Abstract
The improvement and regulation of catalytic performance of nanozyme have long been pursued with sustained efforts. Herein, gold nanoparticles (S-CDs/AuNPs) with weak peroxidase-like (POD) activity were synthesized by Au-S bond using a sulfur doped carbon dots (S-CDs) as reducing agent and stabilizer. However, methylmercury (MeHg+) could selectively and sensitively regulate the POD-like activity of S-CDs/AuNPs. The catalytic activity of S-CDs/AuNPs was significantly activated with the addition of MeHg+, resulting in a significant enhancement of electromagnetic fields to present an obvious SERS signal. More intriguingly, the introduction of ochratoxin A (OTA) could simultaneously turn off the UV-vis absorbance signals and the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal. Based on these findings, a selective colorimetric-SERS dual-mode OTA detection strategy was established with gold amalgamation (Au@HgNPs) as the probe, and the low limit of detection (LOD) of OTA was 0.29 µgL-1 (Colorimetric) and 0.16 µgL-1 (SERS), respectively, with good recoveries from 95.9 to 104.0% (Colorimetric) and from 96.7 to 108.9% (SERS), respectively. The work paves a new way to design nanozyme-based colorimetric and SERS protocol for traces OTA residues analysis in foodstuff analysis.

Abstract
Rhodamine-based chemosensors have sparked considerable interest in recent years due to their remarkable photophysical properties, which include high absorption coefficients, exceptional quantum yields, improved photostability, and significant red shifts. This article presents an overview of the diverse fluorometric, and colorimetric sensors produced from rhodamine, as well as their applications in a wide range of fields. The ability of rhodamine-based chemosensors to detect a wide range of metal ions, including Hg+2, Al3+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Cd2+, Sn4+, Zn2+, and Pb2+, is one of their major advantages. Other applications of these sensors include dual analytes, multianalytes, and relay recognition of dual analytes. Rhodamine-based probes can also detect noble metal ions such as Au3+, Ag+, and Pt2+. They have been used to detect pH, biological species, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, anions, and nerve agents in addition to metal ions. The probes have been engineered to undergo colorimetric or fluorometric changes upon binding to specific analytes, rendering them highly selective and sensitive by ring-opening via different mechanisms such as Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET), Chelation Enhanced Fluorescence (CHEF), Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT), and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET). For improved sensing performance, light-harvesting dendritic systems based on rhodamine conjugates has also been explored for enhanced sensing performance. These dendritic arrangements permit the incorporation of numerous rhodamine units, resulting in an improvement in signal amplification and sensitivity. The probes have been utilised extensively for imaging biological samples, including imaging of living cells, and for environmental research. Moreover, they have been combined into logic gates for the construction of molecular computing systems. The usage of rhodamine-based chemosensors has created significant potential in a range of disciplines, including biological and environmental sensing as well as logic gate applications. This study focuses on the work published between 2012 and 2021 and emphasises the enormous research and development potential of these probes.

Abstract
The pollution caused by mercury ions (Hg2+) poses a potential threat to public health. Therefore, monitoring Hg2+ concentration in the environment is necessary and significant. In this work, a naphthalimide functionalized fluoran dye NAF has been prepared, which shows a new red-shift in emission at 550 nm with the maximum intensity in a mixture of water-CH3CN (v/v = 7/3) due to aggregating induced emission (AIE) effect. Meanwhile, NAF can be employed as a Hg2+ ions sensor, which displays a selective and sensitive response to Hg2+ ions by the reduced fluorescence of naphthalimide fluorophore and increased fluorescence of fluoran group, respectively, showing ratiometric fluorescence signal changes with more than 65-fold emission intensity ratio increase and naked eyes visible color change. In addition, the response time is fast (within 1 min) and the sensing can be conducted in a wide pH range (4.0-9.0). Moreover, the detection limit has been evaluated to be 5.5 nM. The sensing mechanism may be attributed to the formation of a π-extended conjugated system due to the Hg2+ ions-induced conversion of spironolactone to the ring-opened form, partially accompanied by the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. Significantly, NAF exhibits suitable cytotoxicity to living HeLa cells, which allows it to be utilized for ratiometric imaging of Hg2+ ions assisted by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
Surface modification of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (N, S-CDs) were performed using cysteine and polyethylenimine as raw materials. The prepared N, S-CDs exhibited excitation-independent in the range of 300-380 nm. Furthermore, mercury(II) ions (Hg2+) can effectively quench the fluorescence intensity of the N, S-CDs. Based on this, we developed a fluorescence sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity to detect Hg2+. Under optimized conditions, the sensor showed good linearity in the range of 0-500 nM, and the limit of detection is 9.2 nM. Further, the sensor showed high sensitivity to Hg2+ in lake water and rice samples. The recovery of the Hg2+ in lake water and rice samples ranged between 98.2 % and 109.5 % with a relative standard deviation below 5.8 %. With outstanding sensitivity and selectivity, the fluorescence sensor provides a promising platform for monitoring Hg2+ in real samples.

