Determination of the minor component bromhexine in cotrimoxazole-containing tablets by absorption spectrophotometry and partial least-squares (PLS-1) multivariate calibration

Electronic waste analysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF): Critical evaluation of data fusion for the determination of Al, Cu and Fe

BACKGROUND

Electronic waste (e-waste) proliferation and its implications underscore the imperative for advanced analytical methods to mitigate its environmental impact. It is estimated that e-waste production stands at a staggering 20-50 million tons yearly, of which merely 20-25% undergo formal recycling. The e-waste samples evaluated contain computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

RESULTS

Forty-one samples were processed, involving the disassembly and separation of components. Subsequently, two analytical techniques, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), were applied to quantify aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) in the e-waste samples. The samples were then analyzed after acid mineralization with 50% v v-1 aqua regia in a digester block and finally by ICP OES. A solid residue composed of Si and Ti was observed after the digestion of the samples. Multivariate calibration strategies such as partial least-squares regression (PLS), principal component regression (PCR), maximum likelihood principal component regression (MLPCR), and error covariance penalized regression (ECPR) were used for calibration. Finally, the figures of merit were calculated to verify the most suitable models. The results revealed robust models with notable sensitivity, varying from 8.98 to 35.04 Signal (a.u.)(% w w-1) -1, low Limits of Detection (LoD) within the range of 0.001-0.2 % w w-1, and remarkable relative errors ranging from 2% to 33%, particularly for Cu and Fe.

SIGNIFICANCE

Notably, the models for Al faced inherent challenges, thus highlighting the complexities associated with its quantification in e-waste samples. In conclusion, this research represents an important step toward a more sustainable and efficient future for electronic waste recycling, signifying its relevance to global environmental welfare and resource conservation.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometric methods for the determination of the minor component presented in fixed-dose pharmaceutical combinations through the last two decades (2000–2020)

Recently, the utilization of the ultraviolet spectrophotometric methods has become vital for the analytical studies for the routine analysis of different fixed-dose combination products either in the presence of a minor component in their combination or not. This article reviewed several published methods to those that have been applied to quantify some pharmaceutical combinations containing minor components through the last two decades.

Conclusion

The applied spectrophotometric methods are labor, time-saving, and also considered a cheap substitute for the overpriced high-performance liquid chromatographic technique.

Extractive determination of ephedrine hydrochloride and bromhexine hydrochloride in pure solutions, pharmaceutical dosage form and urine samples

Simple, rapid, sensitive, precise and accurate spectrophotometeric methods for the determination of ephedrine hydrochloride (E-HCl) and bromhexine hydrochloride (Br-HCl) in bulk samples, dosage form and in spiked urine samples were investigated. The methods are based on the formation of a yellow colored ion-associates due to the interaction between the examined drugs with picric acid (PA), chlorophyllin coppered trisodium salt (CLPH), alizarin red (AR) and ammonium reineckate (Rk) reagents. A buffer solution had been used and the extraction was carried out using organic solvent, the ion associates exhibit absorption maxima at 410, 410, 430 and 530 nm of (Br-HCl)with PA, CLPH, AR and Rk respectively; 410, 410, 435 and 530 of (E-HCl) with PA, CLPH, AR and Rk respectively. (E-HCl) and (Br-HCl) could be determined up to 13, 121, 120 and 160; 25, 200, 92 and 206 μg mL(-1), using PA, CLPH, AR and Rk respectively. The optimum reaction conditions for quantitative analysis were investigated. In addition, the molar absorptivity, Sandell sensitivity were determined for the investigated drug. The correlation coefficient was ≥0.995 (n=6) with a relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤1.15 for five selected concentrations of the reagents. Therefore the concentration of Br-HCl and E-HCl drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations and spiked urine samples had been determined successfully.

Development and validation of chemometrics-assisted spectrophotometric and liquid chromatographic methods for the simultaneous determination of two multicomponent mixtures containing bronchodilator drugs

Three methods are developed for the determination of two multicomponent mixtures containing guaiphenesine (GU) with salbutamol sulfate (SL), methylparaben (MP) and propylparaben (PP) [mixture 1]; and acephylline piperazine (AC) with bromhexine hydrochloride (BX), methylparaben (MP) and propylparaben (PP) [mixture 2]. The resolution of the two multicomponent mixtures has been accomplished by using numerical spectrophotometric methods such as partial least squares (PLS-1) and principal component regression (PCR) applied to UV absorption spectra of the two mixtures. In addition HPLC method was developed using a RP 18 column at ambient temperature with mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-0.05 M potassium dihydrogen phosphate, pH 4.3 (60:40, v/v), with UV detection at 243 nm for mixture 1, and mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-0.05 M potassium dihydrogen phosphate, pH 3 (50:50, v/v), with UV detection at 245 nm for mixture 2. The methods were validated in terms of accuracy, specificity, precision and linearity in the range of 20-60 microg ml(-1) for GU, 1-3 microg ml(-1) for SL, 20-80 microg ml(-1) for AC, 0.2-1.8 microgml(-1) for PP and 1-5 microg ml(-1) for BX and MP. The proposed methods were successfully applied for the determination of the two multicomponent combinations in laboratory prepared mixtures and commercial syrups.

Simultaneous determination of dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine and phenylephrine in expectorant and decongestant syrups by capillary electrophoresis

The separation of basic nitrogenous compounds commonly used as active ingredients in cold medicine formulations by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography and capillary zone electrophoresis with direct absorptiometric detection was investigated. The type and composition of the background electrolyte (BGE) were investigated with respect to separation selectivity and BGE stability. BGE of 10 mM sodium dihydrogenphosphate-sodium tetraborate buffer containing 10 mM SDS and 10% acetonitrile, pH 9.0 was found to be optimal. Dextromethorphan hydrobhromide, diphenhydramine hydrochloride and phenylephrine hydrochloride were baseline-separated in less than 11 min, giving separation efficiencies of up to 494,000 theoretical plates, reproducibility of corrected peaks areas below 3% relative standard deviation and concentration detection limits from 2.5 to 5.5 microg ml(-1). Detection was performed at 196 and 214 nm.
