Nodular fasciitis involving the palm

Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a self-limiting fibrous neoplasm that can be mistaken for a soft tissue sarcoma. It is characterised by rapid growth, slight pain and local tenderness. Although it is frequently found in the forearm, a lesion distal to the wrist is quite rare. We present two unusual cases of NF involving the palm, supported by detecting ubiquitin specific protease 6 gene rearrangement. The first patient had non-intraneural NF presenting as peripheral neuropathy affecting the digital nerve while the second patient suffered from painless, non-tender NF in the palm, which had not regressed spontaneously during the five months prior to surgery.

Nodular fasciitis of the hand: excision preserving 'vital' structures

Nodular fasciitis is an extremely rare benign fibrous tumour of the hand. Although benign, the tumour is frequently adherent to tendons/nerves and joints of the hand. However, the tumour may spontaneously regress and does not tend to recur following excision with histologically positive margins. For the last 20 years, the author has adopted a specific management approach for these and other benign fibrous tumours of the hand. Following the clinical/radiological diagnosis, tumour excision is done preserving 'vital' structures within the hand. The diagnosis is confirmed histologically and by immune stains, and the patient is then followed up for local recurrence. Over a 20-year period, the author has treated four cases of nodular fasciitis of the hand using this management approach. Despite the positive margins in all cases, there were no recurrences at a minimum follow-up interval of 3 years.

Nodular fasciitis of the zygoma: A case report

Nodular fasciitis (NF), a benign proliferation of fibroblasts, commonly presents as a solitary, well-circumscribed, rapidly growing soft tissue mass. It is most commonly located in the upper extremities, particularly on the volar aspect of the elbow, and on the chest and trunk. In adults, NF is rarely found in the head and neck region. Although benign, it can often be confused with a more malignant process and therefore must be properly diagnosed histologically. The cause of NF is unknown but an association with trauma may be present. Treatment is most commonly by local surgical excision, and recurrence is rare. A case of NF over the zygoma in a 60-year-old man not associated with trauma is presented.

Nodular fasciitis of the hand in a young athlete. A case report

Nodular fasciitis is a rapidly growing mass, with high cellularity and mitotic activity, that can be both clinically and histologically misdiagnosed as a soft tissue sarcoma. Nodular fasciitis of the hand is an extremely rare condition. We report a 17-year-old male hand-ball player with nodular fasciitis in the dominant hand. The patient presented with a rapidly growing mass in his right hand and no history of major trauma. On physical examination, a painful mass measuring 2 cm in diameter was observed in the first web space. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a subcutaneous mass with isointensity on T1-weighted images and inhomogeneous high intensity on T2-weighted images. The lesion was inhomogeneously enhanced after intravenous administration of gadolinium. Moreover, thallium-201 scintigraphy showed high uptake at the early phase and no wash-out at the delayed phase. We performed an excisional biopsy. The mass was present subcutaneously and adhered to the interosseous muscle fascia. Although a pathological examination by frozen section during surgery showed a low-grade spindle cell sarcoma, the final histological diagnosis was nodular fasciitis. There was no evidence of local recurrence at the recent follow-up 2 years after the operation. We speculate that repeated small injuries as a result of sports activities played an important causative role in the nodular fasciitis.

Nodular Fasciitis of the Nasal Cavity: A Case Report

Nodular fasciitis is an uncommon tumor-like fibroblastic proliferation of the head and neck that is difficult to differentiate from its more malignant counterparts. Despite modern advances, making this distinction is challenging because the clinical presentation is nonspecific and the histologic and radiologic features are variable. Once nodular fasciitis is diagnosed, the primary treatment is conservative resection and observation. We describe a case of nodular fasciitis of the nasal cavity in a 43-year-old woman. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the second reported case of nodular fasciitis arising in the nasal cavity, and the first such case in an adult.
