Abstract
Handling and husbandry of male small ruminants after sexual maturity often become difficult. Castration is currently the most reliable solution to this problem. Medicinal procedures for temporary inhibition of the gonad function could provide an alternative. Following a short overview of surgical castration, the current knowledge on the application of vaccines against gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and GnRH agonist in rams and billy goats is presented in a literature overview. In rams, GnRH vaccination has been used successfully for temporary suppression of the reproduction function, regardless of an animal's age at the time of therapy initiation. Fewer investigations are available for the billy goat. A complete suppression of spermatogenesis was not achieved in all cases. Currently, treatment with GnRH agonists does not represent a relible method for the suppression of gonad function.

Abstract
Immunocastration using gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-based vaccines has been investigated in rams to reduce aggressive and sexual behaviour and to control meat quality. Despite considerable efforts, a practical GnRH vaccine has yet to be developed for rams. In the present study, a A GnRH-lipopeptide vaccine (GnRH-LP) including two copies of GnRH, 2-amino-d,l-hexadecanoic acid (C16), and a unique T helper epitope, was examined in rams. Rams received a primary and secondary vaccination of GnRH-LP without additional adjuvant (Group 1) or with the adjuvant AdjuVac™ (Group 2). In both Group 1 and 2 anti-GnRH antibody titres increased after secondary vaccination, however, the antibody titres were higher (p<0.01) for rams in Group 2. The latter rams showed a marked decrease in testicular size. The marked and sustained reduction in testicular size in rams treated with GnRH-LP+AdjuVac™ provides the basis for an effective immunocastration vaccine in rams.

Abstract
The objective was to determine effects of active immunization against GnRH on reproductive function in Tibetan rams. Peripubertal Tibetan rams (n = 30) were randomly and equally allocated into three groups: control (no treatment); surgically castrated; or immunized against 100-μg d-Lys6-GnRH-tandem-dimer peptide conjugated to ovalbumin in Specol adjuvant at 24 weeks of age (with a booster 8 weeks later). Blood samples (for antibody titers and hormone concentrations) were collected at 4-week intervals until rams were killed (40 weeks). Immunization triggered a good antibody response in all immunized rams (P < 0.01). Compared with intact controls, anti-GnRH immunization reduced (P < 0.01) serum concentrations of testosterone, inhibin A, LH, and FSH, and it induced testicular atrophy (suppression of spermatogenesis). Androstenone concentrations in fat tissues of GnRH-immunized rams were also rendered nondetectable (P < 0.001). Furthermore, mRNA expressions of GnRH receptor, LH-β, and FSH-β in the pituitary and of LH receptor, FSH receptor, and inhibin α and βA subunits in the testes were decreased in immunized rams compared with intact controls (P < 0.05). This was apparently the first report that active immunization against GnRH-tandem-dimer-ovalbumin conjugate in Specol adjuvant was an effective alternative to surgical castration for Tibetan rams under practical Tibetan plateau conditions.

Abstract
This experiment was designed to study the relationship between growth rate and sexual development in Najdi ram lambs. Forty-five Najdi ram lambs were used in nine age groups (1-9th month age), keeping 5 lambs in each group. Results show that mean testis size and scrotal circumference increased at a constant rate, reaching a maximum value of 392.00 ± 2.00 g and 25.00 ± 0.32 cm respectively, at the age of 9 months. A similar trend of growth was observed for the mean body weight, reaching a maximum value of 40.2 ± 0.20 kg at the age of 9 months. There was a positive correlation between the increasing rates of body weight and size of the testis. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in testis size, scrotal circumference and body weight of lambs between all ages (1-9 months). The histological section of testis showed that a small number of mature sperms appeared in the eighth month of age and their numbers increased in the ninth month. In conclusion, the current findings indicated that puberty in Najdi rams occurs between the 8th and 9th months of age.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine, Improvac (Pfizer Ltd.), on the levels of GnRH antibodies, testosterone, estrone sulphate (E1S) and androstenone, as well as skatole and indole in male pigs. Additionally, the long-term effect of immunocastration on social and sexual behaviour was studied. Male pigs were assigned to two treatment groups: a treatment group given two doses of Improvac (n=12) and a control group of entire male pigs (n=12). The pigs were kept either 16 or 22 weeks after vaccination. Blood samples were collected five or six times; prior to both first and second vaccination, then three or four times during the 16 or 22 week period after second vaccination. Immunocastration significantly reduced levels of testosterone and E1S in plasma, and levels of androstenone in fat (P<0.001 for all). Skatole and indole levels in plasma and fat were also lower in immunocastrated pigs than in entire male pigs. These effects lasted up to 22 weeks after the second vaccination. Testis weight and bulbourethral gland length were lower in immunocastrated pigs at slaughter and these pigs showed less social, manipulating and aggressive behaviour than entire male pigs. The immunocastrated pigs remained sexually inactive throughout the study. Our study represents a further step in the evaluation of the effectiveness of Improvac as an alternative to surgical castration of entire male pigs. It shows that Improvac may have an extended effect compared with that currently implied by the directions for use.