Abstract
Herein, we developed a class of functionalized silicon nanoparticles (F-SiNPs) bio-probes named thiol-conjugated F-SiNPs. They combine excellent biocompatibility with small dimensions (<10 nm) and biological usefulness with sustained and robust fluorescence (3.32% photoluminescent quantum yield). Identifying 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA), which lowers the quantity of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain, and mercury (Hg2+) was a crucially important step since their excessive levels are a sign of several disorders. Using F-SiNPs as a fluorescent bio-probe, we provided an "off-on" technique for sensitively and selectively determining Hg2+ and 3-MPA in this study. The 3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyl (dimethoxymethylsilane) and basic fuchsin as precursors were hydrothermally treated to produce the F-SiNPs exhibiting green fluorescence. Our results suggest that Hg2+ reduced the fluorescence of F-SiNPs because of strong ionic interactions and metal-ligand binding among many thiols and carboxyl groupings at the surface of Hg2+ and F-SiNPs. Additionally, the resultants demonstrated that after being quenched by Hg2+, the produced F-SiNPs led to the distinctive "off-on" response to 3-MPA. Moreover, the method could detect Hg2+ and 3-MPA with limits of detection of 0.065 μM and 0.017 μM, respectively. The technique employed is quick, easy, affordable, and environmentally friendly. The sensing platform has successfully determined Hg2+ and 3-MPA in urine, water, and human serum samples.

Abstract
In the last century, industrial activities increased and caused multiple health problems for humans and animals. At this moment, heavy metals are considered the most harmful substances for their effects on organisms and humans. The impact of these toxic metals, which have no biological role, poses a considerable threat and is associated with several health problems. Heavy metals can interfere with metabolic processes and can sometimes act as pseudo-elements. The zebrafish is an animal model progressively used to expose the toxic effects of diverse compounds and to find treatments for different devastating diseases that human beings are currently facing. This review aims to analyse and discuss the value of zebrafish as animal models used in neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly in terms of the benefits of animal models and the limitations that exist.

Abstract
An ecofriendly and cost effective green method has been used for the synthesis of recyclable, high functional nanoparticles. Bimetallic nanoparticles (BmNPs), Cu-Ag, have been synthesized using beetroot extract as reducing and capping agent. Formation of BmNPs was initially confirmed by UV-visible analysis, having distinct peaks of Ag at 429 nm and Cu at 628 nm. FTIR analysis also confirmed the association of bioactive phytochemicals with Cu-Ag nanoparticles. Crystallinity and morphology of BmNPs was determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX). The size of spherical shape Cu-Ag BmNPs was found to be 75.58 nm and EDAX studies confirmed the percent elemental composition of Cu and Ag in synthesized nanocatalyst. Results of different analysis provided supported evidences regarding the formation of BmNPs. Catalytic potential of BmNPs was tested for the degradation of rhodamine B (Rh-B), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes. Cu-Ag BmNPs exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for the degradation of selected organic dyes and percent degradation was recorded more than 90% for each dye. In addition, antiradical property of BmNPs was tested employing DPPH● and ABTS●+ assays and it was found to be promising. Synthesized BmNPs also exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium and Bacillus subtilis. Recyclability of nanoparticles was also evaluated and recovery from dye degradation reaction mixture was successfully achieved. The recovered nanoparticles exhibited same catalytic potential for the degradation of Rh-B. The objective of the current study was to synthesize BmNPs Cu-Ag employing a cost effective green method having promising catalytic, antiradical and antimicrobial potential. Further, BmNPs were reused after recovery from catalytic reactions, proving that BmNPs can be recycled having the same efficiency as that of a freshly prepared Cu-Ag BmNPs.

