Thermal behaviour of crustaceans

Specific thermoreceptors or putative multimodal thermoreceptors are not known in Crustacea. However, behavioural studies on thermal avoidance and preference and on the effects of temperature on motor activity indicate that the thermosensitivity of crustaceans may be in the range 0.2-2 degrees C. Work on planktonic crustaceans suggests that they respond particularly to changes in temperature by klinokinesis and orthokinesis. The thermal behaviour of crustaceans is modified by thermal acclimation among other factors. The acclimation of the critical maximum temperature is an example of resistance acclimation, while the acclimation of preference behaviour may be classified as capacity acclimation of some other function. In crustaceans, the use of the concepts stenothermy and eurythermy at the species level is questionable, and it is not possible to divide crustacean species into thermal guilds as suggested for fishes. Thermal preference behaviour contributes to fitness in different ways in different species, often by maximising the aerobic metabolic scope for activity. In crustaceans the peripheral nervous system seems to have retained the capacity for thermosensitivity and thermal acclimation independently of the central nervous system control of behaviour.

Electrophysiological responses to thermal stimuli in peripheral nerves of the African giant snail, Archachatina marginata S

In Archachatina marginata S. the activity of 264 single units of the lip nerves and the tentacle nerve was recorded during thermal stimulation of the lip region. 17.8% of all fibres responded with an increase in neuronal activity to temperature changes in the range from 12 to 36 degrees C. The amount of fibres responding to peripheral warm or cold stimuli varied between the investigated nerves. In the tentacle nerve (N. olfactorius) 30.5% of the neurons responded either to peripheral warming or cooling. In the three lip nerves N. labialis internus, N. labialis externus, and N. labialis medianus 20, 17, and 9.5%, respectively, proved to be thermoresponsive. Additional behavioural tests revealed that the thermopreferendum of Archachatina marginata S. is in the broad range between 13 and 32 degrees C.

Reactions of central neurons to peripheral thermal stimuli in the snail Helix pomatia L

In Helix pomatia L. recordings have been made of 91 single neurons from the cerebral ganglia during peripheral thermal stimulation of the lip region. Temperatures ranged between 12 and 32 degrees C. Different reactions to thermal stimulation could be observed: hyperpolarisation (n=43), depolarisation (n=9), increasing frequency of action potentials (n=10), decreasing frequency of action potentials (n=3). A number of cells did not show any changes in neuronal activity (n=26). The assumption that distinct cell clusters are responsible for the processing of thermal stimuli had to be rejected since cells responding to peripheral thermal stimulation were found in all parts of the ganglia.
