Abstract
Brain tumors are associated with a dismal prognosis, and the diagnosis often evokes significant psychological distress. However, the progression of emotional well-being throughout the clinical course of brain tumors remains poorly understood. This study aims to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression in brain tumor patients and to identify the risk factors associated with postoperative emotional derangement in glioma and metastatic groups seperately. Psychological conditions were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at various preoperative and postoperative time points. A total of 159 patients who underwent surgery and HADS assessment between May 2018 and November 2020 were included in the analysis, comprising 112 glioma patients and 47 metastatic brain tumor patients. After surgery, the incidence of anxiety and depression increased in both the glioma and the metastatic brain tumor group. In both groups, tumors involving the frontal lobe were associated with a significant increase in postoperative HADS depression scores, whereas involvement of other lobes did not significantly affect postoperative HADS scores. Additionally, postoperative HADS scores did not differ significantly among gliomas of different grades. Among glioma patients, univariate analysis indicated that left-sided tumors were associated with an increased risk of postoperative depression worsening. In the metastatic group, a BMI > 24 was identified as a risk factor for postoperative anxiety exacerbation. The findings from this study highlight clinical characteristics associated with a higher risk of postoperative psychological disturbance, aiding in early prevention and tailored care to improve the quality of life for patients with intracranial tumors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patient reported outcomes (PROs) in the context of Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (GKSRS) for benign brain tumor have been under-researched. This study examined changes in PROs and adjustment trajectories post-GKSRS. METHOD 50 adults (54% female) aged on average 53.18 (SD = 14.76) years with benign brain tumor were assessed 1 week before GKSRS, 1-2 weeks post-GKSRS, and at 3-month follow-up. Telephone-based questionnaires of anxiety and depressive symptoms, cognitive function, symptom burden, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were completed. RESULTS Significant improvements in HRQoL, perceived cognitive ability, anxiety, and total brain tumor symptoms were evident between pre-GKSRS and 3-month follow-up. Conversely, there was a significant short-term increase in depressive symptoms at post-GKSRS; however, levels did not differ from pre-GKSRS at follow-up. No significant changes were evident on PROs of headaches or fatigue. About half of the participants (46-51%) experienced reliable improvement in global HRQoL, and one-third (31-34%) reported improved anxiety symptoms. Increased depressive symptoms was seen in 34% of participants post-GKSRS and 18% at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS At 3 months post-GKSRS, improvements in HRQoL, anxiety, perceived cognitive ability, and total brain tumor symptoms were evident. Routine monitoring and support for pre-GKSRS anxiety and depressive symptoms post-GKSRS is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Family caregivers of people with high-grade glioma often report high rates of psychological distress, which has been attributed to the unique aspects of the disease and onerous care demands. Clinical practice guidelines advocate for caregiver support from diagnosis through to end-of-life and bereavement. Yet, research has identified that caregivers' support needs are often overlooked. AIM To explore caregivers' experiences of psychological support and perceptions of what constitutes optimal psychological support for caregivers in the context of high-grade glioma. DESIGN Qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with data analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS Eighteen current (n = 11) and bereaved (n = 7) family caregivers (73% female, aged 33-69 years) of adults with high-grade glioma participated. Interviews explored caregivers' perceptions of psychological support. RESULTS Two major themes were generated. The first theme, 'It was never about me', reflected caregivers prioritise for people with high-grade glioma to be well supported despite experiencing their own unmet psychological support needs. The second theme, 'Continuous, coordinated and personalised support', highlighted the importance of timely and tailored interventions addressing caregivers' practical, educational and emotional support needs throughout the illness journey. CONCLUSIONS Caregivers commonly prioritise the support needs of people with high-grade gliomas; yet, have their own distinct needs that vary throughout the illness. Primary care providers have a potential role in facilitating timely access to palliative care, practical support and brain tumour-specific psychological support to meet caregivers' diverse needs across the care continuum in the context of high-grade glioma.