Abstract
Rhodamines gain sustained attention owing to their great potential for probe design applications. Herein, the facile preparation of a new pyridyl functionalized rhodamine dye PR is reported, which has stable fluorescence signal in water with maximum emission peak at 594 nm and Stokes shift of 81 nm. Based on dye PR, a new fluorescent probe PRHg has been developed by modifying the spirolactone of PR with hydrazine hydrate so as to produce spirolactam recognizing group for sensing of Hg2+. PRHg exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ in water/ethanol (v/v = 4/1, pH = 7.0) by a specific Hg2+-binding promoted spirolactam ring opening and hydrolyzing process. And, the detection limit for Hg2+ is evaluated to be 8.5 nM. Besides, the probe can respond to Hg2+ within 40 min and over a wide pH range from 4.0 to 10.0. Moreover, PRHg (40 µM) performs low cytotoxicity to HeLa cells (over 91.0 % cell survival rate), which allows the probe to be employed for tracing intracellular Hg2+ by fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
To develop efficient tools for monitoring toxicant Hg2+ in aqueous solution attracts great attention because the abnormal distribution of Hg2+ in environment poses great threat to human health. We here report the preparation of a novel quinoline-rhodamine hybrid fluorescent probe P7RHg for ratiometricly sensing of Hg2+ in water, with a spirolactam-thiosemicarbazide reaction group. Upon treatment by Hg2+, the ratio of fluorescence intensity (F600/F460) exhibits nearly 90-fold enhancement, presenting two well-resolved emission peaks (140 nm). Meanwhile, the specific Hg2+-induced desulfurization provides probe P7RHg an excellent selectivity to Hg2+, with a detection limit of 8.6 nM. Moreover, the low cytotoxicity allows P7RHg to be employed for tracing Hg2+ in living cells by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract
A kind of nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was facilely fabricated from polyethyleneimine and anhydrous citric acid, and which was adopted to develop a neoteric "on-off" and "off-on" fluorescent sensor for rapidly and efficiently sensing Hg2+ and I-. The fluorescence of N-CDs was notably quenched (off) in the existence of Hg2+ derived from strong interaction and the electron transfer between N-CDs and Hg2+, while the quenched fluorescence of the N-CDs and Hg2+ system was strikingly regained by addition of I- (on) resulted from the separation of N-CDs and Hg2+ due to the higher binding preference between Hg2+ and I-. Under optimal conditions, the linear detection ranges were 0.01-20 μM for Hg2+ and 0.025-7 μM for I-, respectively. Meanwhile, the detection limits could be down to 3.3 nM for Hg2+ and 8.5 nM for I-, respectively. Satisfied recoveries had also been gained for measuring Hg2+ and I- in practical water samples. The constructed "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor provided a simple, rapid, robust and reliable platform for detecting Hg2+ and I- in environmental applications.

Abstract
In this paper, carbon quantum dots (N-S-CDs) containing sulfur and nitrogen were synthesized using citric acid and thiourea. The average particle size of N-S-CDs is 8 nm. The N-S-CDs surface contains various of functional groups, which has good water solubility. The fluorescence quantum yield of N-S-CDs is as high as 36.8%. N-S-CDs emits strong blue fluorescence in aqueous solution and has good photostability in neutral and alkaline NaCl solution. N-S-CDs has unique selectivity and high sensitivity to Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions, and the lowest detection limits are 1.4 μM and 0.16 μM, respectively. Under the interference of other metal ions, Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions can still effectively and stably quench the fluorescence of N-S-CDs. In addition, in the detection of actual samples, N-S-CDs can effectively detect Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions in tap water and lake water.

Abstract
Electrochemical and spectral studies of benzylidenerhodanine (BR) were performed in order to develop new sensors for heavy metals (HMs) based on chemically modified electrodes (CMEs). CMEs were obtained by cycling and by controlled potential electrolysis at different potentials and charges. Film formation was demonstrated by recording the CV curves of CMEs in transfer solutions containing ferrocene in 0.1 M TBAP/CH3CN. BR-CMEs were used for the analysis of HMs. Samples of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), and Hg(II), each possessing concentrations between 10−7 and 10−5 M, were analyzed by using CMEs prepared in different conditions. The most intense signal was obtained for the Pb(II) ion. These BR-CMEs can be used for the analysis of Pb(II) in monitored waters. An electrochemical study was performed at different concentrations of BR in 0.1 M TBAP/CH3CN on a glassy carbon electrode by differential pulse voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and rotating disk electrode voltammetry. The complexation ratio in the homogeneous solution has been established by the Mollard method in acetonitrile solutions.

