Relationship between the religious attitudes of women with gynecologic cancer and mental adjustment to cancer

Lived experiences of gynaecological cancer survivors in Oman: a qualitative study

OBJECTIVE

A significant number of patients with gynaecological cancers survive their disease and are considered cured. However, the diagnosis of cancer and its treatment can affect quality of life adversely. We sought to explore the lived experiences of women surviving gynaecological cancers in Oman.

METHODS

Omani patients with gynaecological cancers who had completed their treatment more than 1 year ago and were following up in the medical oncology clinic at a major cancer centre in Oman were interviewed. A qualitative study design was employed using face-to-face semistructured individual interviews. To prevent recall bias, women diagnosed with cancer within the past 5 years only were included. The sample size was determined using data saturation, where data collection revealed no new information. All interviews were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were analysed using a standardised thematic analysis approach.

RESULTS

Four main themes emerged: 'Beliefs and attitudes'; 'Living with Treatment Complications'; 'Living with cancer' and 'Coping with the Cancer Journey'.

CONCLUSIONS

The diagnosis of cancer had a profound effect on the lives of women with gynaecological cancer. The diagnosis negatively affected their lives throughout their cancer journey due to social role changes, fertility and sexual problems. Religion and social support played major roles in coping with the disease. This is the first study describing the lived experiences of Muslim and Omani survivors of gynaecological cancers and may help to determine their survivorship needs.

Experiences Relating to Sexual Well-Being Among Muslim Gynecological Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies

Background

Gynecological cancers are one of the most important threats to women's health worldwide. The objective of this review is to synthesize and present the best available evidence on the experiences relating to sexual well-being among Muslim women with gynecological cancer.

Methods

The databases searched included Web of Science, Scopus, SID, Google Scholar, ProQuest, MEDLINE, and CINAHL from the inception of the database until August 2021. The review was guided by the JBI methodology used for qualitative systematic reviews. Findings were collated using the meta-aggregation method through JBI SUMARI.

Results

Eight studies involving Muslim women cancer survivors were included in the review. Meta-synthesis of the eight included studies generated 59 findings, which were organized into 14 categories and combined into four synthesized findings.

Conclusions

Gynecological cancer and its treatment results in numerous challenges with sexual well-being among Muslim women cancer survivors. Providing information about sexual activity following gynecological cancer, better communication from health care professionals, and support from the husband is essential to overcome the struggle with intimacy and femininity experienced by the women, thus improving the sexual quality of life of Muslim gynecological cancer survivors.

Religious attitude, spirituality and mental adjustment in Turkish geriatric oncology patients

AIM

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between religious attitudes and spirituality levels of geriatric oncology patients and their psychological reactions to cancer.

METHODS

The sample consisted of 261 geriatric oncology patients who were inpatients in oncology and hematology clinics of a university hospital. The research was conducted between 30 July 2020 and 26 January 2022. Data were collected using the Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) scale, the Ok-Religious Attitude (ORA) scale, and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-SP) scale. The effect of the ORA scale and FACIT-SP scale scores on the MAC scale were analyzed using path analysis.

RESULTS

A positive relationship was found between Spiritual Well-Being and Fighting (β = 0.028, p < 0.001) and Anxious Anticipation (β = 0.024, p < 0.001); a negative relationship was found between Fatalism (β = -0.023, p < 0.001), Helplessness/Hopelessness (β = -0.04, p < 0.001) and Denial/Avoidance (β = -0.026; p < 0.001). A positive relationship was found between Religious Attitude and Fighting Spirit (β = 0.154, p = 0.009) and Anxious Anticipation (β = 0.231, p < 0.001), while a negative relationship was found between Religious Attitude and Despair/Hopelessness (β = -0.413, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Patients' religious attitudes and spiritual well-being levels affected their psychological reactions to cancer, increased their "fighting spirit" and their "anxious preoccupation" about the disease, and decreased their helplessness/hopelessness, fatalism, denial and avoidance.

Spiritual needs and their associated psychosocial factors among women with breast cancer: A cross-sectional study

AIMS

Guided by the biopsychosocial-spiritual model, this study aimed to evaluate the spiritual needs of Chinese women with breast cancer and explored factors associated with those spiritual needs.

DESIGN

This study has a cross-sectional design.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study involved 228 breast cancer patients in China, between May 2019 and July 2019. Data were collected using the general information form, the Spiritual Needs Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Data were analysed by Spearman correlation analysis, univariate analysis and multiple linear regression, and a structural equation model (SEM) was constructed by maximum likelihood estimation.

RESULTS

There was a slightly higher average score for spiritual needs. Of the five dimensions of spiritual needs, those with the highest and lowest levels were 'meaning and purpose' and 'relationship with transcendence' respectively. Religion, time since confirmed diagnosis and education level were related to spiritual needs. The proposed model linking spiritual needs perceived social support, anxiety, and depression revealed a satisfactory fit to the data. Specifically, a higher level of social support predicted lower levels of anxiety and depression, which in turn predicted stronger spiritual needs.

CONCLUSIONS

The spiritual needs of breast cancer patients were associated with individual characteristics and psychosocial elements. Patients' spiritual needs should therefore be effectively evaluated, especially the needs of those who are not religious. Furthermore, comprehensive, needs-tailored interventions that incorporate spiritual, biological, psychological and social support should be formulated.

IMPACT

Nurses should become more aware of the spiritual needs of breast cancer patients, incorporate a spiritual focus into their care and develop comprehensive needs tailored to their characteristics as well as interventions based on biopsychosocial factors.

Religiosity, Emotions and Health: The Role of Trust/Mistrust in God in People Affected by Cancer

Trust in God implies the conviction that God looks after a person’s own interests. The first evidence of a relationship between this construct and people’s psychological and emotional health dates back several centuries. However, the literature on this is limited, especially for people with physical health conditions, such as cancer. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to test the relationships between trust/mistrust in God, social support and emotions in people affected by cancer. The sample consisted of 177 women and men in Spain diagnosed with cancer. The instruments used were the Trust/Mistrust in God Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were performed to compare several explanatory models for the dependent variables: positive and negative emotions. The results show significant relationships between all variables. It was observed that, when trust/mistrust in God is included in the model, only mistrust in God predicts both types of emotions. In addition, both social support and some sociodemographic variables help to predict the dependent variables. This study shows that valuing the religiosity and spirituality of oncology patients in healthcare settings can have a significant positive impact on the health of these individuals. Moreover, it represents an important approach to the study of trust/mistrust in God in the context of a traditionally Catholic country.
