alpha and beta (ESR1 and ESR2) in 91 women with prospectively confirmed PMDD and 56 control subjects to investigate possible sources of the genetic susceptibility to affective dysregulation induced by normal levels of gonadal steroids. We also examined associations with the valine (Val)158methionine (Met) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the gene for catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme involved in estrogen metabolism and prefrontal cortical activation. RESULTS Four SNPs in intron 4 of ESR1 showed significantly different genotype and allele distributions between patients and control subjects. Significant case-control differences were seen in sliding-window analyses of two-, three-, and four-marker haplotypes but only in those haplotypes containing SNPs in intron 4 that were positive in the single-locus analysis. No significant associations were observed with ESR2 or with the COMT Val158Met polymorphism, although the significant associations with ESR1 were observed only in those with the Val/Val genotype. CONCLUSIONS These are the first positive (albeit preliminary) genetic findings in this reproductive endocrine-related mood disorder and involve the receptor for a hormone that is pathogenically relevant.

Abstract
Genetic studies in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) have been motivated by clinical, epidemiological, and/or neuropathological observations in SIDS victims, with subsequent pursuit of candidate genes in five categories: (1) genes for ion channel proteins based on electrocardiographic evidence of prolonged QT intervals in SIDS victims, (2) gene for serotonin transporter based on decreased serotonergic receptor binding in brainstems of SIDS victims, (3) genes pertinent to the early embryology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) (and with a link to the 5-HT system) based on reports of ANS dysregulation in SIDS victims, (4) genes for nicotine metabolizing enzymes based on evidence of cigarette smoking as a modifiable risk factor for SIDS, and (5) genes regulating inflammation, energy production, hypoglycemia, and thermal regulation based on reports of postnatal infection, low birth weight, and/or overheating in SIDS victims. Evidence for each of these classes of candidate genes is reviewed in detail. As this review indicates, a number of genetically controlled pathways appear to be involved in at least some cases of SIDS. Given the diversity of results to date, genetic studies support the clinical impression that SIDS is heterogeneous with more than one entity and with more than one possible genetic etiology. Future studies should consider expanded phenotypic features that might help clarify the heterogeneity and improve the predictive value of the identified genetic factors. Such features should be evaluated to the extent possible in both SIDS victims and their family members. With 2,162 infants dying from SIDS in 2003 in the U.S. alone, and improved but still imperfect parent and caretaker compliance with known modifiable risk factors for SIDS, it behooves clinicians, researchers, and parents to combine efforts to reach a common goal. The message of the "Back to Sleep" campaign needs to be re-introduced/re-engineered to reach families and caretakers of all ethnic groups. Clinicians and researchers need to gently inform new SIDS parents about the opportunity to contribute tissue to the NICHD-funded University of Maryland Brain and Tissue Bank. By expanding the network of clinicians, scientists, and families working together, and by combined efforts in a collaborative multi-center study of candidate genes and/or genomics, the discovery of the genetic profile of the infant at risk for SIDS can ultimately be determined.

Abstract
Aims Recent genetic studies have linked serotonin-related genetic polymorphisms with diverse disorders characterized by functional somatic symptoms, including chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Methods We investigated three serotonin-related genetic polymorphisms by screening genomic DNA of 36 temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. Results A significant increase of longer alleles (l and xl) was found in the TMD patients compared to the controls both by the genotype-wise and the allele-wise analyses (both p < 0.01 by χ2 test and Fisher's exact test). Conclusion Genetic factors that involve the serotonergic system may play a role in the pathogenesis of TMD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate whether common polymorphisms of key genes that control the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) pathway are associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder. STUDY DESIGN The study sample comprised 53 women with clinically diagnosed premenstrual dysphoric disorder (age range, 27-46 years; mean age, 37.7 years) and 52 healthy control subjects (age range, 22-48 years; mean age, 36.2 years). Eight polymorphisms that encode the 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter (LPR, VNTR-2, and 3' UTR G/T), tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1 G-6526A, G-5806T, and A218C), and monoamine oxidase A (monoamine oxidase A promoter VNTR-1 and exon 8 Fnu 4H1) were genotyped. Genotype and allelic frequencies were analyzed by chi-square test and stepwise logistic regression analysis. RESULTS There was no significant association between any genotype and clinical category and no significant allelic distribution profiles in either the premenstrual dysphoric disorder group or the control group. CONCLUSION These findings do not support a major role for common 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter, TPH1, and monoamine oxidase A polymorphisms in contributing to susceptibility to premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Abstract
Impaired serotonin transmission has been suggested to be implicated in the pathophysiology of bulimia nervosa. As an indirect measure of brain serotonergic activity, the binding of tritiated ligands to platelet serotonin transporters has been studied in bulimia nervosa as well as in other putatively serotonin-related psychiatric disorders. In this study, the density and affinity of platelet serotonin transporters were assessed in 20 women meeting the DSM-IV criteria for bulimia nervosa and in 14 controls without previous or ongoing eating disorder using [(3)H]paroxetine as a ligand. In comparison to controls, women with bulimia nervosa had a significantly reduced number of platelet binding sites (B(max) = 721 +/- 313 vs. 1145 +/- 293 fmol/mg protein) and an increase in the affinity for the ligand demonstrated by a lower dissociaton constant (K(d) = 33 +/- 10 vs. 44 +/- 10 pM). A significant correlation between B(max) and K(d) values was found in patients but not in controls. Our results support the notion that bulimia nervosa is associated with a reduction in platelet serotonin transporter density. In addition, our study is the first to report that this reduced transporter density in women with bulimia nervosa is accompanied by an increase in the affinity of the transporter for the ligand.

