Abstract
Green, simple, accurate and robust univariate and chemometrics assisted UV spectrophotometric approaches have been adopted and validated for concurrent quantification of fluocinolone acetonide (FLU), ciprofloxacin HCl (CIP) together with ciprofloxacin impurity-A (CIP imp-A) in their ternary mixture. Double-divisor ratio spectra derivative (DDRD) method has been used for determination of FLU. On the other hand, the first (D1) and second (D2) derivative approaches have been applied for the quantification of CIP and CIP imp-A, respectively. For the ratio difference (RD), derivative ratio (DR), and mean centering of ratio spectra (MC) methods, CIP and its impurity A have been simultaneously determined. The acquired calibration plots were linear over the concentration range of 0.6-20.0 μg/mL, 1.0-40.0 μg/mL and 1.0-40.0 μg/mL for fluocinolone acetonide, ciprofloxacin HCl, and ciprofloxacin impurity-A, respectively. The chemometrics methods namely; partial least squares (PLS) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were used for the concurrent determination of the three adopted components via using twenty-five mixtures as calibration set and fifteen mixtures as validation one. The investigated approaches were validated in accordance with International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines, and statistically compared with the official ones. The proposed methods were acceptably applied to the examination of FLU and CIP in their pure powders and pharmaceutical ear drops.

Abstract
Two sensitive, selective and precise chromatographic methods have been established for concomitant quantification of ciprofloxacin HCl (CIP), fluocinolone acetonide (FLU) along with ciprofloxacin impurity A (CIP-imp A). The first method was thin-layer chromatography (TLC-densitometry) where separation was accomplished using TLC silica plates 60 G.F254 as a stationary phase and chloroform-methanol-33%ammonia (4.6:4.4:1, by volume) as a developing system. The obtained plates were scanned at 260 nm over concentration ranges of 1.0-40.0, 0.6-20.0 and 1.0-40.0 μg band-1 for CIP, FLU and CIP-imp A, respectively. The second method was based on high-performance liquid chromatography using a Zorbax ODS column (5 μm, 150 × 4.6 mm i.d.) where adequate separation was achieved through a mobile phase composed of phosphate buffer pH 3.6-acetonitrile (45:55, v/v) at flow rate 1.0 mL min-1 with ultraviolet detection at 254 nm. Linear regressions were obtained in the range of 1.0-40.0 μg mL-1 for CIP, 0.6-20.0 μg mL-1 for FLU and 1.0-40.0 μg mL-1 for CIP-imp A. The suggested methods were validated in compliance with the International Conference on Harmonization guidelines and were successfully applied for determination of CIP and FLU in bulk powder and newly marketed otic solution.

Abstract
In this study, we developed tamarind gum (TG) and rice bran oil (RBO)-based emulgels. The control formulation (TR0), did not contain RBO. The emulgels were named as TR1, TR2, TR3, and TR4, which contained 5% (w/w), 10% (w/w), 15% (w/w), and 20% (w/w/) of RBO, respectively. The microscopic studies showed that the emulgels were biphasic in nature. FTIR spectroscopy revealed the reduction in the hydrogen bonding with an increase in the RBO content. Impedance profiles suggested that the resistive component of the emulgels was increased as the RBO content was increased. The thermal analysis suggested that the addition of RBO reduced the water holding capacity of the emulgels. Stress relaxation studies revealed that the fluidic component was considerably higher in TG/RBO-based emulgels as compared to TR0. In vitro release study of the model drug (ciprofloxacin HCl; a hydrochloride salt of ciprofloxacin) suggested a significantly lower release from the emulgel matrices (TR1-TR4) in comparison to TR0. However, ex vivo corneal permeation of the drug increased with an increase in the RBO content. Since the emulgels were able to improve the corneal permeation of the model drug, the emulgels can be explored to deliver drugs to the internal structures of the eye.

