Opponent-color detection threshold asymmetries may result from reduction of ganglion cell subpopulations

Hue opponency: chromatic valence functions, individual differences, cortical winner-take-all opponent modeling, and the relationship between spikes and sensitivity

Neural spike rate data are more restricted in range than related psychophysical data. For example, several studies suggest a compressive (roughly cube root) nonlinear relationship between wavelength-opponent spike rates in primate midbrain and color appearance in humans, two rather widely separated domains. This presents an opportunity to partially bridge a chasm between these two domains and to probe the putative nonlinearity with other psychophysical data. Here neural wavelength-opponent data are used to create cortical competition models for hue opponency. This effort led to creation of useful models of spiking neuron winner-take-all (WTA) competition and MAX selection. When fed with actual primate data, the spiking WTA models generate reasonable wavelength-opponent spike rate behaviors. An average psychophysical observer for red-green and blue-yellow opponency is curated from eight applicable studies in the refereed and dissertation literatures, with cancellation data roughly every 10 nm in 18 subjects for yellow-blue opponency and 15 subjects for red-green opponency. A direct mapping between spiking neurons with broadband wavelength sensitivity and human psychophysical luminance yields a power law exponent of 0.27, similar to the cube root nonlinearity. Similarly, direct mapping between the WTA model opponent spike rates and psychophysical opponent data suggests power law relationships with exponents between 0.24 and 0.41.

Reduced Discrimination in the Tritanopic Confusion Line for Congenital Color Deficiency Adults

In congenital color blindness the red–green discrimination is impaired resulting in an increased confusion between those colors with yellow. Our post-receptoral physiological mechanisms are organized in two pathways for color perception, a red–green (protanopic and deuteranopic) and a blue–yellow (tritanopic). We argue that the discrimination losses in the yellow area in congenital color vision deficiency subjects could generate a subtle loss of discriminability in the tritanopic channel considering discrepancies with yellow perception. We measured color discrimination thresholds for blue and yellow of tritanopic channel in congenital color deficiency subjects. Chromaticity thresholds were measured around a white background (0.1977 u′, 0.4689 v′ in the CIE 1976) consisting of a blue–white and white–yellow thresholds in a tritanopic color confusion line of 21 congenital colorblindness subjects (mean age = 27.7; SD = 5.6 years; 14 deuteranomalous and 7 protanomalous) and of 82 (mean age = 25.1; SD = 3.7 years) normal color vision subjects. Significant increase in the whole tritanopic axis was found for both deuteranomalous and protanomalous subjects compared to controls for the blue–white (F_2,100 = 18.80; p < 0.0001) and white–yellow (F_2,100 = 22.10; p < 0.0001) thresholds. A Principal Component Analysis (PCA) found a weighting toward to the yellow thresholds induced by deuteranomalous subjects. In conclusion, the discrimination in the tritanopic color confusion axis is significantly reduced in congenital color vision deficiency compared to normal subjects. Since yellow discrimination was impaired the balance of the blue–yellow channels is impaired justifying the increased thresholds found for blue–white discrimination. The weighting toward the yellow region of the color space with the deuteranomalous contributing to that perceptual distortion is discussed in terms of physiological mechanisms.

Sensory recoding via neural synchronization: integrating hue and luminance into chromatic brightness and saturation

If neural spike trains carry information in the frequency and timing of the spikes, then neural interactions--such as oscillatory synchronization--that alter spike frequency and timing can alter the encoded information. Using coupled oscillator theory, we show that synchronization-based processing can be used to integrate sensory information, resulting in new second-order sensory percepts signaled by the compromise frequency of the coupled system. If the signals to be coupled are nonlinearly compressed, the coupled system behaves as if it signals the product or ratio of the uncoupled signals, e.g., chromatic brightness can be signaled by the compromise frequency of coupled neurons responding to hue and luminance, and chromatic saturation can be signaled by the coupled frequency of neurons responding to hue and brightness, with a power- (Stevens's) law scaling like that observed psychophysically. These emergent properties of coupled sensory systems are intriguing because multiplicative processing and power-law scaling are fundamental aspects of sensory processing.

The role of parametric assumptions in adaptive Bayesian estimation

Variants of adaptive Bayesian procedures for estimating the 5% point on a psychometric function were studied by simulation. Bias and standard error were the criteria to evaluate performance. The results indicated a superiority of (a) uniform priors, (b) model likelihood functions that are odd symmetric about threshold and that have parameter values larger than their counterparts in the psychometric function, (c) stimulus placement at the prior mean, and (d) estimates defined as the posterior mean. Unbiasedness arises in only 10 trials, and 20 trials ensure constant standard errors. The standard error of the estimates equals 0.617 times the inverse of the square root of the number of trials. Other variants yielded bias and larger standard errors.

Perception of forbidden colors in retinally stabilized equiluminant images: an indication of softwired cortical color opponency?

In color theory and perceptual practice, two color naming combinations are forbidden-reddish greens and bluish yellows-however, when multicolored images are stabilized on the retina, their borders fade and filling-in mechanisms can create forbidden colors. The sole report of such events found that only some observers saw forbidden colors, while others saw illusory multicolored patterns. We found that when colors were equiluminant, subjects saw reddish greens, bluish yellows, or a multistable spatial color exchange (an entirely novel perceptual phenomena); when the colors were nonequiluminant, subjects saw spurious pattern formation. To make sense of color opponency violations, we created a soft-wired model of cortical color opponency (based on winner-take-all competition) whose opponency can be disabled.

Color and luminance detection and discrimination asymmetries and interactions

We investigated the nature of color and luminance processes under threshold and suprathreshold conditions in normal trichromatic observers. Detection and discrimination contours as well as threshold-vs-contrast (Tvc) functions were measured in the Derrington-Krauskopf-Lennie (DKL) color space using a masking paradigm. Such contours revealed substantial threshold asymmetries along the three cardinal axes for excursions of opposite polarity along a single axis (e.g. "red" vs "green"). The detection threshold asymmetry was significant for the "blue" and "yellow" (P < 0.05) and luminance increments and decrements (P < 0.01). For suprathreshold discrimination contours the polarity of these asymmetries reversed but remained significant for "blue" and "yellow" (P < 0.001) and luminance increments and decrements (P < 0.01). No significant differences were found between the "red" and "green" cardinal axes under either condition. The discrimination contours also indicated that suprathreshold performance had variable masking along the different axes. A characteristic Tvc curve was found in all cardinal directions except "yellow". The Tvc for "yellow" differed from the other cardinal directions by showing no masking after the initial facilitation and by giving a greater saturating response as a function of contrast. We considered whether the state of retinal adaptation had any role in producing the asymmetries.

Cortical simple cells can extract achromatic information from the multiplexed chromatic and achromatic signals in the parvocellular pathway

P cells, which carry both achromatic and chromatic information, are largely responsible for achromatic acuity and contrast sensitivity. The P cell achromatic information must be separated from the chromatic information to be useful. Cortical simple cells are well suited to the extraction of achromatic information by spatial bandpass filtering. Bandpass filtering of Type I P cells by cortical simple cells yields an achromatic signal with a residual chromatic response. The bandpass model makes predictions in accord with existing physiological data and explains the role of a heretofore puzzling class of cortical cells, which have bandpass tuning for both achromatic and chromatic modulations. The model is shown to be related to a previously postulated class of ideal detectors. Finally, the model is used to make a number of physiological and psychophysical predictions.
