Volcanic monitoring for radon and chemical species in the soil and in spring water samples

Transient to stationary radon (220Rn) emissions from a phonolitic rock exposed to subvolcanic temperatures

Rock substrates beneath active volcanoes are frequently subjected to temperature changes caused by the input of new magma from the depth and/or the intrusion of magma bodies of variable thickness within the subvolcanic rocks. The primary effect of the influx of hot magma is the heating of surrounding host rocks with the consequent modification of their physical and chemical properties. To assess mobilization in subvolcanic thermal regimes, we have performed radon (²²⁰Rn) thermal experiments on a phonolitic lava exposed to temperatures in the range of 100-900°C. Results from these experiments indicate that transient Rn signals are not unequivocally related to substrate deformation caused by tectonic stresses, but rather to the temperature-dependent diffusion of radionuclides through the structural discontinuities of rocks which serve as preferential pathways for gas release. Intense heating/cooling cycles are accompanied by rapid expansion and contraction of minerals. Rapid thermal cycling produced both inter- and intra-crystal microfracturing, as well as the formation of macroscopic faults. The increased number of diffusion paths dramatically intensified Rn migration, leading to much higher emissions than temperature-dependent transient changes. This geochemical behaviour is analogous to positive anomalies recorded on active volcanoes where dyke injections produce thermal stress and deformation in the host rocks. An increased Rn signal far away from the location of a magmatic intrusion is also consistent with microfracturing of subsurface rocks over long distances via thermal stress propagation and the opening of new pathways.

Arsenic in volcanic geothermal fluids of Latin America

Numerous volcanoes, hot springs, fumaroles, and geothermal wells occur in the Pacific region of Latin America. These systems are characterized by high As concentrations and other typical geothermal elements such as Li and B. This paper presents a review of the available data on As concentrations in geothermal systems and their surficial discharges and As data on volcanic gases of Latin America. Data for geothermal systems in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile are presented. Two sources of As can be recognized in the investigated sites: Arsenic partitioned into volcanic gases and emitted in plumes and fumaroles, and arsenic in rocks of volcanic edifices that are leached by groundwaters enriched in volcanic gases. Water containing the most elevated concentrations of As are mature Na-Cl fluids with relatively low sulfate content and As concentrations reaching up to 73.6 mg L⁻¹ (Los Humeros geothermal field in Mexico), but more commonly ranging from a few mg L⁻¹ to tens of mg L⁻¹. Fluids derived from Na-Cl enriched waters formed through evaporation and condensation at shallower depths have As levels of only a few μg L⁻¹. Mixing of Na-Cl waters with shallower meteoric waters results in low to intermediate As concentrations (up to a few mg L⁻¹). After the waters are discharged at the ground surface, As(III) oxidizes to As(V) and attenuation of As concentration can occur due to sorption and co-precipitation processes with iron minerals and organic matter present in sediments. Understanding the mechanisms of As enrichment in geothermal waters and their fate upon mixing with shallower groundwater and surface waters is important for the protection of water resources in Latin America.

Environmental radon studies in Mexico

Radon has been determined in soil, groundwater, and air in Mexico, both indoors and outdoors, as part of geophysical studies and to estimate effective doses as a result of radon exposure. Detection of radon has mainly been performed with solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) and, occasionally, with active detection devices based on silicon detectors or ionization chambers. The liquid scintillation technique, also, has been used for determination of radon in groundwater. The adjusted geometric mean indoor radon concentration (74 Bq m-3) in urban developments, for example Mexico City, is higher than the worldwide median concentration of radon in dwellings. In some regions, particularly hilly regions of Mexico where air pollution is high, radon concentrations are higher than action levels and the effective dose for the general population has increased. Higher soil radon levels have been found in the uranium mining areas in the northern part of the country. Groundwater radon levels are, in general, low. Soil-air radon contributing to indoor atmospheres and air pollution is the main source of increased exposure of the population.

Soil radon monitoring in the NE flank of Mt. Etna (Sicily)

Soil radon has been monitored at a fixed location on the northeastern flank of Mt. Etna, a high-risk volcano in Sicily. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the recent volcanic activity on soil radon concentration. Continuous radon measurements have been performed since July 2001. While comparison between the trend in in-soil radon concentration and the acquired meteorological series (temperature, humidity and pressure) appear to confirm a general seasonal correlation, nevertheless particular anomalies suggest a possible dependence of the radon concentration on volcanic dynamics.
