Abstract
People diagnosed with cancer who undergo chemotherapy commonly encounter cognitive changes, particularly in executive functions (EFs). EFs support goal-directed behaviours, with EF deficits implicated in various neurocognitive impairments. We conducted five meta-analyses of the rodent models to investigate the impact of chemotherapy across five EF domains. A systematic search across PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO yielded 56 eligible papers. Our findings supported the clinical literature suggesting the selective impact of chemotherapy on different EF domains. Specifically, chemotherapy-treated animals performed significantly more poorly than controls in tasks assessing working memory, behavioural flexibility, and problem-solving, with no significant group differences in inhibition or attention. Subgroup analyses revealed that alkylating agents, antitumor antibiotics, and combination therapies were strongly associated with working memory deficits, whereas mitotic inhibitors were not. Rodent species, strain, age, sex, number of treatments, and time of behavioural assessment since the end of treatment did not moderate the drug effect on any assessed EF domains. To increase the generalisability and translational validity of the results, the overall reporting quality of animal studies needs to be improved with more details on randomisation, blinding, sample sizes, and criteria for animal exclusions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cognitive dysfunction has been observed consistently in a subset of breast cancer survivors. Yet the precise neurophysiological origins of cancer-related cognitive decline remain unknown. The current study assessed neural noise (1/f activity in electroencephalogram [EEG]) in breast cancer survivors as a potential contributor to observed cognitive dysfunction from pre- to post-treatment. METHODS We measured EEG in a longitudinal design during performance of the paired-click task and the revised Attention Network Test (ANT-R) to investigate pre- versus post-treatment effects of neural noise in breast cancer patients (n = 20 in paired click; n = 19 in ANT-R) compared with healthy controls (n = 32 in paired click; n = 29 in ANT-R). RESULTS In both paradigms, one sensory (paired click) and one cognitive (ANT-R), we found that neural noise was significantly elevated after treatment in patients, remaining constant from pretest to posttest in controls. In the ANT-R, patients responded more slowly than controls on invalid cuing trials. Increased neural noise was associated with poorer alerting and poorer inhibitory control of attention (as measured by behavioral network scores), particularly for patients after treatment. CONCLUSIONS The current study is the first to show a deleterious effect of breast cancer and/or cancer treatment on neural noise, pointing to alterations in the relative balance of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs, while also suggesting promising approaches for cognitive rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have indicated that apart from enhancing patient survival, chemotherapy has adverse side effects on the psychological, social, and cognitive functions of breast cancer survivors. AIMS This study was conducted to understand chemotherapy's impact on breast cancer survivors' cognitive functions. METHODS AND RESULTS Our study is a systematic review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. We searched English databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science, and Persian databases, such as Irandoc and Elmnet, using Persian keywords of cancer, breast cancer, chemotherapy, cognitive functions, executive functions, and neuropsychological functions. Two reviewers independently evaluated the full text of the articles according to predefined criteria. Among the 937 available studies, 26 were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, of which 17 (65%) were longitudinal and 9 (35%) were cross-sectional. The findings indicated a significant relationship between the use of chemotherapy and cognitive impairments, most notably attention, working and short-term memory, and executive functions. However, the studies differed in their findings regarding the long-term persistence of cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), which could be due to the wide range of tools used, different methods to measure cognitive functions, and the difference in the sample size of the studies. CONCLUSION Chemotherapy, affecting cortical and subcortical brain structures, causes a set of cognitive impairments that can lead to impairments in social responsibility acceptance, daily functioning, and quality of life of women. Therefore, rigorous and extensive research design is required to understand the causes and consequences of CRCI using standardized and sensitive measures of cognitive functions. Specifically, studies comparing the effects of different chemotherapy regimens on cognition and potential mechanisms and/or moderators of CRCI would be instrumental in designing more effective therapy regimens and evaluating the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation and supportive care programs.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have revealed both sleep alterations and prospective memory (PM) impairments in breast cancer (BC) patients. PM refers to memory of intended actions and is crucial for daily living tasks and treatment compliance. As sleep is known to favor memory consolidation, one may expect that changes in sleep quality related to BC would have an impact on PM performance. This study aimed at assessing sleep-dependent consolidation of intentions using an ecological, virtual reality-based PM task in BC patients not treated with chemotherapy. Materials and methods Thirty-seven early stages BC patients and 21 healthy controls (HC) participated in this study. PM was assessed using a virtual reality task, during which participants learnt a list of intentions and recalled them after a retention interval filled with a day awake or a night of sleep monitored by polysomnography. Sleep spindles and slow waves, brain oscillations involved in sleep-dependent memory consolidation, were quantified automatically using the Aseega software (Physip). Subjective sleep disturbances and markers of quality of life (psychological distress, fatigue, and well-being) were assessed by questionnaires. Results Greater PM performance was observed after sleep than after an equivalent period of daytime wakefulness for both groups (HC and BC). PM performance after sleep did not differ significantly between groups. Yet, BC patients reported greater sleep disturbances than HC which were related with poorer intentions retrieval, greater psychological distress, fatigue and poorer well-being. The frequency of spindles was higher and the amplitude of slow waves lower in BC patients compared to HC. However, no significant association was observed between polysomnography parameters and PM scores in the whole sample of participants. Conclusion Although subtle changes in brain oscillations involved in sleep-dependent memory consolidation were observed, these changes did not significantly impair overnight PM consolidation in BC patients. Nevertheless, poorer PM performance was associated with greater sleep complaints which in turn were related to poorer quality of life. Overall, these data suggest that sleep-dependent PM consolidation mechanisms are not altered in early stages BC patients not treated with chemotherapy. Further investigations are needed to understand the association between markers of quality of life and sleep-dependent memory consolidation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cognitive dysfunction has been observed consistently in a subset of breast cancer survivors. Yet, the precise physiological and processing origins of dysfunction remain unknown. The current study examined the utility of methods and procedures based on cognitive neuroscience to study cognitive change associated with cancer and cancer treatment. METHODS We used electroencephalogram and behavioral measures in a longitudinal design to investigate pre- versus post-treatment effects on attention performance in breast cancer patients (n = 15) compared with healthy controls (n = 24), as participants completed the revised Attention Network Test, a cognitive measure of alerting, orienting, and inhibitory control of attention. RESULTS We found no group differences in behavioral performance from pretest to posttest, but significant event-related potential effects of cancer treatment in processing cue validity: After treatment, patients revealed decreased N1 amplitude and increased P3 amplitude, suggesting a suppressed early (N1) response and an exaggerated late (P3) response to invalid cues. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that treatment-related attentional disruption begins in early sensory/perceptual processing and extends to compensatory top-down executive processes.

