Fusion of colloidal crystals induced by monovalent and asymmetric salt: an osmotic pressure and ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering study

Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Analysis of Colloidal Crystals and Replica Materials Made from l-Arginine-Stabilized Silica Nanoparticles

Colloidal crystals made from sub-100 nm silica nanoparticles have provided a versatile platform for the template-assisted synthesis of three-dimensionally interconnected semiconducting, metallic, and magnetic replicas. However, the detailed structure of these materials has not yet been characterized. In this study, we investigated the structures of colloidal crystalline films and germanium replicas by scanning electron microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering. The structures of colloidal crystals made by evaporative assembly depends on the size of l-arginine-capped silica nanoparticles. Particles smaller than ∼31 nm diameter assemble into non-close-packed arrangements (bcc) whereas particles larger than 31 nm assemble into random close-packed structures with disordered hexagonal phase. Polycrystalline films of these materials retain their structures and long-range order upon infiltration at high temperature and pressure, and the structure is preserved in Ge replicas. The shear force during deposition and dispersity of silica nanoparticles contributes to the size-based variation in the structure and to the size of crystal domains in the colloidal crystal films.

Phase separation of binary mixtures induced by soft centrifugal fields

We use the model system ethanol-dodecane to demonstrate that giant critical fluctuations induced by easily accessible weak centrifugal fields as low as 2000g can be observed above the miscibility gap of a binary liquid mixture. Moreover, several degrees above the phase transition, i.e. in the one-phase region, strong gradients of ethanol concentration occur upon centrifugation. In this case, the standard interpretation of sedimentation equilibrium in the analytical ultracentrifuge (AUC) yields an apparent molar mass of ethanol three orders of magnitude higher than the real value. Notably, these composition gradients have no influence on the distribution gradient of solutes such as dyes like Nile red. The thick opaque interphase formed upon centrifugation does not appear as the commonly observed sharp meniscus, but as a turbidity zone, similar to critical opalescence. This layer is a few millimeters thick and separates two fluids with low compositional gradients. All these effects can be qualitatively understood and explained using the Flory-Huggins solution model coupled to classical density functional theory (DFT). In this domain hetero-phase fluctuations can be triggered by gravity even far from the critical point. Taking into account Jean Perrin's approach to external fields in colloids, a self-consistent definition of the Flory effective volume and an explicit calculation of the total free energy per unit volume is possible.

Self-assembly of fatty acids in the presence of amines and cationic components

Fatty acids can self-assemble under various shapes in the presence of amines or cationic components. We assemble and compare these types of self-assembly leading toward a catanionic system either with a cationic surfactant or with an amine component playing the role of counter-ion. First, we focus on the molar ratio as a key driving parameter. Known and yet un-known values from other quantities governing the colloidal properties of these systems such as structural surface charge, osmotic pressure, molecular segregation, rigidity, in plane colloidal interactions and melting transition are discussed. We include also recent results obtained on the interfacial and foaming properties of these systems. We will highlight the specificity of these self-assemblies leading to unusual macroscopic properties rich of robust applications.

Volume terms for charged colloids: a grand-canonical treatment

We present a study of thermodynamic properties of suspensions of charged colloids on the basis of linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory. We calculate the effective Hamiltonian of the colloids by integrating out the ionic degrees of freedom grand canonically. This procedure not only yields the well-known pairwise screened-Coulomb interaction between the colloids, but also additional volume terms that affect the phase behavior and the thermodynamic properties, such as the osmotic pressure. These calculations are greatly facilitated by the grand-canonical character of our treatment of the ions and allow for relatively fast computations compared to earlier studies in the canonical ensemble. Moreover, the present derivation of the volume terms are relatively simple, make a direct connection with Donnan equilibrium, yield an explicit expression for the effective screening constant, and allow for extensions to include, for instance, nonlinear effects.
