Formation and Fate of Nitromethane in Ozone-Based Water Reuse Processes

Mechanistic Insight for Disinfection Byproduct Formation Potential of Peracetic Acid and Performic Acid in Halide-Containing Water

Peracetic acid (PAA) and performic acid (PFA) are two major peroxyacid (POA) oxidants of growing usage. This study reports the first systematic evaluation of PAA, PFA, and chlorine for their disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potential in wastewater with or without high halide (i.e., bromide or iodide) concentrations. Compared with chlorine, DBP formation by PAA and PFA was minimal in regular wastewater. However, during 24 h disinfection of saline wastewater, PAA surprisingly produced more brominated and iodinated DBPs than chlorine, while PFA effectively kept all tested DBPs at bay. To understand these phenomena, a kinetic model was developed based on the literature and an additional kinetic investigation of POA decay and DBP (e.g., bromate, iodate, and iodophenol) generation in the POA/halide systems. The results show that PFA not only oxidizes halides 4-5 times faster than PAA to the corresponding HOBr or HOI but also efficiently oxidizes HOI/IO- to IO3-, thereby mitigating iodinated DBP formation. Additionally, PFA's rapid self-decay and slow release of H2O2 limit the HOBr level over the long-term oxidation in bromide-containing water. For saline water, this paper reveals the DBP formation potential of PAA and identifies PFA as an alternative to minimize DBPs. The new kinetic model is useful to optimize oxidant selection and elucidate involved DBP chemistry.

Ozonation of Gabapentin in Water─Investigating Reaction Kinetics and Transformation Mechanisms of a Primary Amine Using Isotopically Labeled Ozone

Aliphatic amines are abundant micropollutants in wastewater treatment plant effluents. In order to mitigate such micropollutants, ozonation is one of the most commonly employed advanced treatment processes. Current research regarding ozone efficiency is heavily focusing on reaction mechanisms of different contaminant groups, including structures with amine moieties as reactive sites. This study analyzes pH-dependent reaction kinetics and pathways of gabapentin (GBP), an aliphatic primary amine with an additional carboxylic acid group. The transformation pathway was elucidated applying a novel approach using isotopically labeled ozone (18O) and quantum chemistry calculations. While the direct reaction of GBP with ozone is highly pH-dependent and slow at pH 7 (13.7 M-1 s-1), the rate constant of the deprotonated species (1.76 × 105 M-1 s-1) is comparable to those of other amine compounds. Pathway analysis based on LC-MS/MS measurements revealed that ozonation of GBP leads to the formation of a carboxylic acid group and simultaneous nitrate formation, which was also observed in the case of the aliphatic amino acid glycine. Nitrate was formed with a yield of approximately 100%. Experiments with 18O-labeled ozone demonstrated that the intermediate aldehyde does most likely not include any oxygen originating from ozone. Furthermore, quantum chemistry calculations did not provide an explanation for the C-N scission during GBP ozonation without ozone involvement, although this reaction was slightly more favorable than for respective glycine and ethylamine reactions. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of reaction mechanisms of aliphatic primary amines during wastewater ozonation.

Chloramination of Nitromethane: Incomplete Chlorination and Unexpected Substitution Reaction

Ozone is commonly used as a predisinfectant in potable water reuse treatment trains. Nitromethane was recently found as a ubiquitous ozone byproduct in wastewater, and the key intermediate toward chloropicrin during subsequent secondary disinfection of ozonated wastewater effluent with chlorine. However, many utilities have switched from free chlorine to chloramines as a secondary disinfectant. The reaction mechanism and kinetics of nitromethane transformation by chloramines, unlike those for free chlorine, are unknown. In this work, the kinetics, mechanism, and products of nitromethane chloramination were studied. The expected principal product was chloropicrin, because chloramines are commonly assumed to react similarly to, although more slowly than, free chlorine. Different molar yields of chloropicrin were observed under acidic, neutral, and basic conditions, and surprisingly, transformation products other than chloropicrin were found. Monochloronitromethane and dichloronitromethane were detected at basic pH, and the mass balance was initially poor at neutral pH. Much of the missing mass was later attributed to nitrate formation, from a newly identified pathway involving monochloramine reacting as a nucleophile rather than a halogenating agent, through a presumed SN2 mechanism. The study indicates that nitromethane chloramination, unlike chlorination, is likely to produce a range of products, whose speciation is a function of pH and reaction time.