Abstract
Purpose There is a lack of evidence regarding how patients with malignant brain tumor and their relatives experience participation in neurooncological clinical trials. Similarly, insights from the perspective of trial staff caring for this group of patients are missing. This study aims to investigate patient, relative and trial staff experiences regarding participation in clinical neurooncological trials. Methods Within a qualitative exploratory study, 29 semi-structured interviews with brain tumor patients, relatives and trial staff were conducted and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) by Braun and Clarke. A patient researcher and patient council were involved in data analysis and interpretation. Results Four themes were developed reflecting significant aspects of the trial experience: 1. "It all revolves around hope"; 2. "Trial participation: experiencing unique medical care"; 3. "Everyone's roles are changing"; 4. "Communication as a possible area of conflict". Experiencing trial participation and general medical treatment were found to be interconnected to such a degree that they were often not meaningfully distinguished by patients and relatives. Conclusion In addition to assessing traditional endpoints for patient outcomes, we recommend increased emphasis on investigating the impact of the "soft" components constituting trial participation. Due to the interconnectedness of medical treatment and trial participation, we recommend further investigation in comparison to experiences in regular care. A deeper understanding of trial participation is needed to inform improvements for patient experiences and staff satisfaction alongside medical and scientific progress.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine interrater reliability and construct validity of the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) semi-structured interview for assessing depression in adults with a primary brain tumour. Fifty adults with a primary brain tumour (mean age = 45.86, SD = 12.48) reporting at least mild distress (Distress Thermometer [DT] ≥ 4) were recruited from a multidisciplinary brain tumour clinic and administered a telephone-based cognitive screener, MADRS, Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) depression subscale and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Audiotaped interviews were transcribed and then scored by two independent raters. Interrater reliability for the MADRS total score was excellent (ICC = 0.98) and ranged from good to excellent (ICC = 0.83-0.96) for MADRS items. The MADRS total score was significantly associated with the DT, DASS depression, and GAD-7 (r = 0.50-0.76, p < 0.001), thus providing evidence of construct validity. Individuals with poorer cognitive function reported higher levels of depression. The findings provide psychometric support for the MADRS as a semi-structured interview for assessing depression after brain tumour. Further research investigating the sensitivity and specificity of the MADRS is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Treatment-related outcomes after Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (GKSRS) for benign brain tumour are well-established; yet patient reported outcomes have been largely overlooked. This study explored individuals' perspectives of their health and well-being prior to and following GKSRS. METHOD Twenty adults (65% female) aged 24-71 years with benign brain tumour were recruited from a major metropolitan hospital and assessed approximately one week prior to, two weeks after, and at three months following GKSRS. They completed telephone-based interviews focusing on general health, symptoms, and well-being. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Three major themes characterized individuals' perceptions of their health and well-being. "Understanding my Illness and Treatment" reflected individuals' efforts to make sense of their illness and symptoms to reduce ambiguity and increase sense of control. "Experiencing Gamma Knife" related to expectations of the procedure, outcomes, daily impacts, and emotional reactions. "Adjusting one's Mindset and Coping" characterised how peoples' approaches to coping with their illness were altered over time. CONCLUSIONS Coping and adjustment is highly individualistic in the context of GKSRS. Over time, most individuals were able to make sense of their illness, adjust their mindset and utilize behavioural strategies and support systems to cope with the long-term effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Ongoing access to psychosocial support is important to maintain the well-being of people with brain tumor (PwBT) and their families; yet, there is limited knowledge of psychosocial care access. This qualitative study aimed to develop an understanding of psychosocial support pathways specific to PwBT from the perspectives of Australian healthcare professionals. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 healthcare professionals working in hospital and community services supporting PwBT and their family members. Transcribed interviews were coded and analyzed thematically. RESULTS The three major themes identified were: (1) Challenges in fitting people into the care system within existing pathways; (2) Benefits of longer-term care coordination and interdisciplinary connections; and (3) Brain tumor affects the whole family. Despite established psychosocial care pathways, service access varied and lacked continuity for individuals with lower-grade glioma and benign tumors across the illness trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Healthcare professionals recognize the need for improved access to care coordination and multidisciplinary psychosocial care tailored to the varying needs of PwBT and their families.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to scope the psychological support practices of Australian health professionals providing supportive care to adults with primary brain tumor. Method Health professionals from multidisciplinary organizations and cancer support services completed an online survey focused on psychological support for people with brain tumor (PwBT) and family members, and perceived barriers or gaps in support provision. Results 107 professionals, mainly from psychology (45%), nursing (20%), and social work (10%) backgrounds, completed the survey. Scope of practice differed according to discipline, with psychologists and nurses most likely to screen for psychological distress (71%–76%), and psychologists more typically providing at least one psychological support session (78%). Psychologists were more likely to screen for cognitive impairment (31%), whereas nurses and social workers more commonly provided family‐based support (62%–73%). Psychological support was more frequently provided in the long‐term management phase (78%) than early post‐diagnosis/treatment (45%). System‐level barriers to accessing psychological support were most frequently identified, which included limited resources and funding, insufficient staff time, lengthy waitlists and costs, poor service coordination, and lack of staff with brain tumor‐specific training. Conclusions The provision of psychological support for PwBT varies according to discipline, setting and management phase. Further research on different models of psychosocial care is needed to inform strategies to address organizational and policy factors impacting professionals' scope of practice.

