Stretch-reflex mechanical response to varying types of previous muscle activities

Statistical performance of observational work sampling for assessment of categorical exposure variables: a simulation approach illustrated using PATH data

Objectives:

Observational work sampling is often used in occupational studies to assess categorical biomechanical exposures and occurrence of specific work tasks. The statistical performance of data obtained by work sampling is, however, not well understood, impeding informed measurement strategy design. The purpose of this study was to develop a procedure for assessing the statistical properties of work sampling strategies evaluating categorical exposure variables and to illustrate the usefulness of this procedure to examine bias and precision of exposure estimates from samples of different sizes.

Methods:

From a parent data set of observations on 10 construction workers performing a single operation, the probabilities were determined for each worker of performing four component tasks and working in four mutually exclusive trunk posture categories (neutral, mild flexion, severe flexion, twisted). Using these probabilities, 5000 simulated data sets were created via probability-based resampling for each of six sampling strategies, ranging from 300 to 4500 observations. For each strategy, mean exposure and exposure variability metrics were calculated at both the operation level and task level and for each metric, bias and precision were assessed across the 5000 simulations.

Results:

Estimates of exposure variability were substantially more uncertain at all sample sizes than estimates of mean exposures and task proportions. Estimates at small sample sizes were also biased. With only 600 samples, proportions of the different tasks and of working with a neutral trunk posture (the most common) were within 10% of the true target value in at least 80% of all the simulated data sets; rarer exposures required at least 1500 samples. For most task-level mean exposure variables and for all operation-level and task-level estimates of exposure variability, performance was low, even with 4500 samples. In general, the precision of mean exposure estimates did not depend on the exposure variability between workers.

Conclusions:

The suggested probability-based simulation approach proved to be versatile and generally suitable for assessing bias and precision of data collection strategies using work sampling to estimate categorical data. The approach can be used in both real and hypothetical scenarios, in ergonomics, as well as in other areas of occupational epidemiology and intervention research. The reported statistical properties associated with sample size are likely widely relevant to studies using work sampling to assess categorical variables.

Neuromuscular control in landing from supra-maximal dropping height

The present study utilized high-impact supra-maximal landings to examine the influence of the pre-impact force level on the post-impact electromyographic (EMG) activity and, in particular, on the short latency EMG reflex (SLR) component. Unilateral-leg landings were performed in a sitting position on a sledge apparatus after release from high, but individually constant dropping height. A lower limb guiding device fixed to the front of the sledge seat allowed the subjects to sustain a given pre-set force level up to impact. This force level was either freely chosen or set at 20, 35, and 50% of maximal isometric plantarflexion force. EMG activity was recorded from eight major lower limb muscles. It was expected that the increase in the pre-impact force level would require the intervention of a protective neural strategy during the post-impact phase that would attenuate the SLR amplitude. The ultrasonography recordings confirmed that the soleus fascicles were stretched to induce SLR. The main finding was the similarity across all tested conditions of the impact peak force and post-impact EMG activity, including the SLR response. Both observations are mostly attributed to the similar EMG levels and close force levels reached toward impact. The instruction to maintain a given pre-set force level was indeed overruled when getting close to impact. It is suggested that, in the present supra-maximal landing condition, a protective central neural strategy did occur that took into account the pre-set force level to secure similar impact loads.

Maximal force during eccentric and isometric actions at different elbow angles

The purpose of this study was to examine a course of force potentiation and/or inhibition during maximal voluntary eccentric action. Maximal voluntary force (MVC) of elbow flexion of ten healthy male volunteers was measured during isometric and isokinetic eccentric action starting from 80 degrees or 110 degrees and ending at 140 degrees elbow angle. Surface EMG was recorded from biceps brachii (BB) and brachioradialis (BR) muscles. Maximal voluntary eccentric force during the first 10 degrees of the movement was higher (P<0.001) than the maximal voluntary isometric preactivation force both in 80 degrees and in 110 degrees starting position at all three velocities (1, 2, and 4 rad s(-1)). The relative force potentiation was velocity dependent being smallest at the lowest stretching speed (P<0.01). Average EMG (aEMG) of BB and BR decreased as the joint angle increased both in eccentric and in isometric actions but the decrease in aEMG towards extension was somewhat higher in eccentric actions as compared to isometric. It was concluded that the force measured during the first 10 degrees of eccentric contraction always exceeded the maximal voluntary isometric preactivation force regardless of the joint angle or of the movement velocity. When maximal voluntary preactivation preceded the stretch, the relative force potentiation seemed to be greater at higher stretching velocities (velocity dependent) while at lower preactivation levels, the velocity dependence was not observed. Decreased muscle activation and lower maximal voluntary force towards the end of the movement suggested inhibition during maximal voluntary eccentric actions.