Abstract
This work represents a comparative study of different approaches of manipulating ratio spectra, applied on a binary mixture of ciprofloxacin HCl and dexamethasone sodium phosphate co-formulated as ear drops. The proposed new spectrophotometric methods are: ratio difference spectrophotometric method (RDSM), amplitude center method (ACM), first derivative of the ratio spectra (1DD) and mean centering of ratio spectra (MCR). The proposed methods were checked using laboratory-prepared mixtures and were successfully applied for the analysis of pharmaceutical formulation containing the cited drugs. The proposed methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines. A comparative study was conducted between those methods regarding simplicity, limitations and sensitivity. The obtained results were statistically compared with those obtained from the reported HPLC method, showing no significant difference with respect to accuracy and precision.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive sensor has been developed for the electrochemical determination of ciprofloxacin (CF). The proposed sensor was designed by chitosan-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle incorporated in the carbon paste electrode (CPE), which provides remarkably improved sensitivity for the electrochemical determination of CF. The proposed sensor was characterized with scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimum conditions, the sensor provides two linear differential pulse voltammetry responses in the range of 0.05–6 μmol/L and 6–75 μmol/L for CF with a detection limit of 0.01 μmol/L. The proposed sensor exhibited high sensitivity and good selectivity and was successfully applied for CF determination in serum and urine samples.

Abstract
Four rapid, simple, accurate and precise spectrophotometric methods were used for the determination of ciprofloxacin in the presence of its acidic degradation product. The methods under study are ratio derivative, ratio difference, mean centering and dual wavelength. All the methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines and the obtained accuracy, precision and repeatability were found to be within the acceptable limits. The selectivity of the proposed methods was tested using laboratory prepared mixtures and assessed by applying the standard addition technique. So, they can be used for the routine analysis of ciprofloxacin in quality-control laboratories.

Abstract
New accurate, sensitive and selective spectrophotometric and chemometric methods were developed and subsequently validated for determination of Imipenem (IMP), ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIPRO), dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DEX), paracetamol (PAR) and cilastatin sodium (CIL) in human urine. These methods include a new derivative ratio method, namely extended derivative ratio (EDR), principal component regression (PCR) and partial least-squares (PLS) methods. A novel EDR method was developed for the determination of these drugs, where each component in the mixture was determined by using a mixture of the other four components as divisor. Peak amplitudes were recorded at 293.0 nm, 284.0 nm, 276.0 nm, 257.0 nm and 221.0 nm within linear concentration ranges 3.00-45.00, 1.00-15.00, 4.00-40.00, 1.50-25.00 and 4.00-50.00 μg mL(-1) for IMP, CIPRO, DEX, PAR and CIL, respectively. PCR and PLS-2 models were established for simultaneous determination of the studied drugs in the range of 3.00-15.00, 1.00-13.00, 4.00-12.00, 1.50-9.50, and 4.00-12.00 μg mL(-1) for IMP, CIPRO, DEX, PAR and CIL, respectively, by using eighteen mixtures as calibration set and seven mixtures as validation set. The suggested methods were validated according to the International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) guidelines and the results revealed that they were accurate, precise and reproducible. The obtained results were statistically compared with those of the published methods and there was no significant difference.

Abstract

The methods under study are area under the curve, simultaneous equation in addition to smart signal processing techniques of manipulating ratio spectra namely Savitsky-Golay filters and continuous wavelet transform. All the methods were validated according to the ICH guidelines where accuracy, precision and repeatability were found to be within the acceptable limits. The selectivity of the proposed methods was tested using laboratory prepared mixtures and assessed by applying the standard addition technique. So, they can therefore be used for the routine analysis of ciprofloxacin in quality-control laboratories.

Abstract
This entry describes applications of known indicators and dyes as new visualizing reagents and various visualizing systems as well as photocatalytic reactions and bioautography method for the detection of bioactive compounds including drugs and compounds isolated from herbal extracts. Broadening index, detection index, characteristics of densitometric band, modified contrast index, limit of detection, densitometric visualizing index, and linearity range of detected compounds were used for the evaluation of visualizing effects of applied visualizing reagents. It was shown that visualizing effect depends on the chemical structure of the visualizing reagent, the structure of the substance detected, and the chromatographic adsorbent applied. The usefulness of densitometry to direct detection of some drugs was also shown. Quoted papers indicate the detection progress of selected drugs investigated by thin-layer chromatography (TLC).

