Effects of dietary CP and amino acid restriction on the growth dynamics of organs and body components in entire male, castrated and female pigs

Effect of Immunocastration and Diet on Growth Performance, Serum Metabolites and Sex Hormones, Reproductive Organ Development and Carcass Quality of Heavy Gilts

It is desirable to increase fatness in gilts destined for Teruel dry-cured ham production. A total of 192 Duroc × (Landrace × Large White) gilts of 40.3 ± 4.80 kg body weight (BW) were used to assess the impact of immunocastration and feeding on growth performance, serum metabolites and sex hormones, reproductive organ development, and carcass quality. Six treatments were arranged factorially (2 × 3) with two types of gilt (entire gilts (EG) vs. immunocastrated gilts (IG)) and three experimental diets (control vs. high energy vs. low crude protein and amino acids) provided from 76 to 134 kg BW (n = 4 per treatment, being the replicate the pen with eight pigs). Immunocastration was carried out at 58 and 77 kg BW. The IG grew faster and showed lighter reproductive tracts and greater fatness than EG. The experimental feeds had limited effect on carcass quality, but the high-energy diet improved gain-to-feed ratio and the low-protein and -amino-acids diet did not impair growth performance. In conclusion, immunocastration was a better strategy than the tested diets to increase the fatness of gilts intended for Teruel dry-cured ham, although increasing energy or decreasing crude protein and amino acid levels in the diet could be beneficial strategies for pig farmers.

Evolution of viscera and muscle fractional protein synthesis rate in lean meat selected hybrids and castrated Duroc pigs fed under moderate crude protein restriction

Differences in producing performance and organoleptic meat characteristics among pig genotypes and/or producing types are widely known. These parameters are also subjected to the animal's development, feeding and management. Detailed knowledge of the effects of production phase (PP), pig producing type (PT), dietary protein availability and their interactions on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and protein metabolism is essential information to improve precision feeding techniques. The experiment was a 2 (PP) × 2 (PT) × 2 (diet) factorial design conducted with 32 male pigs, 16 entire F2 pigs progeny of Pietrain sires and Duroc × Landrace dams, and 16 castrated purebred Durocs belonging to two production phases (growing: 29.5 ± 3.19 v. fattening: 88.6 ± 6.26 kg BW), and assigned to one of two dietary CP levels, either standard (SP: 17% in growing and 15% in fattening) or low (LP: 15% in growing and 13% in fattening). Viscera and muscle fractional protein synthesis rates (FSRs; %/day) were conducted through a single infusion of 15% L-[ring-²H₅]-phenylalanine, with subsequent blood sampling from 12 to 40 min, and sample collection of liver, duodenum, biceps femoris and longissimus dorsi skeletal muscles after sacrifice. Fattening animals acquired a greater feed ingestion capacity, average daily gain (P < 0.01) and apparent ileal digestibility, whereas growing pigs showed higher FSRs in both viscera (duodenum and liver) and in longissimus dorsi. F2 pigs showed higher average daily gain, nitrogen retention rates and FSR in liver and longissimus dorsi (P < 0.01). Nevertheless, apparent ileal digestibility in all essential amino acids was lower in F2 compared with Duroc pigs (P < 0.05). Protein metabolism was barely influenced by dietary CP content, although animals fed LP registered the lowest apparent ileal digestibility for CP and also for most of the essential amino acids compared with SP-fed pigs. This information may reveal differences in amino acid requirements between both PTs, with Duroc pigs receiving excess of dietary amino acids.

Investigating the potential for genetic improvement of nitrogen and phosphorus efficiency in a Swiss large white pig population using chemical analysis

Pig production contributes to environmental pollution through excretion of phosphorus and nitrogenous compounds. European pig production requires annual imports of currently 36 million tons of soya bean, because domestic plant protein sources often do not meet the required protein quality. Most of the mineral phosphate sources are also imported. It is therefore desirable to improve nutrient deposition efficiency through selective breeding, that is to realise similar growth rates and carcass compositions as currently achieved but with a lower intake of dietary crude protein or phosphate. For a preliminary evaluation of the potential of selecting for increased nutrient deposition efficiency, we estimated genetic parameters for nitrogen and phosphorus efficiencies in a Swiss Large White pig population including 294 individuals. Nutrient efficiency phenotypes were obtained from wet‐chemistry analyses of pigs of various live weights. Heritability of nitrogen efficiency was estimated at 41%. Heritability of phosphorus efficiency was very low (0.3%), but positive genetic correlations with nitrogen efficiency suggest that breeding for nitrogen efficiency would positively affect phosphorus efficiency. Further studies are needed to improve the quality of estimates and to obtain accurate high‐throughput measures of nutrient efficiency to be implemented on farms.
