Abstract
Ion mobility coupled with mass spectrometry was proven to be an efficient way to characterize complex mixtures such as petroleum samples. However, the identification of isomeric species is difficult owing to the molecular complexity of petroleum and no availability of standard molecules. This paper proposes a new simple indicator to estimate the isomeric content of highly complex mixtures. This indicator is based on the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the extracted ion mobility peak measured in millisecond or square angstrom that is corrected for instrumental factors such as ion diffusion. This value can be easily obtained without precisely identifying the number of isomeric species under the ion mobility peaks. Considering the Boduszynski model, the ion mobility profile for a particular elemental composition is expected to be a continuum of various isomeric species. The drift time-dependent fragmentation profile was studied and confirmed this hypothesis, a continuous evolution of the fragmentation profile showing that the larger alkyl chain species were detected at higher drift time values. This new indicator was proven to be a fast and efficient method to compare vacuum gas oils for which no difference was found using other analytical techniques. Graphical Abstract ᅟ.

Abstract
In vivo microdialysis sampling was coupled to capillary liquid chromatography (LC)/electrospray ionization quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry (MS) to monitor [Met]enkephalin and [Leu]enkephalin in the striatum of anesthetized and freely-moving rats. The LC system utilized a high-pressure pump to load 2.5 microl samples and desalt the 25 microm i.d. by 2 cm long column in 12 min. Samples were eluted with a separate pump at approximately 100 nl min(-1). A rapid gradient effectively separated the endogenous neuropeptides in 4 min. A comparison was made for operating the mass spectrometer in the MS2 and MS3 modes for detection of the peptides. In standard solutions, the detection limits were similar at 1-2 pM (2-4 amol injected); however, the reproducibility was improved with MS3 as the relative standard deviation was <5% compared with 20% for MS2 for 60 pM samples. For dialysate solutions, reconstructed ion chromatograms and tandem mass spectra had much higher signal-to-noise ratios in the MS3 mode, resulting in more confident detection at in vivo concentrations. The method was successfully used to monitor the peptides under basal conditions and with stimulation of peptide secretion by infusion of elevated K+ concentration.

Abstract
The automated acquisition of the product ion spectra of all precursor ions in a selected mass range by using a magnetic sector/orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight (oa-TOF) tandem mass spectrometer for the characterization of complex petroleum mixtures is reported. Product ion spectra are obtained by rapid oa-TOF data acquisition and simultaneous scanning of the magnet. An analog signal generator is used for the scanning of the magnet. Slow magnet scanning rates permit the accurate profiling of precursor ion peaks and the acquisition of product ion spectra for all isobaric ion species. The ability of the instrument to perform both high- and low-energy collisional activation experiments provides access to a large number of dissociation pathways useful for the characterization of precursor ions. Examples are given that illustrate the capability of the method for the characterization of representative petroleum mixtures. The structural information obtained by the automated MS/MS experiment is used in combination with high-resolution accurate mass measurement results to characterize unknown components in a polar extract of a refinery product. The exhaustive mapping of all precursor ions in representative naphtha and middle-distillate fractions is presented. Sets of isobaric ion species are separated and their structures are identified by interpretation from first principles or by comparison with standard 70-eV EI libraries of spectra. The utility of the method increases with the complexity of the samples.

Abstract
High-energy (HE) and low-energy (LE) collisionally activated decompositions of octaethylporphyrin (OEP) and its metal complexes (ZnOEP and CuOEP) depend on whether the precursor is produced by electrospray ionization as protonated molecules or by fast atom bombardment as radical cations or protonated molecules. LE activation leads to such simple product-ion spectra that a complete picture of fragmentation emerges only after nine stages of tandem mass spectrometry (MS). HE activation, on the other hand, gives product-ion spectra that afford an integrated view of all the decomposition channels in a single MS/MS experiment. These results are the basis of a recommendation that OEP is an appropriate model compound for investigating energy effects in the collisional activation of organic and bioorganic molecule ions.