Abstract
A novel valine-based isocyanonaphthalene (NpI) was designed and synthesized by using an easy method and enabled the selective fluorescence detection of Hg2+. The chemodosimeter can display an immediate turn-on fluorescence response (500-fold) towards target metal ions upon the Hg2+-mediated conversion of isocyano to amino within NpI. Based on this specific reaction, the fluorescence-enhancement probe revealed a high sensitivity toward Hg2+ over other common metal ions and exhibited excellent aqueous solubility, good antijamming capability, high sensitivity (detection limit: 14.2 nM), and real-time detection. The response mechanism of NpI was supported by NMR spectroscopy, MS analysis and DFT theoretical calculation using various techniques. Moreover, a dipeptidomimetic NpI probe was successfully applied to visualize intracellular Hg2+ in living cells and monitor Hg2+ in real water samples with good recoveries and small relative standard deviations.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 pollution is one of the most critical issues of food safety and has been categorized as a group I carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Aflatoxin B1 exists in various foods and feedstuff products and can be produced and contaminate food products in all processes, including growth, harvest, storage, or processing. Therefore, it is of great value for detecting and on-site monitoring aflatoxin B1. Aptamers are short single-stranded DNA or RNA obtained from the nucleic acid molecular library through SELEX. With advantages of high specificity, large affinity, and easy modification, aptasensors have become popular in a wide range of promising applications. This review focuses on recent advances on fluorescent aptamer sensors for the detection of aflatoxin B1, including their design strategies, working mechanisms, and applications to on-site detection. Finally, the current challenges and prospects are discussed.

Abstract
A new Schiff base probe (QT) consisting of 8-aminoquinoline (Q) and thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (T) moieties has been synthesized. QT undergoes chelation-enhanced fluorescence quenching when exposed to Hg2+ due to coordination by the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of QT thus forming a facile "turn-off" sensor. The formation of the chelation complex was confirmed by UV-visible absorption and emission spectral measurements, 1H NMR titration and density functional theory calculations. These studies revealed that the probe exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg2+ in the presence of other common metal ions. A low detection limit of 23.4 nM was determined and a Job plot confirmed a 2:1 stoichiometry between QT and Hg2+. The potential utility of QT as a sensor for Hg2+ ions in human HeLa cells was determined by confocal fluorescence microscopy, and its suitability for use in the field with environmental samples was tested with Whatman filter paper strips.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) causes serious health issues in its all forms. Deficiency as well as excess of copper ion (Cu2+) in human body is hazardous. A series of four compounds have been derived from carboxylated benzoic acids (benzoic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid and phthalic acid) and 4H-1,2,4 triazole-4-amine and characterized. Fluorescence detection of Hg2+ was recorded by the derivates with benzoic acid and isophthalic acid while the derivatives of terephthalic acid and phthalic acid detect Cu2+ by fluorescence "off" mode. Metal ions like Li+, Na+, K+, Zn2+, Al3+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ found not to interfere. The stoichiometry of binding is 1:1 for the benzoic acid derivative with Hg2+ while it is 1:2 for the other three derivatives. The binding constants are ca. 10-4.5 between the sensors and Hg2+ or Cu2+ and detection limits are around 10-5.5 M. DFT calculation provided optimized geometries of the sensors and confirmed the stoichiometry of binding with Hg2+/Cu2+.

Abstract
By performing a single-atom replacement within common fluorophores, we have developed a facile and general strategy to prepare a broad-spectrum class of colorimetric and fluorogenic probes for the selective detection of mercury ions in aqueous environments. Thionation of carbonyl groups from existing fluorophore cores results in a great reduction of fluorescence quantum yield and loss of fluorescence emission. The resulting thiocaged probes are efficiently desulfurized to their oxo derivatives in the presence of mercury ions, leading to pronounced changes in chromogenic and fluorogenic signals. Because these probes exhibit high selectivity, excellent sensitivity, good membrane-permeability, and rapid responses towards mercury ions, they are suitable for visualization of mercury in both aqueous and intracellular environments.

