Abstract
Based on the concept "Derived from Agroforestry, belong to (Servicing) Agroforestry", we herein achieved the tandem catalytic transformation of lignin to phenolic aryl acrylic esters, which can work as plant growth regulators. The transformation involves the first catalytic oxidative fractionation (COF) of lignin into aromatic aldehydes, which can further undergo Knoevenagel condensation with acids/esters with active Cα-H to generate the phenolic aryl acrylic esters. For the first lignin transformation, the Cu salt (CuSO4) in a 7.5 wt % NaOH aqueous solution could achieve the selective cleavage of lignin C-C bonds to provide a 25.0 wt % yield of aromatic aldehydes. Subsequently, the unique basic sites of the self-assembled hybrid system of CeO2 and 2-cyanopyridine could overcome the limitations of traditional homogeneous/heterogeneous bases and facilitate the condensation between phenolic-containing aromatic aldehydes and malonic ester to aryl acrylic esters. Furthermore, the lignin-based phenolic aryl acrylic esters showed different plant growth regulation activity based on the various structural groups for peppermint seed cultivation. The above results can expand the high-value utilization of lignin in the agroforestry field.

Abstract
The heterogenization of metal-complex catalysts to be applied in water oxidation reactions is a currently growing field of great scientific impact for the development of energy conversion devices simulating the natural photosynthesis process. The attachment of IrCp*Cl complexes to the dipyridyl-pyridazine N-chelating sites on the surface of SBA-15 promotes the formation of metal bipyridine-like complexes, which can act as catalytic sites in the oxidation of water to dioxygen, the key half-reaction of artificial photosynthetic systems. The efficiency of the heterogeneous catalyst, Ir@NdppzSBA, in cerium(IV)-driven water oxidation was thoroughly evaluated, achieving high catalytic activity even at a long reaction time. The reusability and stability were also examined after three reaction cycles, with a slight loss of activity. A comparison with an analogous homogeneous iridium catalyst revealed the enhanced durability and performance of the heterogeneous system based on the Ir@NdppzSBA catalyst due to the stability of the SBA-15 structure as well as the isolated metal active sites. Thereby, this new versatile synthesis route for the preparation of water oxidation catalysts opens a new avenue for the construction of alternative heterogeneous catalytic systems with high surface area, ease of functionalization, and facile separation to improve the efficiency in the water oxidation reaction.

Abstract
The development of various metal oxide semiconductor materials has resulted in better performance of the gas sensors in terms of selectivity, sensitivity, and response time. Different types of nanostructured materials, i.e., 2D materials, carbon nanotubes, and metal oxides, are used in the gas sensing applications. Generally, the metal oxide-based gas sensor operates at higher temperature to activate the adsorption process between the material surface and the target gas. The higher operating temperature of the gas sensor leads to more power consumption and produces defects in the grain boundary of metal oxide. To improve the selectivity and minimize the power consumption, nanoparticle-based p-type semiconductor materials are being developed. P-type metal oxide-based semiconductor materials have the ability to produce a hole accumulation layer which can chemisorb the oxygen molecules of higher concentration and these materials are not affected by humidity. The structure of p-type nanomaterial-based gas sensor depends upon the fabrication techniques which can affect the sensing properties of semiconductor materials. The hole accumulation layer is also known as conduction layer which is developed in the outer shell of p-type semiconductor material and the sensing mechanism is controlled by grain boundaries which is different from the n-type semiconductor material. This paper reviews the preparation methods, morphological analysis, and sensing mechanisms of nanomaterial-based p-type metal oxide-based gas sensors.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is one potential solution to the energy and environmental crisis and greatly relies on the development of the catalysts. Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), a typically nontoxic metal oxide, is eco-friendly and exhibits strong oxidation ability, and has attracted considerable attention from researchers. Furthermore, unique Lewis acid sites (LASs) and Brønsted acid sites (BASs) are observed on Nb2O5 prepared by different methods. Herein, the recent advances in the synthesis and application of Nb2O5-based photocatalysts, including the pure Nb2O5, doped Nb2O5, metal species supported on Nb2O5, and other composited Nb2O5 catalysts, are summarized. An overview is provided for the role of size and crystalline phase, unsaturated Nb sites and oxygen vacancies, LASs and BASs, dopants and surface metal species, and heterojunction structure on the Nb2O5-based catalysts in photocatalysis. Finally, the challenges are also presented, which are possibly overcome by integrating the synthetic methodology, developing novel photoelectric characterization techniques, and a profound understanding of the local structure of Nb2O5.

Abstract
High-surface-area mesoporous CeO2 (hsmCeO2 ) was prepared by a facile organic-template-induced homogeneous precipitation process and showed excellent catalytic activity in imine synthesis in the absence of base from primary alcohols and amines in air atmosphere at low temperature. For comparison, ordinary CeO2 and hsmCeO2 after different thermal treatments were also investigated. XRD, N2 physisorption, UV-Raman, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, O2 temperature-programmed desorption, EPR spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to unravel the structural and redox properties. The hsmCeO2 calcined at 400 °C shows the highest specific surface area (158 m2 g-1 ), the highest fraction of surface coordinatively unsaturated Ce3+ ions (18.2 %), and the highest concentration of reactive oxygen vacancies (2.4×1015 spins g-1 ). In the model reaction of oxidative coupling of benzyl alcohol and aniline, such an exceptional redox property of the hsmCeO2 catalyst can boost benzylideneaniline formation (2.75 and 5.55 mmol g ceria - 1 h-1 based on >99 % yield at 60 and 80 °C, respectively) in air with no base additives. It can also work effectively at a temperature of 30 °C and in gram-scale synthesis. These are among the best results for all benchmark ceria catalysts in the literature. Moreover, the hsmCeO2 catalyst shows a wide scope towards primary alcohols and amines with good to excellent yield of imines. The influence of reaction parameters, the reusability of the catalyst, and the reaction mechanism were investigated.

