Ameloblastoma with dystrophic calcification: A case report with 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomographic images of calcification

This report presents a rare case of ameloblastoma with histopathologic and radiographic calcification, including 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images. A 22-year-old woman had hard swelling on the right mandible. Panoramic and CBCT images showed multilocular radiolucencies with internal calcification foci in the right mandible. Three-dimensional images clearly showed varying-sized radiopacities within the lesion from various angles. A histopathologic examination showed central squamous differentiation and more densely packed peripheral palisading ameloblastic cells. Many areas of keratin pearls and calcifications were also seen. Four previous reports have described 5 cases of ameloblastoma showing histopathologic calcification. This might be the first report to present the calcification of ameloblastoma on panoramic and CBCT images, especially on 3-dimensional images.

Follicular/desmoplastic hybrid ameloblastoma with radiographic features of concomitant fibro-osseous and solitary cystic lesions

We report a case of ameloblastoma radiographically suggestive of a complication of fibro-osseous and solitary cystic lesions. A 35-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for treatment, complaining of swelling in the left premolar region of the mandible. Radiological findings indicated a mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion in the region of the left mandibular canine and first premolar as well as a solitary cystic lesion in the mandibular second premolar region. Following biopsy, resection of mandible was performed under general anesthesia. Histopathologic examination identified follicular-type ameloblastoma with partial desmoplastic findings. Conventional radiography and computed tomography were not useful in indicating the relationship between the mixed and solitary cystic lesions. However, magnetic resonance imaging was instrumental in elucidating this relationship.

A basal cell maxillary ameloblastoma became obvious as an asymptomatic swelling of the left buccal sulcus and alveolar process, although a large extension into the maxillary sinus up to the nasal conchae and the orbital floor had already occurred. The painless and slow growth of the lesion, the thin bone of the upper jaws, the adjacent cavities and the vital structures are the main factors for delay in recognition and thus the potentially lethal result of a maxillary ameloblastoma. Ameloblastoma of the Maxilla: A Series of Three Cases

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive tumor of the maxilla. We reviewed several ameloblastomas of the maxilla that had been surgically removed. The English literature was reviewed to evaluate the appropriate treatment and success with these aggressive tumors.

Maxillary ameloblastoma is a tumor that can behave malignantly. There is a definite correlation between histopathologic appearance and tumor activity. The unicystic type of ameloblastoma responds well to complete resection. The treatment for an ameloblastoma of the maxilla is radical resection. Limited removal of the cyst/tumor initially is not adequate, and a secondary operation will be required. Ameloblastoma of the maxilla requires aggressive radical excision at the time of initial diagnosis.

Desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma in Malaysians

Seventeen cases are reported of desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma of the jaws observed during the years 1967-1991. There were 12 females and 5 males, and these consisted of 7 Chinese, 6 Malays, 2 Indians, 1 Sikh and 1 Kadazan. Their ages at diagnosis ranged from 21-60 years with a mean of 36.6 years. There were 10 mandibular and 7 maxillary tumours. Of these, 14 cases involved the anterior segment with extension to the premolar region in 5 cases. 60% of cases were radiologically suggestive of fibro-osseous lesions. The main mode of treatment was resection and 1 case presented with recurrence. The findings of this study were compared with those of previous reports.
