Optimization of view ordering for motion artifact suppression

A Platform Integrating Acquisition, Reconstruction, Visualization, and Manipulator Control Modules for MRI-Guided Interventions

This work presents a platform that integrates a customized MRI data acquisition scheme with reconstruction and three-dimensional (3D) visualization modules along with a module for controlling an MRI-compatible robotic device to facilitate the performance of robot-assisted, MRI-guided interventional procedures. Using dynamically-acquired MRI data, the computational framework of the platform generates and updates a 3D model representing the area of the procedure (AoP). To image structures of interest in the AoP that do not reside inside the same or parallel slices, the MRI acquisition scheme was modified to collect a multi-slice set of intraoblique to each other slices; which are termed composing slices. Moreover, this approach interleaves the collection of the composing slices so the same k-space segments of all slices are collected during similar time instances. This time matching of the k-space segments results in spatial matching of the imaged objects in the individual composing slices. The composing slices were used to generate and update the 3D model of the AoP. The MRI acquisition scheme was evaluated with computer simulations and experimental studies. Computer simulations demonstrated that k-space segmentation and time-matched interleaved acquisition of these segments provide spatial matching of the structures imaged with composing slices. Experimental studies used the platform to image the maneuvering of an MRI-compatible manipulator that carried tubing filled with MRI contrast agent. In vivo experimental studies to image the abdomen and contrast enhanced heart on free-breathing subjects without cardiac triggering demonstrated spatial matching of imaged anatomies in the composing planes. The described interventional MRI framework could assist in performing real-time MRI-guided interventions.

Regularly incremented phase encoding - MR fingerprinting (RIPE-MRF) for enhanced motion artifact suppression in preclinical cartesian MR fingerprinting

PURPOSE

The regularly incremented phase encoding-magnetic resonance fingerprinting (RIPE-MRF) method is introduced to limit the sensitivity of preclinical MRF assessments to pulsatile and respiratory motion artifacts.

METHODS

As compared to previously reported standard Cartesian-MRF methods (SC-MRF), the proposed RIPE-MRF method uses a modified Cartesian trajectory that varies the acquired phase-encoding line within each dynamic MRF dataset. Phantoms and mice were scanned without gating or triggering on a 7T preclinical MRI scanner using the RIPE-MRF and SC-MRF methods. In vitro phantom longitudinal relaxation time (T₁ ) and transverse relaxation time (T₂ ) measurements, as well as in vivo liver assessments of artifact-to-noise ratio (ANR) and MRF-based T₁ and T₂ mean and standard deviation, were compared between the two methods (n = 5).

RESULTS

RIPE-MRF showed significant ANR reductions in regions of pulsatility (P < 0.005) and respiratory motion (P < 0.0005). RIPE-MRF also exhibited improved precision in T₁ and T₂ measurements in comparison to the SC-MRF method (P <  0.05). The RIPE-MRF and SC-MRF methods displayed similar mean T₁ and T₂ estimates (difference in mean values < 10%).

CONCLUSION

These results show that the RIPE-MRF method can provide effective motion artifact suppression with minimal impact on T₁ and T₂ accuracy for in vivo small animal MRI studies. Magn Reson Med 79:2176-2182, 2018. © 2017 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

Sparse and optimal acquisition design for diffusion MRI and beyond

PURPOSE

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in combination with functional MRI promises a whole new vista for scientists to investigate noninvasively the structural and functional connectivity of the human brain-the human connectome, which had heretofore been out of reach. As with other imaging modalities, diffusion MRI data are inherently noisy and its acquisition time-consuming. Further, a faithful representation of the human connectome that can serve as a predictive model requires a robust and accurate data-analytic pipeline. The focus of this paper is on one of the key segments of this pipeline-in particular, the development of a sparse and optimal acquisition (SOA) design for diffusion MRI multiple-shell acquisition and beyond.