Abstract
Background Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a common and significant adverse effect of cancer and its therapies. However, its definition and assessment remain difficult due to limitations of currently available measurement tools. Objective This study aims to evaluate qualitative themes related to the cognitive effects of cancer to help guide development of assessments that are more specific than what is currently available. Methods We applied topic modeling and inductive qualitative content analysis to 145 public online comments related to cognitive effects of cancer. Results Topic modeling revealed 2 latent topics that we interpreted as representing internal and external factors related to cognitive effects. These findings lead us to hypothesize regarding the potential contribution of locus of control to CRCI. Content analysis suggested several major themes including symptoms, emotional/psychological impacts, coping, “chemobrain” is real, change over time, and function. There was some conceptual overlap between the 2 methods regarding internal and external factors related to patient experiences of cognitive effects. Conclusions Our findings indicate that coping mechanisms and locus of control may be important themes to include in assessments of CRCI. Future directions in this field include prospective acquisition of free-text responses to guide development of assessments that are more sensitive and specific to cognitive function in patients with cancer.

Abstract
Patients with non-central nervous system (CNS) cancer frequently report cognitive complaints, that are recurrent and affect their quality of life. In order to improve supportive care of these cognitive difficulties, it is important to identify associated factors. Sleep disturbance is a good candidate to study, as patients with non-CNS cancer frequently report sleep disorders, and sleep plays a key role in cognitive functioning. The objective of the present systematic review was to summarize the results of studies evaluating the relationship between cognition and sleep in non-CNS cancer, and to highlight the need for further studies. PubMed [Medline] and Scopus databases were screened from April to November 2020 for studies published in English evaluating the association between cognition and sleep in adults with non-CNS cancer. The characteristics and risk of bias for each of the 30 included studies have been reported. Greater cognitive complaints in patients with non-CNS cancer were related to poorer self-reported sleep quality in almost all studies (n = 22/24). By contrast, around half of the studies reported a significant association between poorer neuropsychological performances and sleep complaints (n = 5/11). The studies were found to have several limitations, such as the lack of a control group, which would have shed the light on the period of occurrence of this association (e.g. after cancer diagnosis or after cancer treatments). Our review also identified factors that may influence the relationship between cognition and sleep. Recommendations are given for improving the methodology of future studies and extending the impact of their results.

Abstract
PURPOSE Women with breast cancer have reported adverse cognitive effects following chemotherapy. Evidence is mixed on whether executive functioning is particularly impaired in women treated with chemotherapy, in part due to the wide range of tasks used to measure executive processes. We performed a systematic review of the published literature to evaluate whether some subcomponents of executive functioning are more vulnerable to impairment than others among breast cancer survivors who had been treated with chemotherapy. METHODS Studies published as of April 2017 were identified using three electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science) and a manual search of relevant reference lists. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using a checklist of predefined criteria. RESULTS Of 1280 identified articles, a total of 41 were included for review. Study findings were categorized into three primary subdomains of executive functioning: inhibition, shifting, and updating. Although there was heterogeneity in the neuropsychological measures used to assess executive functioning, tests could be grouped into the subcomponents they assessed. Inhibition appears relatively spared from the effects of chemotherapy, whereas impairments in shifting and updating are more commonly found following chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS Examination of subcomponents of executive functioning is recommended to better characterize the nature of executive dysfunction in women treated with chemotherapy. Future studies should include executive functioning tasks of varying complexity, use of multiple tasks to increase reliability, and alternative indices to capture performance, such as within-person variability.