Formation Mechanisms of Nitro Products from Transformation of Aliphatic Amines by UV/Chlorine Treatment

Formation of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts from aliphatic amines is a widespread concern owing to the serious health risks associated with them. However, the mechanisms of transforming aliphatic amines and forming nitro products in the UV/chlorine process have rarely been discussed, which are investigated in this work. Initially, secondary amines (R1R2NH) are transformed into secondary organic chloramines (R1R2NCl) via chlorination. Subsequently, radicals, such as HO• and Cl•, are found to contribute predominantly to such transformations. The rate constants at which HO•, Cl•, and Cl2•- react with R1R2NCl are (2.4-5.1) × 109, (1.5-3.8) × 109, and (1.2-6.1) × 107 M-1 s-1, respectively. Consequently, R1R2NCl are transformed into primary amines (R1NH2/R2NH2) and chlorinated primary amines (R1NHCl/R2NHCl and R1NCl2/R2NCl2) by excess chlorine. Furthermore, primarily driven by UV photolysis, chlorinated primary amines can be transformed into nitroalkanes with conversion rates of ∼10%. Dissolved oxygen and free chlorine play crucial roles in forming nitroalkanes, and post-chlorination can further form chloronitroalkanes, such as trichloronitromethane (TCNM). Radicals are involved in forming TCNM in the UV/chlorine process. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms of transforming aliphatic amines and forming nitro products using the UV/chlorine process.

Ozonation of lake water and wastewater: Identification of carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl-containing oxidation byproducts by non-target screening

Ozonation of drinking water and wastewater is accompanied by the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as low molecular weight aldehydes and ketones from the reactions of ozone with dissolved organic matter (DOM). By applying a recently developed non-target workflow, 178 carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl compounds were detected during bench-scale ozonation of two lake waters and three secondary wastewater effluent samples and full-scale ozonation of secondary treated wastewater effluent. An overlapping subset of carbonyl compounds (20%) was detected in all water types. Moreover, wastewater effluents showed a significantly higher fraction of N-containing carbonyl compounds (30%) compared to lake water (17%). All carbonyl compounds can be classified in 5 main formation trends as a function of increasing specific ozone doses. Formation trends upon ozonation and comparison of results in presence and absence of the ^•OH radical scavenger DMSO in combination with kinetic and mechanistic information allowed to elucidate potential carbonyl structures. A link between the detected carbonyl compounds and their precursors was established by ozonating six model compounds (phenol, 4-ethylphenol, 4-methoxyphenol, sorbic acid, 3-buten-2-ol and acetylacetone). About one third of the detected carbonous carbonyl compounds detected in real waters was also detected by ozonating model compounds. Evaluation of the non-target analysis data revealed the identity of 15 carbonyl compounds, including hydroxylated aldehydes and ketones (e.g. hydroxyacetone, confidence level (CL) = 1), unsaturated dicarbonyls (e.g. acrolein, CL = 1; 2-butene-1,4-dial, CL = 1; 4-oxobut-2-enoic acid, CL = 2) and also a nitrogen-containing carbonyl compound (2-oxo-propanamide, CL =1). Overall, this study shows the formation of versatile carbonous and nitrogenous carbonyl compounds upon ozonation involving ozone and ^•OH reactions. Carbonyl compounds with unknown toxicity might be formed, and it could be demonstrated that acrolein, malondialdehyde, methyl glyoxal, 2-butene-1,4-dial and 4-oxo-pentenal are degraded during biological post-treatment.

Bubbleless Air Shapes Biofilms and Facilitates Natural Organic Matter Transformation in Biological Activated Carbon

The biodegradation in the middle and downstream of slow-rate biological activated carbon (BAC) is limited by insufficient dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. In this study, a bubbleless aerated BAC (termed ABAC) process was developed by installing a hollow fiber membrane (HFM) module within a BAC filter to continuously provide aeration throughout the BAC system. The BAC filter without an HFM was termed NBAC. The laboratory-scale ABAC and NBAC systems operated continuously for 426 days using secondary sewage effluent as an influent. The DO concentrations for NBAC and ABAC were 0.78 ± 0.27 and 4.31 ± 0.44 mg/L, respectively, with the latter providing the ABAC with greater electron acceptors for biodegradation and a microbial community with better biodegradation and metabolism capacity. The biofilms in ABAC secreted 47.3% less EPS and exhibited greater electron transfer capacity than those in NBAC, resulting in enhanced contaminant degradation efficiency and long-term stability. The extra organic matter removed by ABAC included refractory substances with a low elemental ratio of oxygen to carbon (O/C) and a high elemental ratio of hydrogen to carbon (H/C). The proposed ABAC filter provides a valuable, practical example of how to modify the BAC technology to shape the microbial community, and its activity, by optimizing the ambient atmosphere.

