Abstract
NEW FINDINGS What is the central question of this study? The aim of present study was to record and analyse the myoelectrical activity in the female pig reproductive tract (uterus and oviduct) during early pregnancy. What is the main finding and its importance? Understanding the contractile activity of the uterus and oviducts is indispensable for understanding the physiological mechanisms as well as all irregularities associated with the period of conception and early pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to record the myoelectrical activity of the reproductive tract in sows during the oestrous phase and early pregnancy via a telemetry recording system. In a total of eight non-pregnant pigs, the bioelectrical activity was recorded through three silicone electrodes sutured on the oviduct (isthmus and ampulla) and the uterine horn. Blood samples were collected to monitor the concentrations of progesterone (P4) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The oestrous cycle was synchronized with equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), and the animals were subjected to artificial insemination. Analysis of the EMG activity of the oviduct and uterus in the oestrous phase and in early stages of pregnancy suggests explicitly that telemetry could enable in vivo assessment of myoelectrical activity of parts of the reproductive system in sows. Off-line analysis of the duration of EMG activity bursts in the uterus, isthmus and ampulla were significantly higher during early pregnancy (phases II and III) than in the oestrous phase. The EMG signals demonstrated low mean amplitudes of activity in the oviduct and uterus during early pregnancy (phases I-III). Significant differences between the root mean square signals were observed in the isthmus and ampulla both during oestrus and in early pregnancy (phase I; P < 0.01). During the oestrous phase, the P4 concentration was estimated at <1 ng ml-1 , whereas the LH concentration was >4 ng ml-1 . In contrast, during early pregnancy, the P4 and LH concentrations were estimated at >4 and <1 ng ml-1 , respectively.

Abstract
It is widely accepted that uterine contraction is initiated by spontaneous generation of electrical activity at a cellular level in the form of action potentials. Such action potential events, when they involve many myometrial cells and occur in immediate succession, are described by their amplitude and duration. In an effort to improve clinical management of uterine contractions, research has focused on determination of the properties of the reproductive tract's electrical activity under hormonal stimulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the myoelectric activity (amplitude and duration) of the oviduct and the uterus in relation to plasma concentration of LH, estradiol (E2), and progesterone (P4) during spontaneous and induced estrus in gilts. The course of the experiment was divided into eight periods defined by hormone concentrations (LH, P4, and E2) and time intervals before and after the start of the LH surge. Myoelectric signals were recorded, and the hormone levels were measured during proestrus and estrus in natural and hormone-induced estrus cycle. During the natural estrus, the LH surge was longer than after hormonal stimulation (28 vs. 20 hours) and suggested an inverse relationship between the LH concentration and the duration of myoelectric activity (SR = -0.68). Analyses of the records of the amplitudes and durations of the electromyography activity in uterine horns and oviducts showed significant differences between spontaneous and induced estrus (P < 0.05). During induced estrus, the LH surge began earlier (T1 vs. T2) and increased more (7.46 vs. 6.50 ng/mL) than during spontaneous estrus. This observation suggests a direct relationship between the LH concentration and the amplitude of the myoelectric activity (Spearman rank correlation = 0.71). The significantly higher duration and amplitude of the activity in the isthmus of the oviduct and the uterus during induced estrus shortly after the onset of standing heat (4-8 hours after the LH surge) suggested more favorable conditions for effective artificial insemination.

Abstract
Fertilization and early embryo development relies on a complex interplay between the Fallopian tube and the gametes before and after fertilization. Thereby the oviduct, as a dynamic reproductive organ, enables reception, transport and maturation of male and female gametes, their fusion, and supports early embryo development. This paper reviews current knowledge regarding physiological processes behind the transport of boar spermatozoa, their storage in and release from the functional sperm reservoir (SR), and of the interactions that newly ovulated oocytes play within the tube during their transport to the site of fertilization. Experimental evidence of an ovarian control on sperm release from the SR is highlighted. Furthermore, the impact of oviductal secretion on sperm capacitation, oocyte maturation, fertilization and early embryo development is stressed.