Abstract
Herein, we introduced a new chemosensor, bis-BODIPY linked-triazole based on catechol (BODIPY-OO) prepared by bridging two units of BODIPY fluorophore/triazole binding group with a catechol unit. A solution of this compound displayed 4- and 2-fold enhancements in fluorescence intensity after adding a mole equivalent amount of Ag+ and Hg2+ ions in methanol media, respectively. 1H NMR titrations of BODIPY-OO with Ag+ and Hg2+ suggested that the triazole was involved in the recognition process. BODIPY-OO showed high sensitivity toward Ag+ and Hg2+ over other metal ions with detection limits of 0.45 μM and 1 μM, respectively. It can also distinguish Hg2+ from Ag+ by addition of an EDTA. This compound can therefore be employed as practical fluorescent probe for monitoring the presence of Ag+ and Hg2+ ions. BODIPY–triazole–catechol combination serves as a “turn-on” fluorescent probe for dual detection and differentiation of Hg2+ and Ag+ ions.![]()

Abstract
Cyclic polymers have a number of unique physical properties compared with those of their linear counterparts. However, the methods for the synthesis of cyclic polymers are very limited, and some multicyclic polymers are still not accessible now. Here, we found that the five-membered cyclic structure and electron withdrawing groups make methylene in rhodanine highly active to aldehyde via highly efficient Knoevenagel reaction. Also, rhodanine can act as an initiator for anionic ring-opening polymerization of thiirane to produce cyclic polythioethers. Therefore, rhodanine can serve as both an initiator for ring-opening polymerization and a monomer in Knoevenagel polymerization. Via rhodanine-based Knoevenagel reaction, we can easily incorporate rhodanine moieties in the backbone, side chain, branched chain, etc, and correspondingly could produce cyclic structures in the backbone, side chain, branched chain, etc, via rhodanine-based anionic ring-opening polymerization. This rhodanine chemistry would provide easy access to a wide variety of complex multicyclic polymers.

Abstract
Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal with high toxicity and easy migration; it can be enriched through the food chain, and cause serious threats to the natural environment and human health. So, the development of a method that can be used to detect mercury ions (Hg2+ ) in the environment, in cells, and in organisms is very important. Here, a new 7-hydroxycoumarin-derived carbonothioate-based probe (CC-Hg) was designed and synthesized for detection of Hg2+ . After addition of Hg2+ , a large fluorescence enhancement was observed due to the formation of 7-hydroxyl, which reinforced the intramolecular charge transfer process. The CC-Hg probe had good water solubility and selectivity. Moreover, the probe was able to detect Hg2+ quantitatively over the concentration range 0-2 μM and with a detection limit of 7.9 nM. Importantly, we successfully applied the probe to detect Hg2+ in water samples, in living cells, and in zebrafish. The experimental results demonstrated its potential value in practical applications.

Abstract
In this paper, new nitrogen doped carbon dots with a high quantum yield and novel optical properties were synthesized by a simple and fast one step microwave-assisted synthesis. Citric acid monohydrate was used as a carbon source and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine as nitrogen source. The prepared N-CDs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, Raman, UV-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopies. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images revealed that the N-CDs have distinctive flake-shape morphology. The N-CDs exhibit bright blue luminescence and quenching response towards Hg2+ ions. The quenching sensitivity was investigated. The results indicate a limit of detection as low as 7.63 nM and a linear relationship over the range 0-4.2 μM. In addition, the prepared N-CDs were tested as sensor for pH in the range from 1 to 7.

Abstract
Monitoring the binding of a large fluorescently tagged molecule to a small solute by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) is rather uncommon because the binding-related change in diffusion coefficient is very small. Here, we use a high-precision variant of FCS, namely, dual-focus FCS (2fFCS), for measuring the angstrom-scale change of the hydrodynamic radius of the bilobal metal transport protein transferrin (Tf) upon binding europium ions. Applying a sequential 1:2 complexation model, we use these measurements for determining the binding constants (K). Our results show a 0.7 Å change of the protein's hydrodynamic radius upon 1:1 Tf-Eu complex formation and a second change of 1.8 Å upon subsequent binding of a second europium ion. More than one unit variation in logK indicates an intrinsic dissimilarity in metal affinity of the C- and N-lobes of Tf, which agrees well with earlier reported ensemble spectroscopy results.

Abstract
Sensing the most toxic heavy metal (mercury) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to its extreme harmfulness to both human health and the environment. Thus, we reported herein the synthesis, spectroscopic and kinetic characterization, and biological evaluation of a new thioxothiazolidin coumarin derivative (ILA92), which undergoes a desulfurization reaction induced by mercuric ions (Hg2+). This process is the origin of a selective sensing of Hg2+ ions in aqueous solution by colorimetric and fluorescent methods. Furthermore, the probe showed great potential for imaging Hg2+ in living cells.

