Abstract
Increased demand for a carbon-neutral sustainable energy scheme augmented by climatic threats motivates the design and exploration of novel approaches that reserve intermittent solar energy in the form of chemical bonds in molecules and materials. In this context, inspired by biological processes, artificial photosynthesis has garnered significant attention as a promising solution to convert solar power into chemical fuels from abundantly found H2O. Among the two redox half-reactions in artificial photosynthesis, the four-electron oxidation of water according to 2H2O → O2 + 4H+ + 4e- comprises the major bottleneck and is a severe impediment toward sustainable energy production. As such, devising new catalytic platforms, with traditional concepts of molecular, materials and biological catalysis and capable of integrating the functional architectures of the natural oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II would certainly be a value-addition toward this objective. In this review, we discuss the progress in construction of ideal water oxidation catalysts (WOCs), starting with the ingenuity of the biological design with earth-abundant transition metal ions, which then diverges into molecular, supramolecular and hybrid approaches, blurring any existing chemical or conceptual boundaries. We focus on the geometric, electronic, and mechanistic understanding of state-of-the-art homogeneous transition-metal containing molecular WOCs and summarize the limiting factors such as choice of ligands and predominance of environmentally unrewarding and expensive noble-metals, necessity of high-valency on metal, thermodynamic instability of intermediates, and reversibility of reactions that create challenges in construction of robust and efficient water oxidation catalyst. We highlight how judicious heterogenization of atom-efficient molecular WOCs in supramolecular and hybrid approaches put forth promising avenues to alleviate the existing problems in molecular catalysis, albeit retaining their fascinating intrinsic reactivities. Taken together, our overview is expected to provide guiding principles on opportunities, challenges, and crucial factors for designing novel water oxidation catalysts based on a synergy between conventional and contemporary methodologies that will incite the expansion of the domain of artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract
The article reported on the diastereomeric dinuclear mixed-valent complexes [(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-PzR)Ru(IV)(acac)2] (R = H, Me, meso: ΔΛ, 1a-1c; rac: ΔΔ/ΛΛ, 2a-2c) and rac-[(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Iz)Ru(IV)(acac)2], (2d) (HPz = pyrazole, HIz = indazole, acac = acetylacetonate). Moreover, the diruthenium(II,II) complexes [(HPz)3Ru(II)(μ-O)(μ-Pz)2 Ru(II)(HPz)3] (3a) and [(HIz)3Ru(II)(μ-O)(μ-Iz)2Ru(II)(HIz)3] (3d) were presented. The analogous form of 3a, i.e., [(HPz)2(Pz)Ru(III)(μ-O)(μ-Pz)2Ru(III)(Pz)(HPz)2], was previously reported. Single crystal X-ray structures of 1a-1c/2a-2d and representative 3a showed their molecular forms, including the diastereomeric nature of the former. The Ru-O-Ru angle decreased appreciably on switching from doubly bridged 1 and 2 (128-135°) to triply bridged 3a (114°). Both series of complexes displayed rhombic symmetry in their EPR spectra, with g1 and g2 being very similar for 1a-1c with an almost axial look. The mixed-valence complex with a Ru(III)Ru(IV) (S = 1/2) state of 1 and 2 would lead to iso-valence complexes of Ru(III)Ru(III) and Ru(IV)Ru(IV) with an EPR inactive state by one electron redox reaction. On the other hand, metal based {Ru(II)Ru(II)/Ru(II)Ru(III), 3a/3a+} and terminal ligand (HPz/HPz-, 3a/3a-) based redox processes displayed anisotropic and free radical EPR, respectively. An IVCT (intervalence charge transfer) band was found for the delocalised mixed valent 1 and 2 {Ru(III)Ru(IV)} or 3a+ {Ru(II)Ru(III)} in the NIR region. The intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions of 1-3 in the visible region varied systematically as a function of the metal oxidation state.

Abstract
We have synthesised twelve manganese(iii) dinuclear complexes, 1-12, in order to understand the origin of magnetic exchange (J) between the metal centres and the magnetic anisotropy (D) of each metal ion using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. All twelve complexes contain the same bridging ligand environment of one μ-oxo and two μ-carboxylato, that helped us to probe how the structural parameters, such as bond distance, bond angle and especially Jahn-Teller dihedral angle affect the magnetic behaviour. Among the twelve complexes, we found ferromagnetic coupling for five and antiferromagnetic coupling for seven. DFT computed the J and ab initio methods computed the D parameter, and are in general agreement with the experimentally determined values. The dihedral angle between the two Jahn-Teller axes of the constituent MnIII ions are found to play a key role in determining the sign of the magnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations are developed by varying the Mn-O distance and the Mn-O-Mn angle to understand how the magnetic coupling changes upon these structural changes. Among the developed correlations, the Mn-O distance is found to be the most sensitive parameter that switches the sign of the magnetic coupling from negative to positive. The single-ion zero-field splitting of the MnIII centres is found to be negative for complexes 1-11 and positive for complex 12. However, the zero-field splitting of the S = 4 state for the ferromagnetic coupled dimers is found to be positive, revealing a significant contribution from the exchange anisotropy - a parameter which has long been ignored as being too small to be effective.

