Study of oriented CdWO4 scintillating crystals using synchrotron radiation

Engineering Noble Metal-like Bi onto Hierarchical SrWO4 for the Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity

Solar-driven hydrogen production from water has attracted increasing attention due to sustainable H2 fuel generation with zero-emissions. However, the design of a photocatalyst without noble metals to enable efficient water splitting is still critical for practical applications. In this study, the hierarchical microspheres of SrWO4 assembled with well-defined metallic Bi nanoparticles were synthesized through mild hydrothermal aging. The resultant photocatalyst with optimum proportion exhibited the competitive performance of a high hydrogen-generation rate at 4.5 mmol·h−1·g−1, outperforming SrWO4 and Bi by factors of 2.0 and 2.4, respectively. Both the experimental characterization and active analysis revealed that the synergistic effect of noble metal-like behavior of Bi and their electron-sink capacity mainly contribute to boosting the overall photocatalytic efficiency. This work may provide advanced insights into the application of economical bismuth elements as co-catalysts, instead of noble metals, to improve photocatalytic efficiency in solar-fuel conversion and environmental remediation.

Application of Activated Carbon Banana Peel Coated with Al2O3-Chitosan for the Adsorptive Removal of Lead and Cadmium from Wastewater

This study was aimed at evaluating the adsorption capacity of novel banana peel activated carbon (BPAC) modified with Al₃O₂@chitosan for the removal of cadmium (Cd²⁺) and lead (Pb²⁺) from wastewater. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis confirmed the synthesized BPAC@Al₃O₂@chitosan composite material. The univariate approach was used to study the influence of different experimental parameters (such as adsorbent mass, sample pH, and contact time) that affects simultaneous removal of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions. Kinetic results showed that adsorption favored the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, whereas the adsorption of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ was best described by the Langmuir model and the adsorption capacity for Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ was 46.9 mg g^-1 and 57.1 mg g^-1, respectively, for monolayer adsorption. It was shown the BPAC composite can be re-used until the third cycle of adsorption-desorption (% Re > 80). Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that the prepared BPAC@Al₃O₂@chitosan composite material is cost effective, as it is generated from waste banana peels and can be re-used. In addition, the prepared material was able to remove Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ up to 99.9%.

Luminescence Efficiency of Cadmium Tungstate (CdWO4) Single Crystal for Medical Imaging Applications

Background: In this study, the light output of a cadmium tungstate (CdWO4) single crystal was measured under various X-ray radiographic energies. Methods: A CdWO4 single crystal (10 × 10 × 10 mm3) was exposed to X-rays in the 50–130 kVp range. Measurements were evaluated against published data for single crystals of equal dimensions (CaF2:Eu and Lu3Al5O12:Ce). Since the crystal was examined for application in medical imaging detectors, the emitted optical spectrum was classified with respect to the spectral compatibility of numerous commercial optical sensors. Results: The luminescence efficiency (LE) was found to constantly increase with X-ray energy and was higher than that of CaF2:Eu for energies above 90 kVp. However, the efficiency of the previously published Lu3Al5O12:Ce was found to be constantly higher than that of CdWO4. The light emitted from CdWO4 can be optimally detected by certain charge-coupled devices (CCDs), amorphous silicon photodiodes, and photocathodes. Conclusions: The high density (7.9 g/cm3) of CdWO4 and the luminescence signal of this material make it suitable for medical imaging (such as dual energy), high-energy physics or for applications of scintillators in harsh environments.

G0W0 band structure of CdWO4

The full quasiparticle band structure of CdWO4 is calculated within the single-shot GW (G0W0) approximation using maximally localized Wannier functions, which allows one to assess the validity of the commonly used scissor operator. Calculations are performed using the Godby-Needs plasmon pole model and the accurate contour deformation technique. It is shown that while the two methods yield identical band gap energies, the low-lying states are given inaccurately by the plasmon pole model. We report a band gap energy of 4.94 eV, including spin-orbit interaction at the DFT-LDA (density functional theory-local density approximation) level. Quasiparticle renormalization in CdWO4 is shown to be correlated with localization distance. Electron and hole effective masses are calculated at the DFT and G0W0 levels.

X-ray-excited optical luminescence and X-ray absorption fine-structures studies of CdWO4 scintillator

X-ray-excited optical luminescence (XEOL) emission and excitation spectra as well as the EXAFS signal of CdWO(4) were measured in the energy region of the Cd and W absorption edges. From EXAFS refinement, structural parameters such as number of atoms, distance from the absorbing atom and width of coordination shells in the W neighborhood were determined. The role of W-O interactions on the intrinsic luminescence of CdWO(4) is discussed. The efficiencies of conversion, transfer and emission processes involved in the scintillation mechanism showed to be high when self-trapped excitons are formed locally by direct excitation of W ions. Annihilation of these excitons provides the characteristic scintillation of CdWO(4), a broad band emission with maximum at 500 nm. The presence of two energetically different O positions in the lattice gives rise to the composite structure of the luminescence band, and no influence of extrinsic defects was noticed. A mismatch between the X-ray absorption coefficient and the zero-order luminescence curves corroborates that the direct excitation of Cd ions induces secondary electronic excitations not very effective in transferring energy to the luminescent group, WO(6).