Abstract
Detection of glutathione in human serum is of great importance for clinical diagnosis of various diseases, such as AIDS, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer disease and cancer. In this work, a new water-soluble bismacrocyclic polyamine-derived compound, namely L, which contains two molecules of 4-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxa-diazole as the fluorophores, was designed and prepared. The experiments of selectivity of L toward metal ions showed it could rapidly and sensitively detect Hg2+ with a detection limit of 27 nM. Furthermore, the cell imaging and co-staining experiments in HeLa cells demonstrated that the L-Hg2+ probe had selectivity for the Golgi apparatus to a certain degree. Moreover, it had excellent selectivity for biothiols, especially for glutathione. Finally, the probe was successfully applied to sensitively detect glutathione (GSH) in human serum and fetal bovine serum.

Abstract
Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) has been extensively used to measure equilibrium binding constants (K) or association and dissociation rates in many reversible chemical reactions across chemistry and biology. For the majority of investigated reactions, the binding constant was on the order of ∼100 M-1 , with dissociation constants faster or equal to 103 s-1 , which ensured that enough association/dissociation events occur during the typical diffusion-determined transition time of molecules through the FCS detection volume. However, complexation reactions involving metal ions and chelating ligands exhibit equilibrium constants exceeding 104 M-1 . In the present paper, we explore the applicability of FCS for measuring reaction rates of such complexation reactions, and apply it to binding of iron, europium and uranyl ions to a fluorescent chelating ligand, calcein. For this purpose, we exploit the fact that the ligand fluorescence becomes strongly quenched after binding a metal ion, which results in strong intensity fluctuations that lead to a partial correlation decay in FCS. We also present measurements for the strongly radioactive ions of 241 Am3+ , where the extreme sensitivity of FCS allows us to work with sample concentrations and volumes that exhibit close to negligible radioactivity levels. A general discussion of the applicability of FCS to the investigation of metal-ligand binding reactions concludes our paper.

Abstract
Via a specific fluorescence quenching response, organic compound L serves as an excellent probe for Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The underlying detection mechanism is proposed based on the analyses of orbital interactions between probe L and Hg2+, which is new and intrinsically different from the previously proposed one. By investigating the excitation process and the excited state deactivation process of the organometallic compound formed by L and Hg2+, two non-emissive channels, namely intermolecular electron transfer and intersystem crossing, are observed. The co-effect of the two channels leads to the significant fluorescence quenching of L. Hopefully, the newly proposed mechanism can inspire experimentalists to encapsulate the two channels into one probe to achieve accurate detection of metal ions.

Abstract
The design, development, and evaluation of an optical fibre sensor for the detection of Hg2+ in aqueous media are discussed in detail in this paper. A novel fluorescent polymeric material for Hg2+ detection, based on a coumarin derivative (acting as the fluorophore) and an azathia crown ether moiety (acting as the mercury ion receptor), has been synthesized. The fluorophore was covalently immobilized onto the fibre surface by polymerisation using the ion imprinting technique and exhibited a significant increase in fluorescence intensity in response to Hg2+ via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The sensor provided a response over a concentration range of 0-28 µM with an acceptable response rate of around 11 min and a recovery rate of around 30 min in a Tris-EDTA buffer solution. A detection limit of 0.15 µM was obtained with a possibility of improvement by changing the thickness of the polymer layer and using a more sensitive detector. High-quality performance is seen through a high selectivity for Hg2+ over other metal ions, excellent photo-stability and reversibility which was also demonstrated, making this type of sensor potentially well suited for in-situ monitoring of mercury in the environment.

Abstract
A highly specific and sensitive isothermal method for mercury detection using DNA-conjugated upconversion nanoparticles is reported. A single-stranded DNA containing thymine bases, used as the Hg2+-capturing element through the formation of thymine-Hg2+-thymine complex, is covalently attached to the NaYF4: Yb3+, Tm3+ nanoparticles. Luminescence resonance energy transfer takes place between the NaYF4: Yb3+, Tm3+ nanoparticles as donor and DNA-intercalating SYBR Green I as the acceptor upon excitation of 980 nm. The sensitivity and selectivity toward Hg2+ are enhanced using the nicking enzyme, Nt. Alwl, which leads to signal amplification. By monitoring the ratio of acceptor emission to a reference peak, the presence of Hg2+ ions are quantitatively determined with a lower detection limit of 0.14 nM, which is much lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limit of Hg2+ in drinking water.