Abstract
Aim To illuminate the experience of an altered social context for patients with primary brain tumours living away from home while undergoing proton beam therapy. Design A descriptive, qualitative cross-sectional interview study. Methods Nineteen patients were interviewed between December 2015-August 2016, either during (N = 7) or before and after (N = 12) their proton beam therapy. A hermeneutical analysis was performed. Results Participants made adjustments to achieve control and well-being during the treatment period. The analysis also revealed two interrelated patterns that helped participants adjust: being part of the family from a distance and seeking affinity. Conclusion It is important that patients receiving treatment far from home find a way to remain a part of their family and find affinity in the altered social context. Health professionals can prepare patients for the treatment period and can implement interventions to promote well-being for both patients and their relatives.

Abstract
PURPOSE The impact of brain tumour on subjective cognitive function (SCF) has received little attention despite the implications of these perceptions for quality of life. SCF consists of two related yet distinct components, perceived cognitive impairment (PCI) and perceived cognitive abilities (PCA). This study compared the SCF of adult brain tumour survivors and healthy controls and examined demographic, illness-related, and psychological factors associated with SCF. METHOD Sixty-five adult survivors with primary brain tumour (age, 22-75 years), and 65 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited. Participants with brain tumour completed the Brief Test of Adult Cognition by Telephone, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Cognitive Function (FACT-Cog), ratings of physical symptoms, Depression Scale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-Depression), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale. Controls completed the FACT-Cog, DASS-Depression, and GAD-7. RESULTS Adult brain tumour survivors reported significantly greater PCI and lower PCA than controls, after accounting for anxiety. Higher PCI was significantly related to fatigue, pain, treatment-related side-effects, anxiety, and depression. Lower PCA was significantly associated with fatigue, pain, poorer objective cognitive function, lower education, anxiety, and depression. Anxiety uniquely accounted for 9-14% of variance in SCF. CONCLUSIONS Adult brain tumour survivors were found to experience poorer SCF than healthy controls after accounting for anxiety. SCF was related to multiple factors after brain tumour; however, an independent association with anxiety was identified. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS These findings highlight the potential value of psychological interventions targeting anxiety and cognitive effects to improve quality of survivorship after brain tumour.

Abstract
PURPOSE Research indicates that strong social ties can buffer the adverse effects of chronic illness on psychological well-being. Brain tumor typically leads to serious functional impairments that affect relationships and reduce social participation. This metasynthesis aimed to identify, appraise and integrate the findings of qualitative studies that reveal the impact of brain tumor on social networks. METHODS Four major databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO) were systematically searched from inception to September 2016 for qualitative studies that reported findings on the impact of primary brain tumor on social networks during adulthood. Twenty-one eligible studies were identified and appraised according to the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research. Key findings of these studies were integrated to form superordinate themes. RESULTS The metasynthesis revealed the core themes of: 1) Life disrupted; 2) Navigating the new reality of life; and 3) Social survivorship versus separation. CONCLUSIONS Multiple changes typically occur across the social trajectory of brain tumor, including a loss of pre-illness networks and the emergence of new ones. Understanding the barriers and facilitators for maintaining social connection may guide interventions for strengthening social networks and enhancing well-being in the context of brain tumor. Implications for rehabilitation Social networks and roles are disrupted throughout the entire trajectory of living with brain tumor Physical, cognitive and psychological factors represent barriers to social integration Barriers to social integration may be addressed by supportive care interventions Compensatory strategies, adjusting goals and expectations, educating friends and family and accepting support from others facilitate social reintegration throughout the trajectory of living with brain tumor.
