Abstract
The VCD spectra of several chiral compounds containing the CF3 group are reviewed and analyzed. The list of compounds contains pharmaceutically relevant molecules as well as simple model molecules, having the value of case studies. In particular we point out the importance of the sign of the VCD band relative to some stretching normal mode of CF3 in the region 1110-1150 cm-1, as diagnostic of the configuration of stereogenic carbons C* to which the CF3 group is bound: the correspondence (-) ↔ (R) and (+) ↔ (S) holds for 100% of 1-aryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanols. DFT calculations confirm these conclusions, but for the rule established here they serve just as a check. This rule is tested on two new compounds, namely N-tert-butanesulfinyl-1-(quinoline-4-yl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethylamine, 8, and 4-[2-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxyethyl)pyrrolidin-1-yl]-2-(trifluoromethyl)benzonitrile, 10, both containing two stereogenic elements, one of them being an asymmetric carbon C* of unknown configuration binding a CF3 group. Discussion of the general validity of the rule is provided and some further tests are run on compounds in well-established drugs.

Abstract
[Structure: see text]. The absolute configurations of three compounds with a rigid 1,8-disubstituted as-hydrindacene skeleton have been determined using vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Experimental spectra were compared to B3LYP/6-31G and B3LYP/cc-pVTZ level predicted spectra. Based on the agreement between the predicted and experimental spectra, the stereochemistry could be assigned with high confidence. The results were found to be in agreement with ECD determinations and/or predictions based on the applied asymmetric methods in the synthetic route.

Abstract
Advances in the measurement, calculation, and application of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) for the determination of absolute configuration are described. The purpose of the review is to provide an up-to-date perspective on the capability of VCD to solve problems of absolute stereochemistry for chiral molecules primarily in the solution state. The scope of the article covers the experimental methods needed for the accurate measurement of VCD spectra and the theoretical steps required to systematically deduce absolute configuration. Determination of absolute configuration of a molecule by VCD requires knowledge of its conformation or conformational distribution, and hence VCD analysis necessarily provides solution-state conformation information, in many cases available by no other method, as an additional benefit. Comparisons of the advantages and limitations of VCD relative to other available chiroptical methods of analysis are also presented.

Abstract
1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoro-2-(fluoromethoxy)-3-methoxypropane, compound B, is a product obtained in the degradation of the anesthetic Sevoflurane. Enantiopure (+)-B was investigated using vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Experimental absorption and VCD spectra of (+)-B in CDCl(3) solution in the 2,000-900 cm(-1) region are compared with the ab initio predictions of absorption and VCD spectra obtained from density functional theory using B3LYP/6-31G* basis set for different conformers of (S)-1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoro-2-(fluoromethoxy)-3-methoxypropane. This comparison indicates that (+)-B is of the (S)-configuration in CDCl(3) solution, in agreement with previous literature results. Our results also indicate that this compound adopts six predominant conformations in CDCl(3) solution.

Abstract
Vibrational absorption and circular dichroism spectra of dextrorotatory, levorotatory, and racemic mixture of tert-butylphenylphosphinothioic acid have been measured in CCl(4) solutions in the 2000-900 cm(-1) region. The conformations for both tautomeric structures of (S)-tert-butylphenylphosphinothioic acid are investigated using the B3LYP functional with the 6-31G* basis set. For the most stable conformation, the absorption and VCD spectra are predicted ab initio using the B3LYP functional with 6-31G*, 6-311G(2d, 2p), 6-31+G, and 6-311G(3df, 3pd) basis sets. A different functional, B3PW91, was also used with the 6-31G* basis set. The predicted spectra are compared to the experimental spectra. The comparison indicates that (-)-tert-butylphenylphosphinothioic acid is of the (S)-configuration and exists in only one tautomeric structure and one conformation in CCl(4) solution.

Abstract
Enantiopure (+)-2,5-dimethylthiolane and (-)-2,5-dimethylsulfolane were prepared using literature procedures and investigated using vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Experimental absorption and VCD spectra of (+)-2,5-dimethylthiolane and (-)-2,5-dimethylsulfolane in CCl(4) solution in the 2000-900 cm(-)(1) region were compared with the ab initio predictions of absorption and VCD spectra obtained with density functional theory using the B3LYP/6-311G(2d, 2p) basis set for different conformers of (2R,5R)-2,5-dimethylthiolane and (2R,5R)-2,5-dimethylsulfolane. This comparison indicates that (+)-2,5-dimethylthiolane is of the (2R,5R)-configuration and has two predominant conformations in CCl(4) solution. In addition, (-)-2,5-dimethylsulfolane is of (2R,5R)-configuration and has only one predominant conformation. The stereochemical assignment is in agreement with literature.

Abstract
Alkylation of the alpha-carbanion of (R)-(-)-tert-butyl methyl sulfoxide (4) with n-propyl bromide afforded (+)-n-butyl tert-butyl sulfoxide (1) to which the absolute configuration (R) was ascribed. This assignment was confirmed by X-ray analysis of the complex 6 obtained from the enantiomerically pure sulfoxide (-)-1 and mercury chloride. Vibrational absorption and circular dichroism spectra of (+)-1 were measured in CDCl3 solution in the 2000-900 cm(-1) region and compared with the ab initio predictions of absorption and VCD spectra obtained with density functional theory using the B3LYP/6-31G basis set for different conformers of (R)-1. This comparison indicated also that (+)-1 is of the (R)-configuration.

Abstract
Enantiomeric tert-butylphenylphosphine oxides have been isolated via resolution of the racemate with mandelic acid and investigated by using vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). Vibrational absorption and circular dichroism spectra of dextrorotatory, levorotatory, and racemic mixture of tert-butylphenylphosphine oxide have been measured in CDCl(3) and CHCl(3) solutions in the 2000-900 cm(-)(1) region. Experimental spectra are compared with the ab initio predictions of absorption and VCD spectra obtained with density functional theory using B3LYP/6-31G basis set for different tautomeric structures and conformers of (S)-tert-butylphenylphosphine oxide. This comparison indicates that (-)-tert-butylphenylphosphine oxide is of the (S)-configuration and indicates only one tautomeric structure and one conformation predominant for tert-butylphenylphosphine oxide in CDCl(3) and CHCl(3) solutions.