Abstract
Aggregation of tetranuclear Mn(4)O(2) building blocks with alkali ion was studied. Several Mn(iii) complexes containing [Mn(4)O(2)(AcO)(7)(pyz)(2)](-) (pyz = pyrazinate) anion(s) were obtained from an assembly system containing Mn(ii), MnO(4)(-), HOAc and Hpyz (Napyz or Kpyz). These [Mn(4)O(2)](8+) complexes have monomeric (1 and 2), dimeric (4 and 5) and one-dimensional chain () structures of which alkali metal ion connects the Mn ions of adjacent [Mn(4)O(2)](8+) units through mu(1,1)- and mu(1,3)-carboxylate bridges. Complexes 2 or 3 were converted into [Mn(12)O(12)(AcO)(16)(H(2)O)(4)] in EtOH solution in the presence of HOAc. However, in MeOH solution, a coordination polymer [Mn(2)(HCOO)(4)(H(2)O)(4)](n) was obtained accompanying the oxidation of MeOH to become HCHO and HCOOH. Tracing the (1)H NMR spectra of 2 or 3 in CD(3)OD, the disappearance of the resonance signals in 3 h indicated the decomposition of the [Mn(4)O(2)](8+) cores. Complex 2 exhibits its proton NMR signals in CDCl(3) which are similar to those of its pic analogue but accompany downfield shift to various extents for all the corresponding signals. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities of complexes 2-5 in the range 5-300 K were recorded and were fitted for an Mn(4)O(2) butterfly core, giving the fitting parameters J(bb) = -2.67 to -3.76 cm(-1) and J(wb) = -1.16 to -3.14 cm(-1). Small J values indicate weak antiferromagnetic coupling interactions of the Mn(iii) sites and the spin ground states are considered as S(T) = 0 based on the J(bb)/J(wb) ratio approximately 1 for these complexes. The ESR spectra were recorded for complex 2 in dual-mode at liquid-helium temperatures and no obvious signal could be found. The addition of p-cresol gives rise to the reduction of the [Mn(4)O(2)](8+), resulting in observable signals.

Abstract
Four new binuclear Mn(III) complexes with carboxylate bridges have been synthesized: [[Mn(nn)(H(2)O)](2)(mu-ClCH(2)COO)(2)(mu-O)](ClO(4))(2) with nn = bpy (1) or phen (2) and [[Mn(bpy)(H(2)O)](2)(mu-RCOO)(2)(mu-O)](NO(3))(2) with RCOO = ClCH(2)COO (3) or CH(3)COO (4). The characterization by X-ray diffraction (1 and 3) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) (1-4) displays the relevance of this spectroscopy to the elucidation of the structural environment of the manganese ions in this kind of compound. Magnetic susceptibility data show an antiferromagnetic coupling for all the compounds: J = -2.89 cm(-1) (for 1), -8.16 cm(-1) (for 2), -0.68 cm(-1) (for 3), and -2.34 cm(-1) (for 4). Compounds 1 and 3 have the same cation complex [[Mn(bpy)(H(2)O)](2)(mu-ClCH(2)COO)(2)(mu-O)](2+), but, while 1 shows an antiferromagnetic coupling, for 3 the magnetic interaction between Mn(III) ions is very weak. The four compounds show catalase activity, and when the reaction stopped, Mn(II) compounds with different nuclearity could be obtained: binuclear [[Mn(phen)(2)](mu-ClCH(2)COO)(2)](ClO(4))(2), trinuclear [Mn(3)(bpy)(2)(mu-ClCH(2)COO)(6)], or mononuclear complexes without carboxylate. Two Mn(II) compounds without carboxylate have been characterized by X-ray diffraction: [Mn(NO(3))(2)(bpy)(2)][Mn(NO(3))(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)]NO(3) (5) and [Mn(bpy)(3)](ClO(4))(2).0.5 C(6)H(4)-1,2-(COOEt)(2).0.5H(2)O (8).
