Variations in the relationship between the frequency content of EMG signals and the rate of torque development in voluntary and elicited contractions

Effects of oncoming target velocities on rapid force production and accuracy of force production intensity and timing

The present study aimed to clarify the effects of oncoming target velocities on the ability of rapid force production and accuracy and variability of simultaneous control of both force production intensity and timing. Twenty male participants (age: 21.0 ± 1.4 years) performed rapid gripping with a handgrip dynamometer to coincide with the arrival of an oncoming target by using a horizontal electronic trackway. The oncoming target velocities were 4, 8, and 12 m · s^-1, which were randomly produced. The grip force required was 30% of the maximal voluntary contraction. Although the peak force (Pf) and rate of force development (RFD) increased with increasing target velocity, the value of the RFD to Pf ratio was constant across the 3 target velocities. The accuracy of both force production intensity and timing decreased at higher target velocities. Moreover, the intrapersonal variability in temporal parameters was lower in the fast target velocity condition, but constant variability in 3 target velocities was observed in force intensity parameters. These results suggest that oncoming target velocity does not intrinsically affect the ability for rapid force production. However, the oncoming target velocity affects accuracy and variability of force production intensity and timing during rapid force production.

Measurement and modeling of stimulus-evoked electromyography in lengthened and shortened muscles for spinal cord injured subjects during an electrically-elicited fatigue process

This study compares the amplitude and temporal features of stimulus-evoked electromyography (EMG) of paralyzed muscle, rectus femoris (RF), in both lengthened and shortened positions of six spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects during an electrically elicited fatigue process. The torque output and evoked EMG were fitted by hyperbolic tangent functions from which their amplitude residual levels and temporal inflection times can be extracted. Furthermore, a structural EMG model of Fuglevand et al (1992 Biol. Cybern. 67 143-53) was modified to include type I (slow twitch) and type II (fast twitch) of motor unit (MU) fibers with viable parameters obtained from paralyzed muscles to observe their amplitude and temporal changes. Our results showed that the amplitude of stimulus-evoked EMG decreased earlier in the lengthened muscle with a shorter inflection time (48.53 +/- 8.7 s versus 55.13 +/- 4.03 s) than that of the shortened position during 120 s of stimulation time (p < 0.05). Similarly, the peak-to-peak duration (PTPd) of the evoked EMG increased faster at an earlier time to a higher asymptotical value in lengthened muscle (2.23 +/- 0.74 versus 1.77 +/- 0.54), compared to that of a shortened one (p < 0.05). These observations coincided with the higher rising rate and larger final value of the temporal coefficients, i.e., longer duration, in both type I and II MUs of lengthened muscles. From the observation of all parameters, the fatigue process in lengthened muscle proceeds faster than that in shortened muscle.

Assessment of the paraspinal muscles of subjects presenting an idiopathic scoliosis: an EMG pilot study

Background

It is known that the back muscles of scoliotic subjects present abnormalities in their fiber type composition. Some researchers have hypothesized that abnormal fiber composition can lead to paraspinal muscle dysfunction such as poor neuromuscular efficiency and muscle fatigue. EMG parameters were used to evaluate these impairments. The purpose of the present study was to examine the clinical potential of different EMG parameters such as amplitude (RMS) and median frequency (MF) of the power spectrum in order to assess the back muscles of patients presenting idiopathic scoliosis in terms of their neuromuscular efficiency and their muscular fatigue.

Methods

L5/S1 moments during isometric efforts in extension were measured in six subjects with idiopathic scoliosis and ten healthy controls. The subjects performed three 7 s ramp contractions ranging from 0 to 100% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and one 30 s sustained contraction at 75% MVC. Surface EMG activity was recorded bilaterally from the paraspinal muscles at L5, L3, L1 and T10. The slope of the EMG RMS/force (neuromuscular efficiency) and MF/force (muscle composition) relationships were computed during the ramp contractions while the slope of the EMG RMS/time and MF/time relationships (muscle fatigue) were computed during the sustained contraction. Comparisons were performed between the two groups and between the left and right sides for the EMG parameters.

Results

No significant group or side differences between the slopes of the different measures used were found at the level of the apex (around T10) of the major curve of the spine. However, a significant side difference was seen at a lower level (L3, p = 0.01) for the MF/time parameter.

Conclusion

The EMG parameters used in this study could not discriminate between the back muscles of scoliotic subjects and those of control subject regarding fiber type composition, neuromuscular efficiency and muscle fatigue at the level of the apex. The results of this pilot study indicate that compensatory strategies are potentially seen at lower level of the spine with these EMG parameters.

Effects of postural disturbances with fatigued triceps surae muscles or with 20% additional body weight

One of the main issues for balance control is the ability to generate enough forces to execute motions and uphold stability. This study aimed to investigate whether induced fatigue of the triceps surae muscles and decreased muscle force due to temporary additional body weight affected the ability to withstand balance perturbations. Another aim was to examine whether postural control adaptation over time was able to compensate for the changes induced by fatigue and additional body weight. Eleven normal subjects were exposed to vibratory proprioceptive stimulation during three test conditions; a baseline test during normal condition; when the body weight was increased by 20%, by adding additional weight load; and when the triceps surae muscles were fatigued. The tests were performed both with eyes open and closed. The body movements were evaluated by analyzing the anteroposterior and lateral torques induced towards the supporting surface measured with a force platform. Postural control was substantially affected both by the additional body weight, and by muscle fatigue in the triceps surae muscles. The anteroposterior and lateral body sway were larger both with added weight and fatigued muscles compared with the baseline test during quiet stance. However, the body sway induced by the vibratory stimulation was significantly larger with additional body weight compared with when the triceps surae muscles were fatigued. The differences between the test conditions were mostly pronounced during tests with eyes closed and in the high frequency body sway (>0.1 Hz). Postural control adaptation was able to reduce but not fully compensate for the changes induced by fatigue and additional body weight. Several hypotheses could account for these observations. (1) Fatigued muscles are less sensitive to muscle vibration, (2) muscle fatigue alters the muscle contractile efficiency and thus alters the ability to produce high-frequency, short-latency responses to balance perturbations.

Surface electromyography assessment of back muscle intrinsic properties

The purpose of this study was to assess (1) the reliability and (2) the sensitivity to low back pain status and gender of different EMG indices developed for the assessment of back muscle weakness, muscle fiber composition and fatigability. Healthy subjects (men and women) and chronic low back pain patients (men only) performed, in a static dynamometer, maximal and submaximal static trunk extension tasks (short and long duration) to assess weakness, fiber composition and fatigue. Surface EMG signals were recorded from four (bilateral) pairs of back muscles and three pairs of abdominal muscles. To assess reliability of the different EMG parameters, 40 male volunteers (20 controls and 20 chronic low back pain patients) were assessed on three occasions. Reliable EMG indices were achieved for both healthy and chronic low back pain subjects when specific measurement strategies were applied. The EMG parameters used to quantify weakness and fiber composition were insensitive to low back status and gender. The EMG fatigue parameters did not detect differences between genders but unexpectedly, healthy men showed higher fatigability than back pain patients. This result was attributed to the smaller absolute load that was attributed to the patients, a load that was defined relative to their maximal strength, a problematic measure with this population. An attempt was made to predict maximal back strength from anthropometric measurements but this prediction was prone to errors. The main difficulties and some potential solutions related to the assessment of back muscle intrinsic properties were discussed.
