Abstract
This review describes the formation of six-membered heterocyclic compounds and their fused analogues under microwave activation using modern organic transformations including cyclocondensation, cycloaddition, multicomponents and other modular reactions. The review is divided according to the main heterocycle types in order of increasing complexity, starting with heterocyclic systems containing one, two and three heteroatoms and their fused analogues. Recent microwave applications are reviewed, with special focus on the chemistry of bioactive compounds. Selected examples from the 2006 to 2015 literature are discussed.

Abstract
Twelve new diterpenes, caryopincaolide A-L (1-4, 11-12, 16-19, 27-28), together with twenty-eight known diterpenes, have been isolated from the whole plant of Caryopteris incana (Thunb.) Miq. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR, IR, X-ray crystal diffraction and mass spectroscopic data, as well as ECD calculations. All compounds were tested for in vitro dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory activity, with compounds 3, 4, 28, 29, and 40 exhibiting DPP-IV inhibitory effects with IC50 values ranging from 54.2 to 228.9 μM. Compounds 1, 3 and 4 also showed potent activity toward the inhibition of the growth of human cancer cells and 1 can induce apoptosis in Hey and A-549 cells.

Abstract
We report a Rh-catalyzed method for the C-5 selective C-H iodination of naphthoquinones and show that complementary C-2 selective processes can be achieved under related conditions. C-C bond forming derivatizations of the C-5 iodinated products provide a gateway to previously inaccessible A-ring analogues. The present study encompasses the first catalytic directed ortho-functionalizations of simple (non-bias) naphthoquinones. The strategic considerations outlined here are likely to be applicable to C-H functionalizations of other weakly coordinating and/or redox sensitive substrates.

Abstract
Plant products may be alternative sources of mosquito larval control agents, since they constitute a rich source of bioactive compounds that are biodegradable into nontoxic products. It has been reported that quinones and derivatives present toxic activity against mosquito larvae Aedes aegypti. Therefore, these facts led us to investigate the larvicidal potential of six structurally related para-benzoquinones against A. aegypti L. (Culicidae) larvae, the vector of dengue fever. All the para-benzoquinones were found to have larvicidal effect. The unsubstituted para-benzoquinone was the compound that exhibited the lowest potency, while 2-isopropyl-para-benzoquinone was the most bioactive. In general, the presence of alkyl groups results in more potent compounds. In addition, the number, position, and size of these groups modulate the potency of the compounds. The experimental results showed that by appropriate structural modification of para-benzoquinones, it may be possible to develop novel insecticidal compounds with potential use to control A. aegypti population.

Abstract
The methanol extract of stems of Catalpa ovata G Don exhibits potent in vivo antifungal activity against Magnaporthe grisea (Hebert) Barr (rice blast) on rice plants, Botrytis cinerea Pers ex Fr (tomato grey mould) and Phytophthora infestans (Mont) de Bary (tomato late blight) on tomato plants, Puccinia recondita Rob ex Desm (wheat leaf rust) on wheat plants and Blumeria graminis (DC) Speer f. sp. hordei Marchal (barley powdery mildew) on barley plants. An antifungal substance was isolated and identified as dehydro-alpha-lapachone from mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data. It completely inhibited the mycelial growth of B. cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum Simmonds, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Simmonds, M. grisea and Pythium ultimum Trow over a range of 0.4-33.3 mg litre(-1). It also controlled the development of rice blast, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust, barley powdery mildew and red pepper anthracnose (Colletotrichum coccodes (Wallr) S Hughes). The chemical was particularly effective in suppressing red pepper anthracnose by 95% at a concentration of 125 mg litre(-1).
