NO3·-Initiated Gas-Phase Formation of Nitrated Phenolic Compounds in Polluted Atmosphere

Organic nitrogen (ON) compounds are key contents of particulate matter in the megacities of Asia. As a series of important ON, nitrated phenolic compounds (NPs) are of high concentration in the atmosphere, although their formation mechanism and role in particulate nucleation and growth are not fully understood. Herein, using a high level of quantum mechanical calculations, we explore the formation paths of NPs initiated by NO₃· radicals, where some common atmospheric species, such as H₂O, (H₂O)₂, NH₃, and dimethylamine (DMA), can act as molecular catalysts. The kinetic study predicts that the formation rate of methyl nitrophenols with the assistance of DMA and (H₂O)₂ can reach ∼10³ molecules·cm^-3·s^-1 in a polluted and humid atmosphere. The volatilities obtained from the empirical model show the formed NPs mainly belong to the intermediate and semivolatile organic compounds, which can participate in the growth process of aerosols rather than the early stage of cluster nucleation. Moreover, some NPs can be salified with atmospheric bases to further increase their contributions to the particulate formation.

Nitrate radicals and biogenic volatile organic compounds: oxidation, mechanisms, and organic aerosol

Oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by the nitrate radical (NO₃) represents one of the important interactions between anthropogenic emissions related to combustion and natural emissions from the biosphere. This interaction has been recognized for more than 3 decades, during which time a large body of research has emerged from laboratory, field, and modeling studies. NO₃-BVOC reactions influence air quality, climate and visibility through regional and global budgets for reactive nitrogen (particularly organic nitrates), ozone, and organic aerosol. Despite its long history of research and the significance of this topic in atmospheric chemistry, a number of important uncertainties remain. These include an incomplete understanding of the rates, mechanisms, and organic aerosol yields for NO₃-BVOC reactions, lack of constraints on the role of heterogeneous oxidative processes associated with the NO₃ radical, the difficulty of characterizing the spatial distributions of BVOC and NO₃ within the poorly mixed nocturnal atmosphere, and the challenge of constructing appropriate boundary layer schemes and non-photochemical mechanisms for use in state-of-the-art chemical transport and chemistry-climate models. This review is the result of a workshop of the same title held at the Georgia Institute of Technology in June 2015. The first half of the review summarizes the current literature on NO₃-BVOC chemistry, with a particular focus on recent advances in instrumentation and models, and in organic nitrate and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation chemistry. Building on this current understanding, the second half of the review outlines impacts of NO₃-BVOC chemistry on air quality and climate, and suggests critical research needs to better constrain this interaction to improve the predictive capabilities of atmospheric models.

Volatile organic compounds in rural atmospheres of central Portugal

Atmospheric concentrations of volatile organic compounds were measured at two rural sites in central Portugal. The sites were chosen to be in line with the summer northwesterly sea breezes in order to study the evolution of the chemical composition of air masses during transport to inland areas. The most abundant non-oxygenated hydrocarbon in the ambient air was isoprene and the monoterpenes alpha-pinene, beta-pinene and 1,8 cineol. The maximum isoprene levels (6-7 ppb) were recorded at the most inland site, suggesting an enrichment of coastal air masses with biogenic emissions during transport over eucalyptus forests. Formaldehyde was the most prominent carbonyl compound in the atmosphere but acetaldehyde and acrolein were also abundant. Concentrations of carbonyl compounds had a tendency to be higher inland, particularly for glyoxal, methyl glyoxal, methyl vinyl ketone, metacrolein and pentanal. The observed increases indicate that carbonyls were produced by photochemical oxidation of biogenic hydrocarbons in aged air masses with coastal origin. Isoprene, monoterpenes and various carbonyls exhibited pronounced diurnal variations, which are explained on the basis of emissions from vegetation, oxidation pathways of biogenic hydrocarbons and meteorological conditions.