Abstract
Porous ceria was obtained using a unique solvothermal reaction in acetonitrile, applying high temperature and pressure. The resulting material comprised homogeneous and monodisperse spheres and exhibited an extremely large surface area of 152 m2 g-1. From catalytic performance evaluation by vapor- and liquid-phase reactions, the synthesized porous ceria showed superior and different reaction activity compared with commercial CeO2. To examine the origin of the reaction activity of the present porous ceria, synchrotron hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) measurements were carried out. The systematic study of HAXPES measurements revealed that the obtained porous ceria with the present solvothermal method contained a very high concentration of Ce3+. Moreover, O2-pulse adsorption analyses demonstrated a significant oxygen adsorption capacity exceeding 268 μmol-O g-1 at 400 °C owing to its high contents of Ce3+ species.

Abstract
Solar-to-chemical conversion via photocatalysis is of paramount importance for a sustainable future. Thus, investigating the synergistic effects promoted by light in photocatalytic reactions is crucial. The tandem oxidative coupling of alcohols and amines is an attractive route to synthesize imines. Here, we unravel the performance and underlying reaction pathway in the visible-light-driven tandem oxidative coupling of benzyl alcohol and aniline employing Au/CeO2 nanorods as catalysts. We propose an alternative reaction pathway for this transformation that leads to improved efficiencies relative to individual CeO2 nanorods, in which the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation in Au nanoparticles (NPs) plays an important role. Our data suggests a synergism between the hot electrons and holes generated from the LSPR excitation in Au NPs. While the oxygen vacancies in CeO2 nanorods trap the hot electrons and facilitate their transfer to adsorbed O2 at surface vacancy sites, the hot holes in the Au NPs facilitate the α-H abstraction from the adsorbed benzyl alcohol, evolving into benzaldehyde, which then couples with aniline in the next step to yield the corresponding imine. Finally, cerium-coordinated superoxide species abstract hydrogen from the Au surface, regenerating the catalyst surface.

CeO 2 immobilized on magnetic core-shell microparticles for one-pot synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohols and anilines: Support effects for activity and stability. J Colloid Interface Sci 2019; 538:709-719. [PMID: 30503239 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcis.2018.11.092] [Citation(s) in RCA: 15] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/26/2018] [Revised: 11/21/2018] [Accepted: 11/23/2018] [Indexed: 11/21/2022]
Abstract
Four types of core-shell materials with magnetic Fe3O4 microparticles as the core were prepared through different approaches using dopamine, glucose, tetrabutyl orthotitanate (TBOT), and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the shell precursor, respectively. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was successfully immobilized onto these supports to fabricate efficient catalysts for the tandem catalytic synthesis of imines from benzyl alcohols and anilines at low temperature under air atmosphere. The as-prepared catalysts were detailedly characterized by TEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, XPS VSM, ICP, and CO2-TPD. Interestingly, these prepared catalysts showed higher catalytic activity than reported CeO2 catalysts. Most attractively, the catalyst with a shell ofnitrogen-doped-carbon derived from dopamine exhibited the best catalytic property, and outstanding stability and recyclability in the cycle experiment. According to the XPS and CO2-TPD characterization, the enhanced performance of Fe3O4@CN@CeO2 composites can be attributed to two reasons as follows: (1) the immobilization of CeO2 improved its alkalinity at low reaction temperature, and alkalinity is beneficial to promote the oxidation of alcohols to benzaldehyde, which is the rate-determining step for this tandem reaction; (2) the doped nitrogen generated Lewis basic site could satisfactorily stabilize Ce3+/Ce4+ pair of CeO2, which determined the catalytic activity and stability of CeO2 based catalysts for this tandem reaction. Moreover, the prepared catalysts could be facilely recovered from the reaction mixture with an external magnet. This work may provide a useful strategy for constructing CeO2 based catalysts for green and sustainable catalysis.

Abstract
Understanding of surface active sites (SAS) of CeO2 is crucial to its catalytic applications. In the present study, we have employed capping experiments, DFT calculations, and spectroscopic characterization to study pristine CeO2 catalyst. We find that multiple SAS coexist on the CeO2 surface: oxygen vacancies as redox sites and the coordinately unsaturated Ce cations near the oxygen vacancies and the neighboring oxygen ions as Lewis acid–base sites. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), pyridine, and benzoic acid are utilized to cap the redox sites, Lewis acid sites, and base sites, respectively. Selective capping on the redox site does not have much effect on the acid–base catalysis, and vice versa, indicating the distinct surface proximity and independent catalysis of these SAS. We draw attention to a relationship between the well-known redox sites and the surface Lewis acid and Lewis base pairs on CeO2 surface, which are responsible for driving various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Capping with pyridine, benzoic acid, and DMSO in catalytic reactions reveals the locations of surface active sites of CeO2.![]()