Abstract
The present study was performed to investigate the number of either the spermatozoa or the embryos in the reproductive tracts of sows after unilateral, deep, intra uterine insemination (DIUI). Two experiments were conducted, 10 sows were used in experiment I and eight sows were used in experiment II. Transrectal ultrasonography was used to examine the time when ovulation took place in relation to oestrus behaviour. The sows were inseminated with a single dose of diluted fresh semen 6-8 h prior to expected ovulation, during the second oestrus after weaning. In experimental I, five sows were inseminated by a conventional artificial insemination (AI) technique using 100 ml of diluted fresh semen, containing 3000 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa and five sows were inseminated by the DIUI technique with 5 ml of diluted fresh semen, containing 150 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa. The sows were anesthetized and ovario-hysterectomized approximately 24 h after insemination. The oviducts and the uterine horns on each side of the reproductive tracts were divided into seven segments, namely ampulla, cranial isthmus, caudal isthmus, utero-tubal junction (UTJ), cranial uterine horn, middle uterine horn and caudal uterine horn. Each segment of the reproductive tracts was flushed with Beltsville thawing solution (BTS) through the lumen. The total number of spermatozoa in the flushing from each segment were determined. In experimental II, eight sows were inseminated by the DIUI technique using 5.0 ml diluted fresh semen containing 150 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa. The sows were anesthetized 61.1 +/- 12 h after insemination (48-72 h) and the embryos were flushed from the oviduct through the proximal part of the uterine horn. It was revealed that, in experimental I, the spermatozoa were recovered from both sides of the reproductive tract in the AI-group, and from unilateral side of the reproductive tract in the DIUI-group (three sows from the left and two sows from the right sides). The number of spermatozoa recovered from the reproductive tracts was higher in the AI- than the DIUI-group (p < 0.001). In experiment II, fertilization occurred in five of eight sows (62.5%) after DIUI. The number of ova that ovulated were 16.4 +/- 2.6 per sow and the embryos numbering 11.4 +/- 2.3 per sow were recovered from both sides of the reproductive tract. In conclusion, the spermatozoa given by DIUI could be recovered from only one side of the reproductive tract of sows at approximately 24 h after DIUI via the flushing technique. However, embryos were found in both sides of the oviducts and the proximal part of the uterine horns 48-72 h after insemination, indicating that the fertilization occurred in both sides of the oviducts.

Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the effects of ACTH injections on the early development of embryos and their transportation to the uterus. Fifteen sows were monitored for ovulation using transrectal ultrasonography during the first two oestrous periods after weaning. The sows were randomly divided into a control group (C group, n = 8) and an ACTH-treated group (ACTH group, n = 7), and were all surgically fitted with intra-jugular catheters. From the onset of the second standing oestrus after weaning, the sows were injected (NaCl/synthetic ACTH) every 4 h. Blood samples were collected immediately before and 45 min after each injection. All sows were inseminated once 10-33 h before ovulation in their second oestrus after weaning. At 48 (n = 4) or 60 (n = 11) h after ovulation during their second oestrus, the sows were killed and the embryos retrieved from the oviduct and uterus. The embryos were counted and compared with the number of corpora lutea, cleavage rate was noted and, finally, the embryos were prepared for confocal laser scanning microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. There was no difference between the groups regarding cleavage rate, the cytoskeleton, or the number of active nucleoli. However, the ACTH group had significantly (p < 0.05) fewer ova/embryos retrieved (51%) than the C group (81%), and there was a tendency towards faster transportation to the uterus in the ACTH group, possibly because of high progesterone concentrations during treatment. To conclude, administration of ACTH every 4 h from onset of oestrus to 48 h caused significant loss of oocytes or embryos, and possibly faster transportation through the oviduct.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate how ovulation rate and survival rate through pregnancy had been affected by more than 110 generations of upwards selection on litter size in mice. The mean number of pups born alive was 22 in the high line (selected line) and 11 in the control line (an increase in 2.6 standard deviations). Selection on litter size increased ovulation rate by 4.6 standard deviations, and it is suggested that selection also increased embryonic mortality in late pregnancy. Embryo survival from ovulation until birth was 66% in the selected line and 69% in the control line, and the observed loss in litter size from day 16 of pregnancy until birth was possibly higher in the high line compared with the control line. Selection for higher litter size has significantly increased body weight in both males and females, as the mean weight at mating for the females was 46 g in the high line and 33 g in the control line respectively.