Abstract
Premenstrual symptoms can pose significant problems for a large number of women; this small exploratory study was designed to investigate biological markers that may provide etiological clues. Using an algorithm based on daily symptom charting for two months, 15 participants were assigned to one of three study groups: non-symptomatic (n = 9), probable PMS (n = 3) and probable PMDD (n = 3). During two overnight admissions, one prior to and one following the onset of menses, participants had blood drawn to assess the level of available serotonin via one of its metabolites, 5-HIAA. The three groups exhibited potentially significant differences in several biological markers. This study's results are consistent with a hypothesis implicating serotonin in the generation of premenstrual symptomology.

Abstract
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a periodic, recurrent, debilitating condition with severe psychological or affective symptoms during the late luteal phase. PMDD often begins during adolescence. Dysregulation of the serotonergic system has been proposed recently as its cause and fluoxetine has been recommended as an appropriate treatment. We report 3 adolescents with PMDD who were treated for 2 years with fluoxetine, resulting in complete symptom resolution, and review the clinical trials supporting its use. Case reports of successfully treated teenagers are an addition to the accumulated evidence of the efficacy of fluoxetine for treatment of PMDD in adult women. Together they may provide some justification for the compassionate use of fluoxetine for adolescent girls who are being disabled by PMDD. However, more research is called for: a randomized placebo-controlled trial in adolescents is warranted.

Abstract
Serotonergic hypofunction may underlie at least part of the symptoms that are experienced by women with premenstrual complaints, including memory deficits. In the current study we investigated changes in memory functions in the premenstrual phase compared to the early postmenstrual phase in 16 women with premenstrual complaints. In addition, the effect of an acute serotonergic stimulation by administration of an alpha-lactalbumin protein on premenstrual memory performance was assessed using a double-blind placebo-controlled crossover design. It was found that both short-term and long-term memory for words (30-word learning task) and abstract figures (abstract visual learning task) were mildly impaired in the premenstrual phase. Administration of alpha-lactalbumin during the premenstrual phase could only partially attenuate the memory performance decrements that are seen in the premenstrual phase. Specifically, alphalactalbumin improved long-term memory for abstract figures, but not for words. There were no effects of menstrual phase or alpha-lactalbumin on planning functions (computerized Tower of London). The data suggest that serotonergic hypofunction may play a role in premenstrual memory decline, but serotonergic mechanisms cannot fully account for observed cognitive changes in the premenstrual phase.

Abstract
Serotonin transporter, measured by the specific binding of [(3)H]paroxetine, has been reported to be reduced in circulating lymphocytes of patients with major depression. Due to this observation, the objective of the present report was to determine the levels of serotonin transporter mRNA in lymphocytes obtained from 29 major depression patients (4 men, age 33.10+/-1.63 years) and from 30 subjects included as a control group (4 men, age 37.54+/-2.18 years) using RT-PCR. The patients were diagnosed according to the criteria of the American Psychiatric Association, and had a severity of depression of 32.68+/-1.55 determined by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. The DNA was submitted to polymerase chain reaction with primers for the 5' regulatory region of human serotonin transporter, which could show the long and the short allelic forms of the transporter gene for the 5 HTTLPR polymorphism. Semiquantitative analysis was performed using beta-actin as internal and external standard. Control subjects presented the two allelic forms in 9.09% and depressed patients in 8.69%. The long variant was present in 73% of controls and in 60% of patients, without significant differences. There was a significant reduction in mRNA in depressed patients expressing the long allele. The number of immunofluorescent lymphocytes, labeled with a specific antibody against serotonin transporter, was reduced in the patients, as well as CD3+ lymphocytes. Serotonin and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in platelet-poor plasma or lymphocytes did not differ between depressed patients and controls. The reduction in lymphocyte serotonin transporter described in major depression might be due to a decrease in the level of its mRNA and in the number of cells expressing it. These observations might implicate that functional modifications are associated with nervous-immune interactions in depression.

Abstract
Measuring heart rate variability (HRV) is a way to assess the autonomic regulation of the heart. Decreased HRV, indicating reduced parasympathetic tone, has previously been found in depression and anxiety disorders. The objective of this study was to assess HRV in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). To this end, time domain variables and frequency domain variables were assessed in 28 women with PMDD and in 11 symptom-free controls during both the symptomatic luteal phase and the non-symptomatic follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Two variables reflecting vagal activity in the time domain, the root mean square of differences of successive normal RR intervals (rMSSD) and standard deviation of normal RR intervals (SDNN) were lower in PMDD patients, but this difference was statistically significant in the follicular phase only. The most important vagal measure in the frequency domain, supine high frequency (HF), also appeared lower in PMDD subjects during the follicular phase. It is suggested that PMDD may be associated with reduced vagal tone compared to controls and that this difference is most apparent in the non-symptomatic follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.