Abstract
The aim of this research was to formulate Marsupsin-phospholipid complex (M-P Complex) in attempt to increase the bioavailability of marsupsin and to characterize this new formulation along with its evaluation. Marsupsin-phospholipid complex was formulated by mechanical dispersion method. In this new formulation, complex formation was confirmed by carrying out transmission electron microscopy (TEM), IR, (1)H-NMR and RP-HPLC analysis. TEM showed M-P Complex diameter range of 0.05-0.5 microm. The entrapment efficiency of M-P Complex was found to be 44%. In vitro release study revealed its first order release profile. Mean blood serum concentration vs time curve of marsupsin was of first order after oral administration of M-P Complex in albino rabbits which clearly showed remarkably increased bioavailability of M-P Complex than standardized marsupsin. The average value of C(max) and T(max) of M-P Complex were found to be 3.02 mg/ml and 10.2 h, respectively. Hence the findings demonstrate that complexing marsupsin with phospholipids results in better oral bioavailability and improved biological response than free form of standardized marsupsin.

Abstract
For preparing fluorinated quinolone antibiotic medicine locally used in stomatology, simultaneous determination of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and enoxacin was carried out by multiphase ion chromatography with fluorescence detection. Quinolone antibiotics were separated by Dionex OmniPac PAX-500 column with an eluent of 15 mmol/L H(2)SO(4) and 35% methanol (v/v) at a flow-rate of 1.0 ml/min and detected with fluorescence with excitation and emission wave lengths of 347 nm and 420 nm respectively. The detection limits (S/N=3) of norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enoxacin were 50, 105 and 80 ng/ml respectively. The relative standard deviations of retention time, peak area and peak height were less than 1.1% and good linear relationship resulted. The developed method was applied to pharmaceutical formulations and biological fluids.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to control the purity of 16 commercial formulations of ciprofloxacin tablets purchased in different countries or via the Internet using 19F and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Twelve out of the sixteen commercial formulations of ciprofloxacin measured by 19F NMR contain the active ingredient within 100+/-5% of stated concentration. Three formulations have a lower ciprofloxacin content between 90 and 95% and one shows a higher concentration superior to 105%. The impurity profile was characterised using 19F and 1H NMR, and is characteristic of the manufacturer. Four to twelve fluorinated impurities among them fluoride ion and two already known compounds were detected and quantified in the sixteen formulations analysed by 19F NMR. Two other non-fluorinated impurities were observed in the seven formulations analysed with 1H NMR. The total content of impurities as well as their individual levels are in agreement with those reported previously in the few studies devoted to ciprofloxacin purity. However, all the formulations do not comply with the limits for impurities given in the ciprofloxacin monograph of the European Pharmacopeia. Finally, a "signature" of the formulations was obtained with Diffusion-Ordered SpectroscopY (DOSY) 1H NMR which allowed the characterisation of some excipients present in the formulations studied.

Abstract
A novel sorbent material of ultrapure silica gel provided with novel State of the Art Bonding- and Endcapping Technology commercially available under the name PerfectSil Target (250 x 4 mm, ODS-3, 5 microm, by MZ-Analysentechnik, Germany) was used and validated for the sensitive HPLC determination of ten quinolone antibiotics: enoxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin (DAN), enrofloxacin (ENR), sarafloxacin, oxolinic acid (OXO), nalidixic acid (NAL), and flumequine. The analytical column validation was performed in terms of separation efficiency, precision, and peak asymmetry. The separation was achieved at ambient temperature using a mobile phase of TFA (0.1%)-CH3OH-CH3CN delivered under the optimum gradient program, at a flow rate of 1.2 mU/min. Photodiode array detection was used and eluant was monitored at 275 nm. For the quantitative determination caffeine (7.5 ng/microL) was used as internal standard. The achieved LODs were 0.03 ng/microL per 50 microL injected volume for OXO, 0.1 ng/microL for DAN, ENR, and NAL, and 0.2 ng/microL for the remaining six studied quinolones. The method was validated in terms of interday (n = 6) and intraday (n = 5) precision and accuracy. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of pharmaceutical formulations destined either for human or for veterinary use.