METHODS

The authors propose a novel optimality criterion for sparse multiple-shell acquisition and quasimultiple-shell designs in diffusion MRI and a novel and effective semistochastic and moderately greedy combinatorial search strategy with simulated annealing to locate the optimum design or configuration. The goal of the optimality criteria is threefold: first, to maximize uniformity of the diffusion measurements in each shell, which is equivalent to maximal incoherence in angular measurements; second, to maximize coverage of the diffusion measurements around each radial line to achieve maximal incoherence in radial measurements for multiple-shell acquisition; and finally, to ensure maximum uniformity of diffusion measurement directions in the limiting case when all the shells are coincidental as in the case of a single-shell acquisition. The approach taken in evaluating the stability of various acquisition designs is based on the condition number and the A-optimal measure of the design matrix.

RESULTS

Even though the number of distinct configurations for a given set of diffusion gradient directions is very large in general-e.g., in the order of 10(232) for a set of 144 diffusion gradient directions, the proposed search strategy was found to be effective in finding the optimum configuration. It was found that the square design is the most robust (i.e., with stable condition numbers and A-optimal measures under varying experimental conditions) among many other possible designs of the same sample size. Under the same performance evaluation, the square design was found to be more robust than the widely used sampling schemes similar to that of 3D radial MRI and of diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI).

CONCLUSIONS

A novel optimality criterion for sparse multiple-shell acquisition and quasimultiple-shell designs in diffusion MRI and an effective search strategy for finding the best configuration have been developed. The results are very promising, interesting, and practical for diffusion MRI acquisitions.

A modified view ordering for artifact reduction in MRI

Fast spin echo (FSE) is a means of rapidly acquiring k-space data in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Unfortunately, images obtained using FSE often contain artifacts. These are caused primarily by patient motion and transversal magnetisation decay, the latter being characterised by the time constant T2. This paper presents a study of the effect of data acquisition order on the severity of these effects.

Motion artifact suppression in breath hold 3D contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography using ECG ordering

Vascular pulsation and cardiac motion compromise image quality in contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA) in the thorax, resulting in blurring and ghosting artifacts. The use of ECG gating has been proposed in the past to mitigate these artifacts but previous methods suffered from increased scanner time because only a fraction of the cardiac cycle was used for image acquisition and from loss of the study when gating failed. We propose a robust ECG ordering of k-space for breath hold CE-MRA that acquires the central part of k-space in a motion-free portion of diastole and fills in from the periphery of k-space at all other times. To make maximal use of the contrast enhancement, data is acquired continuously even when the ECG signal is lost. The proposed sequence is shown to allow thoracic and pulmonary MRA with a higher resolution when compared to the conventional gated sequence.

Parallel Imaging in MR Angiography

The recently developed techniques of parallel imaging with phased array coils are rapidly becoming accepted for magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) applications. This article reviews the various current parallel imaging techniques and their application to MRA. The increased scan efficiency provided by parallel imaging allows increased temporal or spatial resolution, and reduction of artifacts in contrast-enhanced MRA (CE-MRA). Increased temporal resolution in CE-MRA can be used to reduce the need for bolus timing and to provide hemodynamic information helpful for diagnosis. In addition, increased spatial resolution (or volume coverage) can be acquired in a breathhold (eg, in renal CE-MRA), or in otherwise limited clinically acceptable scan durations. The increased scan efficiency provided by parallel imaging has been successfully applied to CE-MRA as well as other MRA techniques such as inflow and phase contrast imaging. The large signal-to-noise ratio available in many MRA techniques lends these acquisitions to increased scan efficiency through parallel imaging.

Band artifacts due to bulk motion

Band artifacts due to bulk motion were investigated in images acquired with fast gradient echo sequences. A simple analytical calculation shows that the width of the artifacts has a square-root dependence on the velocity of the imaged object, the time taken to acquire each line of k-space and the field of view in the phase-encoding direction. The theory furthermore predicts that the artifact width can be reduced using parallel imaging by a factor equal to the square root of the acceleration parameter. The analysis and results are presented for motion in the phase- and frequency-encoding directions and comparisons are made between sequential and centric ordering. The theory is validated in phantom experiments, in which bulk motion is simulated in a controlled and reproducible manner by rocking the scan table back and forth along the bore axis. Preliminary cardiac studies in healthy human volunteers show that dark bands may be observed in the endocardium in images acquired with nonsegmented fast gradient echo sequences. The fact that the position of the bands changes with the phase-encoding direction suggests that they may be artifacts due to motion of the heart walls during the image acquisition period.