Preferential Destruction of Micropollutants in Water through a Self-Purification Process with Dissolved Organic Carbon Polar Complexation

Removing micropollutants in real water is a scientific challenge due to primary dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and high energy consumption of current technologies. Herein, we develop a self-purification process for the preferential destruction of various micropollutants in municipal wastewater, raw drinking water, and ultrapure water with humic acid (HA) driven by the surface microelectronic field of Fe⁰-Fe_yC_z/Fe_x-GZIF-8-rGO without any additional input. It was verified that a strongly polar complex consisting of an electron-rich HA/DOC area and an electron-poor micropollutant area was formed between HA/DOC and micropollutants, promoting more electrons of micropollutants in the adsorbed complex to delocalizing to electron-rich Fe species area and be trapped by O₂, which resulted in their surface cleavage and hydrolyzation preferentially. The higher micropollutant degradation efficiency observed in real wastewaters was due to the greater complex polarity of DOC. Moreover, the electron transfer process ensured the stability of the surface microelectronic field and continuous water purification. Our findings provide a new insight into low-energy combined-micropollution water treatment.

Detection and Stability of Cyanogen Bromide and Cyanogen Iodide in Drinking Water

This study systematically summarized the factors affecting the stability of CNXs, providing a reference for better control and elimination of CNXs. A method for the detection of CNBr and CNI in solution was established using a liquid–liquid extraction/gas chromatography/electron capture detector. Specifically, the method was used to investigate the stability of CNBr and CNI in drinking water, especially in the presence of chlorine and sulfite, and it showed good reproducibility (relative standard deviation <3.05%), high sensitivity (method detection limit <100 ng/L), and good recovery (91.49–107.24%). Degradation kinetic studies of cyanogen halides were conducted, and their degradation rate constants were detected for their hydrolysis, chlorination, and sulfite reduction. For hydrolysis, upon increasing pH from 9.0 to 11.0, the rate constants of CNCl, CNBr, and CNI changed from 8 to 155 × 10−5 s−1, 1.1 to 34.2 × 10−5 s−1, and 1.5 to 6.2 × 10−5 s−1, respectively. In the presence of 1.0 mg/L chlorine, upon increasing pH from 7.0 to 10.0, the rate constants of CNCl, CNBr, and CNI changed from 36 to 105 × 10−5 s−1, 15.8 to 49.0 × 10−5 s−1, and 1.2 to 24.2 × 10−5 s−1, respectively. In the presence of 3 μmol/L sulfite, CNBr and CNI degraded in two phases. In the first phase, they degraded very quickly after the addition of sulfite, whereas, in the second phase, they degraded slowly with rate constants similar to those for hydrolysis. Owing to the electron-withdrawing ability of halogen atoms and the nucleophilic ability of reactive groups such as OH− and ClO−, the rate constants of cyanogen halides increased with increasing pH, and they decreased in the order of CNCl > CNBr > CNI during hydrolysis and chlorination. The hydrolysis and chlorination results could be used to assess the stability of cyanogen halides in water storage and distribution systems. The sulfite reduction results indicate that quenching residual oxidants with excess sulfite could underestimate the levels of cyanogen halides, especially for CNBr and CNI.

Ozonation of organic compounds in water and wastewater: A critical review

Ozonation has been applied in water treatment for more than a century, first for disinfection, later for oxidation of inorganic and organic pollutants. In recent years, ozone has been increasingly applied for enhanced municipal wastewater treatment for ecosystem protection and for potable water reuse. These applications triggered significant research efforts on the abatement efficiency of organic contaminants and the ensuing formation of transformation products. This endeavor was accompanied by developments in analytical and computational chemistry, which allowed to improve the mechanistic understanding of ozone reactions. This critical review assesses the challenges of ozonation of impaired water qualities such as wastewaters and provides an up-to-date compilation of the recent kinetic and mechanistic findings of ozone reactions with dissolved organic matter, various functional groups (olefins, aromatic compounds, heterocyclic compounds, aliphatic nitrogen-containing compounds, sulfur-containing compounds, hydrocarbons, carbanions, β-diketones) and antibiotic resistance genes.
