Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), a vital fuel precursor and solvent, is crucial for biomass refining. Herein, we report highly selective and stable PdNi nanoalloy catalysts for this deep hydrogenation process. A CO2-assisted green method was developed for the controllable synthesis of various bimetallic and monometallic catalysts. The PdNi/SBA-15 catalysts with various Pd/Ni ratios exhibited a volcano-like trend between BHMTHF yield and Pd/Ni ratio. Among all catalysts tested, Pd2Ni1/SBA-15 achieved the best performance, converting 99.0 % of HMF to BHMTHF with 96.0 % selectivity, surpassing previously reported catalysts. Additionally, the Pd2Ni1/SBA-15 catalyst maintained excellent stability even after five recycling runs. Catalyst characterizations (e. g., HAADF-STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the successful formation of the alloy structure with electron transfer between Ni and Pd, which accounts for the remarkable performance and stability of the catalyst. This work paves the way for developing highly selective and stable alloy catalysts for biomass valorization.

Abstract
Mesoporous silica materials (MSMs) produced by true liquid crystal templating (TLCT) are often considered as direct inverted replicas of the initial lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) phase. However, the predictive design of tailor-made MSMs requires the full knowledge of the TLCT process, which is still incomplete. Here, we tackle this issue by monitoring the structural evolution during the templating process by small-angle X-ray scattering, showing that after the addition of the silica source the reaction mixture is first isotropic and then an intermediary liquid crystal phase appears, which is the key to the success of the templating process, namely the formation of ordered MSMs. We analyze the structure and the formation dynamics of this intermediary phase and present a simple theoretical model, which allows us to connect the structural parameters of the initial LLC and the MSM. These results provide an enhanced understanding of the TLCT process and are an important step toward the predictable synthesis of new MSMs in the future.

Effect of Time, Temperature and Stirring Rate Used in the First Step of the Synthesis of SBA-15 on Its Application as Reductor of Tars in Tobacco Smoke. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
SBA-15 has been employed as a tobacco additive with the objective of reducing the toxic and carcinogenic components in tobacco smoke. The effect of the synthesis conditions (temperature, time, and stirring rate) on this application was studied in this paper. The SBA-15 was characterized (RDX, N2 adsorption isotherms, SEM and apparent density), mixed with the 3R4F reference tobacco, and smoked under standard conditions. The composition of the gas and condensed fractions also was analyzed. The morphology of the material plays an important role on this application and is highly influenced by the three variables studied. Long fibers show improved efficiency compared to short fibers. The tar reduction effect was improved when increasing the time of synthesis. Nevertheless, a maximum was observed with temperature (40 °C) and stirring rate (700 rpm). The optimal synthesis conditions obtained were 24 h, 40 °C and 700 rpm, yielding reductions as high as 68% for tar, 67% for nicotine, and 31% for CO. The scaling-up process has only been reported in terms of grams but never in a preindustrial scale (around 4 kg), and thus the results of this analysis show a promising material with properties and behavior similar with respect to the sample synthesized at laboratory scale.

The Effect of Temperature and Time of the Hydrothermal Treatment in the SBA-15 Synthesis Process on the Structure and Textural Properties and the Ability to Reduce the Evolution of Tars in Tobacco Smoking. Catalysts 2020. Abstract
Different SBA-15 (SBA, Santa Barbara Amorphous) materials were synthetized at different temperature and time during of the hydrothermal treatment. The obtained SBA-15 were characterized by N2 adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (DRX), and density in order to establish the influence of these variables on their properties. Mixtures of the obtained catalysts with 3R4F tobacco were prepared and smoked under the ISO 3308 conditions. Temperature of the hydrothermal treatment slightly affects the tars that evolved in the smoking process of the corresponding catalyst tobacco mixtures. Contrarily, the time of the hydrothermal treatment has a marked effect on the reductions of toxic compounds in the smoke. Developed porosity has a positive correlation with the observed tar reduction, whereas the apparent density has a negative correlation with the reduction in toxicity. Moreover, the removal of the supernatant liquors during the hydrothermal treatment does not strongly modify the properties of the materials and may represent an interesting simplification of the process.

Abstract
A hybrid catalyst consisting of Zr-doped mesoporous silica (Zr-SBA-15) supports with intergrown Cu nanoparticles was used to study the effects of a catalyst's chemical states on CO2 hydrogenation. The chemical state of the catalyst was altered by using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) or sodium metasilicate (SMS) as the silica precursor in the synthesis of the Zr-SBA-15 framework, and infiltration (Inf) or evaporation induced wetness impregnation (EIWI) as the Cu loading method. As a result, the silica precursor mainly affects the activity of the catalyst whereas the Cu loading method alters the selectivity of the products. TEOS materials exhibit a higher catalytic activity compared to SMS materials due to different Zr dispersion and bonding to the silica matrix. EIWI catalysts display selectivity for methanol formation, while the Inf ones enable methanol conversion to DME. This is correlated to a higher Zr content and lower Cu oxidation states of EIWI prepared catalysts.

Abstract
Self-sacrificial biomass-derived silica is a rising and promising approach to fabricate large metal silicates, which are practical water treatment agents ascribed for easy sedimentation and separation. However, the original biomass architecture is difficult to be maintained and utilized. Furthermore, sufficient ion diffusion pathways need to be created to satisfy massive mass transport in large bulk materials. Herein, a series of metal silicates, including cobalt silicate (CoSiOx), copper silicate, nickel silicate, iron silicate, and magnesium silicate, are synthesized from Indocalamus tessellatus leaf as the biomass-derived silica source and investigated as catalysts in sulfate-radical-based advanced oxidization processes (SR-AOPs) for the first time. Among them, CoSiOx presents an analogical sandwich structure as a leaf-derived template of micron-level size. More importantly, the interior hollow nanotubes assembled by small nanosheets provide numerous pathways for ion diffusion and remarkably promote the mass transport in such large bulk materials. Owing to the combination of the unique structure with the high reactivity of Co (II) toward peroxymonosulfate, CoSiOx exhibits excellent catalytic performance with 0.242 and 0.153 min-1 rate constants for the removal of methylene blue and phenol, respectively, which outperforms/is comparable to that of the reported nanomaterials toward organic contaminants in SR-AOPs.

Abstract
A series of alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complexes functionalized with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) moieties has been demonstrated to exhibit drastic color changes and give various distinctive nanostructures with interesting multi-stage morphological transformations from spheres to nanoplates in response to solvent conditions through the interplay of various intermolecular interactions, including hydrophilic-hydrophilic, hydrophobic-hydrophobic, Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions. These supramolecular architectures can be systematically modified and controlled through the molecular design and the variation of solvent compositions. In particular, drastic changes in color in response to solvent polarity were observed through the incorporation of the charged moieties, representing a new class of potential candidates for functional materials with sensing or imaging capabilities. This class of complexes has been studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy.