Effects of effort and EMG levels on short-latency stretch reflex modulation after varying background muscle contractions

It is known that the short-latency stretch reflex (SLSR) is modulated by the background muscle activity when it is elicited at matched torque levels. This study was designed to examine the effects of muscle contraction types before a stretch perturbation on SLSR in the human soleus muscle (SOL) when SLSR was elicited at the same levels of effort and at matched electromyographic (EMG) activity levels. A mechanical stretch perturbation was applied to the calf muscles when the ankle joint reached a ninety degree tibio-tarsal joint angle after the muscles performed an isometric (pre-ISO), shortening (pre-SHO) and lengthening contraction (pre-LEN). Subjects were seated on an ankle ergometer chair and developed 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% and 70% ankle joint torque (AJT) of maximum voluntary isometric plantar flexion contraction at 80 degrees in pre-SHO, at 90 degrees in pre-ISO and at 100 degrees in pre-LEN. After that, isometric or dynamic contractions started, and the subjects were asked to maintain effort levels as, needed, to maintain the target torque levels until the end of the stretch. They relaxed their muscles fully after the stretch. This chain of processes was consecutively repeated 10 times. EMG signals obtained from SOL were averaged after they were high-pass filtered and full-wave rectified. Some major findings resulted: (1) there were no differences in SLSR area in the active muscle between pre-ISO and pre-SHO, whereas its waveform was steeper in pre-ISO than in pre-SHO. (2) SLSR p-to-p amplitude and waveform were larger and steeper in the active muscle than in the relaxed one in all conditions, whereas they were independent of the effort levels once the muscle was activated. This led to steady SLSR modulation in response to the background muscle contraction in the active muscle regardless of whether the SLSR was elicited at matched AJT or EMG activity levels. These findings suggest that SLSR is closely related to the muscle spindle sensitivity influenced by the following factors: (1) the background muscle contraction type, and (2) gamma motoneuron activity set by CNS based on the effort level.

The effects of muscle history on short latency stretch reflex response of soleus muscle

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the combined effects of muscle history, activation and stretching velocity on short latency stretch response (SLR). Stretches (70, 120 and 200 deg s-1) were elicited to both passive and active (10-25% MVC) triceps surae muscle with constant (ISO), lengthened (LEN) or shortened (SHO) muscle length. Under the passive SHO pre-condition both SLR amplitude and reflex torque (RT) decreased where as latency increased compared with the passive ISO pre-condition. Such observations were absent in active trials. Stretches applied to a lengthening passive muscle (LEN) resulted in smaller SLR amplitude and RT compared with passive ISO. In active muscle the stretch response increased with stretching velocity in ISO and SHO. However, in LEN there was large interindividual variability and no velocity dependent increase in SLR amplitude was observed. Smaller amplitude and longer latency of passive SLR in SHO could result from increased slack in the intrafusal fibres, which may be compensated by fusimotor activation during the active condition. The mechanism behind the smaller amplitude in passive LEN and the lack of velocity dependence in active LEN may be related to changes in motoneuron pool excitability or changes in the spindle sensitivity to stretch.

Mapping of movement in the isometrically contracting human soleus muscle reveals details of its structural and functional complexity

It is becoming increasingly apparent that precise knowledge of the anatomic features of muscle, aponeurosis, and tendons is necessary for understanding how a muscle-tendon complex generates force and accomplishes length changes. This report presents both anatomic and functional data from the human soleus muscle acquired by using magnetic resonance imaging. The results show a strong relationship between the complex three-dimensional structure of the muscle-tendon system and the intramuscular distribution of tissue velocities during in vivo isometric contractions. The proximal region of the muscle is unipennate, whereas the midregion has a radially bipennate hemicylindrical structure, and the distal region is quadripennate. Tissue velocity mapping shows that the highest velocity regions overlay the aponeuroses connected to the Achilles tendon. These are located on the anterior and posterior surfaces of the muscle. The lowest velocities overlay the aponeuroses connected to the origin of the muscle and are generally located intramuscularly.

Control strategies correcting inaccurately programmed fingertip forces: model predictions derived from human behavior

When picking up a familiar object between the index finger and the thumb, the motor commands are predetermined by the CNS to correspond to the frictional demand of the finger-object contact area. If the friction is less than expected, the object will start to slip out of the hand, giving rise to unexpected sensory information. Here we study the correction strategies of the motor system in response to an unexpected frictional demand. The motor commands to the mononeuron pool are estimated by a novel technique combining behavioral recordings and neuromuscular modelling. We first propose a mathematical model incorporating muscles, hand mechanics, and the action of lifting an object. A simple control system sends motor commands to and receives sensory signals from the model. We identify three factors influencing the efficiency of the correction: the time development of the motor command, the delay between the onset of the grip and load forces (GF-LF-delay), and how fast the lift is performed. A sensitivity analysis describes how these factors affect the ability to prevent or stop slipping and suggests an efficient control strategy that prepares and corrects for an altered frictional condition. We then analyzed fingertip grip and load forces (GF and LF) and position data from 200 lifts made by five healthy subjects. The friction was occasionally reduced, forcing an increase of the GF to prevent the object being dropped. The data were then analyzed by feeding it through the inverted model. This provided an estimate of the motor commands to the motoneuron pool. As suggested by the sensitivity analysis the GF-LF-delay was indeed used by the subjects to prevent slip. In agreement with recordings from neurons in the primary motor cortex of the monkey, a sharp burst in the estimated GF motor command (NGF) efficiently arrested any slip. The estimated motor commands indicate a control system that uses a small set of corrective commands, which together with the GF-LF-delay form efficient correction strategies. The selection of a strategy depends on the amount of tactile information reporting unexpected friction and how long it takes to arrive. We believe that this technique of estimating the motor commands behind the fingertip forces during a precision grip lift can provide a powerful tool for the investigation of the central control of the motor system.
