Unlocking the potential health and growth benefits of macroscopic algae for poultry

Positive impact of dietary marine sulfated polysaccharides derived from macroalgae during a necrotic enteritis challenge

Caused by the Gram-positive bacteria Clostridium perfringens, necrotic enteritis (NE) is an enteric disease with significant economic implications in broiler production. This study employed an experimental NE model involving co-infection with Eimeria maxima and C. perfringens to assess whether sulfate polysaccharides extracted from marine macroalgae could mitigate the adverse effects of NE in broilers. A total of 600 day (d)-old Ross 708 male broilers were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: NC (negative control, fed a corn-soybean meal diet); PC (positive control, NC + 15 ppm Avilamycin and 125 ppm Amprolium); AGS (Algimun® Standard, NC + Algimun added at 0.1 % of the diet); and AGH (Algimun High, NC + Algimun added at 0.2 % of the diet). Average daily feed intake and weight gain were calculated and adjusted for daily mortality on d 14, 21, 28, and 42. On d 21, four birds/pen were examined for intestinal NE lesions. On d 14, 21, and 42, serum and jejunum samples from one bird/pen were collected to measure the concentration of the biomarker calprotectin and mRNA abundance of cytokines and tight junction proteins. Data were analyzed using JMP and significance between treatments identified by LSD (P ≤ 0.05). NE lesion scores on d 21, and mortality and FCR during d 0 to 42 were lower in PC, AGS, and AGH compared to NC birds. AGS birds had the lowest levels for serum calprotectin on d 21 while PC, AGS, and AGH had lower levels than the NC group on d 42. On d 14 and d 42, mRNA abundance of CLDN1, 3, ZO1, IL1β, IFNγ, IL10, and IL12B was greater in AGS and AGH birds compared to NC. Also, AGH had a greater abundance of TNFα on d 14 and d 42 compared to NC. Further, mRNA abundance of CLDN3, ZO1, 2, OCLDN, IL1β, IL10, IL12B, IFNγ, and ANXA1 was greater in PC on d 21 compared to NC and AGS. Based on these findings, dietary supplementation of this macroalgae-derived sulfated polysaccharides yielded a similar response to an antibiotic growth promoter presenting potential as an alternative additive.

The effects of dietary seaweed inclusion on growth performance of broiler chickens: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: There has been great interest in the use of seaweed as a functional feed ingredient for poultry in the last decade. This study aimed to assess the effects of dietary seaweed inclusion on growth performance of broiler chickens by using a systematic review and meta-analysis approach. Methods: A systematic search of published research articles related to seaweed, broiler chickens, and growth performance was conducted using three online databases (Scopus, PubMed, and SciELO). Mean values, standard deviation, and sample size were extracted from each eligible study. The estimated effect size was then quantified using Hedges' g with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Data were pooled using a fixed-effect model due to the absence of heterogeneity after being pre-checked using the I2 statistic. Results: A total of six studies (nine comparisons) involving 2,257 broiler chickens were accommodated in this study. The seaweed type consisted of seaweed blend, Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, Hizikia fusiformis, and Ulva lactuca. The inclusion dose ranged from 2 to 30 g/kg, while the intervention duration ranged from 21 to 42 days. No substantial heterogeneity among studies ( I2 = 0.00%) was found for feed intake, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio. Dietary seaweed had no significant effect on feed intake (Hedges' g = 0.19; 95% CI = -0.22 to 0.60; P = 0.280). However, broiler chickens fed dietary seaweed had superior body weight gain (Hedges' g = 0.64; 95% CI = 0.22 to 1.06; P = 0.000) and preferable feed conversion ratio (Hedges' g = -0.53; 95% CI = -0.95 to -0.11; P = 0.004). Conclusions: The current investigation highlights that dietary seaweed had growth-promoting potency for broiler chickens. However, more research on this issue is still required to build more comprehensive evidence.

Seaweeds, Intact and Processed, as a Valuable Component of Poultry Feeds

Poultry production is an important area of the agricultural economy. Nowadays, there is an interest in novel sources of feed additives that will improve production performance and poultry health. As an easily available and renewable biomass rich in biologically active compounds, seaweeds can meet this demand. Different forms of seaweeds–seaweed powder from naturally occurring biomass, cultivated or waste biomass, extracted compounds, post-extraction residues or liquid extracts–may be used in poultry feeding. Inclusion of this unconventional material in the poultry nutrition can positively influence the poultry performance along with its health and enrich poultry products with active compounds, such as micro- and macroelements, polyunsaturated fatty acids and pigments. Seaweeds also reduce lipids and cholesterol in eggs. Moreover, due to their unique properties, they can serve as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters. This review presents the latest developments in the use of seaweeds in poultry nutrition, as well as its limitations.

Algal Oil as Source of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Laying Hens Nutrition: Effect on Egg Performance, Egg Quality Indices and Fatty Acid Composition of Egg Yolk Lipids

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of algal oil with very high level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3) used as fat source in the diet for laying hens, on egg yolk lipids fatty acid composition, as well as egg production and egg quality indices, in comparison with other dietary fat sources. The experiment was carried out on 168 ISA Brown hens (25 to 60 wks of age), allocated to 7 groups of 12 replicates (cages), with two birds in each cage. The experimental diets were supplemented with 2% of different fat sources, i.e. soybean oil (SO), coconut oil (CO), rapeseed oil (RO), linseed oil (LO), camelina oil (CAO), fish oil (FO), or algal oil (AO). Laying performance indices, i.e. egg production, mean egg weight, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or egg and eggshell quality parameters were not affected by used fat sources (P>0.05). Dietary fat sources significantly influenced on egg yolk lipids fatty acids composition. Thus, AO addition caused some changes in the yolk lipid profile that were favorable from the dietary perspective, i.e., increased concentration of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA (P<0.05). However, boiled eggs from hens fed a diet with AO were characterized by an inferior flavour and taste to those from other groups. In conclusion, the results of this experiment, have shown that the use of AO in the laying hens nutrition is an efficient way to increase the deposition of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) in eggs, without negative effect on egg performance, however further researches, aiming to establish optimal AO dietary level that does not adversely affect the organoleptic properties of eggs, are needed.

Seaweed Potential in the Animal Feed: A Review

Seaweed (known as marine algae) has a tradition of being part of the animal feed in the coastal areas, from ancient times. Seaweeds, are mixed with animal feed, because when consumed alone can have negative impact on animals. Thus, seaweeds are very rich in useful metabolites (pigments, carotenoids, phlorotannins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, agar, alginate and carrageenan) and minerals (iodine, zinc, sodium, calcium, manganese, iron, selenium), being considered as a natural source of additives that can substitute the antibiotic usage in various animals. In this review, we describe the nutritional values of seaweeds and the seaweed effects in the seaweed-based animal feed/supplements.
