Aluminum toxicity in plants and its possible mitigation in acid soils by biochar: A review

Toxicity of aluminum (Al) is a serious problem for agricultural plants, especially due to excessive soil acidification caused by continuous intensive agriculture and modified environmental conditions related with global climate change. Decreased root elongation and shoot growth, reduced biomass production, nutrient imbalance and altered physiological and metabolic processes are responsible for lower yield and crop quality and therefore, decreased variability and productivity of the land. Recently, biochar is gaining popularity for ameliorating metal toxicity in soils. However, there is a lack of comprehensive information regarding the effects of biochar and its functioning. Multiple mechanisms are involved in ameliorating Al toxicity in which inherent properties of biochar influencing Al adsorption, absorption, complexation, cation exchange and electrostatic interaction are considered to play major roles. Modification of biochar to enhance these mechanisms might hold the key for long term solution. Present review indicates gaps for further research. Long term field studies are needed to understand the effects of biochar on Al toxicity.

Cell size and the blockage of electron transfer in photosynthesis: proposed endpoints for algal assays and its application to soil alga Chlorococcum infusionum

This study evaluated multiple endpoints of algal assays to identify sensitive and easy to use endpoints that could be applied to evaluate algal toxicity in metal-polluted soil extracts. Soil algae play an important role in trophic levels; thus, Chlorococcum infusionum was selected as the test species. Soil extracts were used because they might help identify potential soil retention and ecological hazards caused by pollutants that are present in the soil aqueous phase. The multi-endpoints measured were growth yield, photosynthetic activities, and cell viabilities. Nine parameters were measured to evaluate photosynthetic activity; namely, specific energy fluxes per quinone A-reducing photosystem II reaction center (absorption flux, trapped energy flux, electron transport flux, and dissipated energy flux per reaction center), quantum yields (maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry, quantum yield of electron transport, quantum yield of energy dissipation, and average quantum yield of primary photochemistry), and the blockage of electron transfer from the reaction center to the quinone pool. Cell viability was evaluated by measuring cell size, cell granularity, and the autofluorescence of chlorophyll using flow cytometry. The results showed that heavy metals reduced growth yield, cell viability, and the photosynthetic activity of C. infusionum in soil extracts. Out of the 13 tested endpoints, the blockage of electron transfer from the reaction center to the quinone pool and cell size represented the most sensitive endpoints. We propose that both endpoints should be measured, along with conventional growth yield, to determine the effect of soil pollutants and to lower pollutant concentrations in soils.

Chlorpyrifos degradation in a biomixture of biobed at different maturity stages

The biomixture is a principal element controlling the degradation efficacy of the biobed. The maturity of the biomixture used in the biobed affects its overall performance of the biobed, but this is not well studied yet. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of using a typical composition of Swedish biomixture at different maturity stages on the degradation of chlorpyrifos. Tests were made using biomixture at three maturity stages: 0 d (BC0), 15 d (BC15) and 30 d (BC30); chlorpyrifos was added to the biobeds at final concentration of 200, 320 and 480 mg kg(-1). Chlorpyrifos degradation in the biomixture was monitored over time. Formation of TCP (3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyrinidol) was also quantified, and hydrolytic and phenoloxidase activities measured. The biomixture efficiently degraded chlorpyrifos (degradation efficiency >50%) in all the evaluated maturity stages. However, chlorpyrifos degradation decreased with increasing concentrations of the pesticide. TCP formation occurred in all biomixtures, but a major accumulation was observed in BC30. Significant differences were found in both phenoloxidase and hydrolytic activities in the three maturity stages of biomixture evaluated. Also, these two biological activities were affected by the increase in pesticide concentration. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that chlorpyrifos can be degraded efficiently in all the evaluated maturity stages.

Heavy metal content in soils under different wastewater irrigation patterns in Chihuahua, Mexico

An area near the city of Chihuahua has been traditionally irrigated with wastewater to grow forage crops. It has been hypothesized that metal levels could be found in these soils high enough to cause potential health problems to the population. The objective of this study was to determine heavy metal concentrations in different soils due to irrigation practices. Four soil types were evaluated; a soil with a past and present history of wastewater irrigation (S1), a soil with a history of wastewater irrigation until 2003 (S2), a soil with no irrigation history (S3), and a soil similar to S1 and adjacent to the river where the wastewater is transported (S11). Three soil depths were evaluated; 0-15, 15-30 and 30-50 cm. Consequently, a total of 150 soil samples were analyzed evaluating pH, EC, OM and the following elements; Na, K, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu and Fe. The pH (P=0.000) and EC (P=0.000) were different for each soil type but no differences were noted for soil depth and the interaction. Maximum pH levels were noted in S3 with a value of 8.74 while maximum EC was observed in S1 with a value of 0.850 dSm-1. The OM level was different for soil type (P=0.000), soil depth (P=0.005) and the interaction (P=0.014). S1 and S11 obtained maximum levels of OM while minimum levels were noted in S3. Maximum OM levels were observed at the 0-15 cm depth followed by the 15-30 cm depth and finally at the 30-50 cm depth. The highest concentration of metals was as follows: K in S1 (359.3 mg kg-1); Cd in S1 (4.48 mg kg-1); Pb in S11 (155.83 mg kg-1); Ni in S1 (10.74 mg kg-1); Cu in S1 (51.36 mg kg-1); B in S3 (41.5 mg kg-1); Fe in S3 (20,313.0 mg kg-1), Cr in S3 (44.26 mg kg-1) and Na in S3 (203.0 mg kg-1). The conclusion is that some metals are present in the soils due to anthropogenic activities but others are present in natural forms.

Temporal changes of selected chemical properties in three manure - amended soils of Hawaii

Soil amendment with organic materials (crop residues animal manure, and green manure) reportedly has positive effects on soil properties, from acidity to plant-nutrient availability. To examine that hypothesis, an incubation study was conducted to assess the changes in some chemical properties of three different tropical soils (Andisol, Ultisol, and Oxisol) amended with chicken manure and green manure (Leucaena leucocephala) at the rate of 10tha(-1). The results showed that organic amendments raised soil pH and EC, regardless of the type of manure used. Manuring lowered the concentrations of Mehlich-3 extractable Ca, P, Mn and Si in all soils and decreased the concentration of Mg in the Ultisol and Oxisol. However, manure amendment led to increases in the concentrations of Mg and K in the Andisol. Organic amendments caused a decrease in KCl extractable Al. Initial soluble C levels were highest in the Oxisol (60micromolg(-1)) and lowest in the Andisol (20micromolg(-1)). The concentration of soluble C decreased exponentially with duration of incubation. Three low molecular weight organic molecules (acetic acid, catechol and oxalic acid) out of the eight tested were found in all manure-amended soils. This study quantified the release of some Al chelating organic acids, the reduction of exchangeable Al, and the changes in major plant-nutrients when organic materials were added to nutrient poor, tropical acid soils.
