Oxygen Vacancy-Governed Opposite Catalytic Performance for C3H6 and C3H8 Combustion: The Effect of the Pt Electronic Structure and Chemisorbed Oxygen Species

Acid etching post-treatment enhanced fungal sterilization performance of copper-manganese-cerium oxide in liquid and aerosol: Materials and molecular biological mechanisms

Bioaerosol is one of the main ways to spread respiratory infectious diseases. In order to further improve the sterilization efficiency of copper-manganese-cerium oxide (CuMnCeOx), the post-treatment method based on acid etching was adopted. The results showed that sterilization efficiency of the treated CuMnCeOx could reach 99% in aerosol with space velocity of 1400 h-1. L(+)-ascorbic acid successfully promoted the formation of Cu+, oxygen vacancies and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the surface of the treated CuMnCeOx. During sterilization in liquid system, the transcriptome identified 316 differentially expressed genes, including 270 up-regulated genes and 46 down-regulated genes. Differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in cell wall (GO:0005618) and external encapsulating structure (GO:0030312). Up-regulated genes were shown in regulation of reactive oxygen species biosynthetic processes (GO:1903409, GO:1903426, GO:1903428) and positive regulation all of reactive oxygen species metabolic process (GO:2000379), indicating that ROS induced cell death by destroying cell wall.

Oxygen vacancy-rich Ag/CuO nanoarray mesh fabricated by laser ablation for efficient bacterial inactivation

The contamination of drinking water by microbes is a critical health concern, underscoring the need for safe, reliable, and efficient methods to treat pathogenic microorganisms. While most sterilization materials are available in powder form, this presents safety risks and challenges in recycling. Herein, this study reports the preparation of an innovative copper oxide supported silver monolithic nanoarray mesh with abundant oxygen vacancies (Ag/CuO-VO) by laser ablation. The instantaneous high temperature caused by laser ablation preserves the material's original structure while generating oxygen vacancies on the CuO surface. The Ag/CuO-VO mesh demonstrated a remarkable ability to inactivate over 99% of Escherichia coli (E. Coli) within 20 min. The oxygen vacancies in the Ag/CuO-VO enhance interactions between oxygen species and the Ag/CuO-VO, leading to the accumulation of large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The generated ROS effectively disrupt both layers of the bacterial cell wall - the peptidoglycan and the phospholipid - as confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, culminating in cell death. This research presents a monolithic material capable of inactivating pathogenic microorganisms efficiently, offering a significant advancement in water sterilization technology.

Role of the In-Situ-Formed Surface (Pt-S-O)-Ti Active Structure in SO2-Promoted C3H8 Combustion over a Pt/TiO2 Catalyst

Typically, SO2 unavoidably deactivates catalysts in most heterogeneous catalytic oxidations. However, for Pt-based catalysts, SO2 exhibits an extraordinary boosting effect in propane catalytic oxidation, but the promotive mechanism remains contentious. In this study, an in situ-formed tactful (Pt-S-O)-Ti structure was concluded to be a key factor for Pt/TiO2 catalysts with a substantial SO2 tolerance ability. The experiments and theoretical calculations confirm that the high degree of hybridization and orbital coupling between Pt 5d and S 3p orbitals enable more charge transfer from Pt to S species, thus forming the (Pt-S-O)-Ti structure with the oxygen atom dissociated from the chemisorbed O2 adsorbed on oxygen vacancies. The active oxygen atom in the (Pt-S-O)-Ti active structure is a robust site for C3H8 adsorption, leading to a better C3H8 combustion performance. This work can provide insights into the rational design of chemical bonds for high SO2 tolerance catalysts, thereby improving economic and environmental benefits.

General Synthesis of High-Entropy Oxide Nanofibers

The discovery of high-entropy oxides (HEOs) in 2015 has provided a family of potential solid catalysts, due to their tunable components, abundant defects or lattice distorts, excellent thermal stability (ΔG↓ = ΔH - TΔS↑), and so on. When facing the heterogeneous catalysis by HEOs, the micrometer bulky morphology and low surface areas (e.g., <10 m2 g-1) by traditional synthesis methods obstructed their way. In this work, an electrospinning method to fabricate HEO nanofibers with diameters of 50-100 nm was demonstrated. The key point lay in the formation of one-dimensional filamentous precursors, during which the uniform dispersion of five metal species with disordered configuration would help to crystallize into single-phase HEOs at lower temperatures: inverse spinel (Cr0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Fe0.2)3O4 (400 °C), perovskite La(Mn0.2Cu0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Fe0.2)O3 (500 °C), spinel Ni0.2Mg0.2Cu0.2Mn0.2Co0.2)Al2O4 (550 °C), and cubic Ni0.2Mg0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2Co0.2O (750 °C). As a proof-of-concept, (Ni3MoCoZn)Al12O24 nanofiber exhibited good activity (CH4 Conv. > 96%, CO2 Conv. > 99%, H2/CO ≈ 0.98), long-time stability (>100 h) for the dry reforming of methane (DRM) at 700 °C without coke deposition, better than control samples (Ni3MoCoZn)Al12O24-Coprecipitation-700 (CH4 Conv. < 3%, CO2 Conv. < 7%). The reaction mechanism of DRM was studied by in situ infrared spectroscopy, CO2-TPD, and CO2/CH4-TPSR. This electrospinning method provides a synthetic route for HEO nanofibers for target applications.

Electron Donation from Boron Suboxides via Strong p-d Orbital Hybridization Boosts Molecular O2 Activation on Ru/TiO2 for Low-Temperature Dibromomethane Oxidation

Low-temperature catalytic oxidation is of significance to the degradation of halogenated volatile organic compounds (HVOCs) to avoid hazardous byproducts with low energy consumption. Efficient molecular oxygen (O2) activation is pivotal to it but usually limited by the insufficient electron cloud density at the metal center. Herein, Ru-B catalysts with enhanced electron density around Ru were designed to achieve efficient O2 activation, realizing dibromomethane (DBM) degradation T90 at 182 °C on RuB1/TiO2 (about 30 °C lower than pristine Ru/TiO2) with a TOFRu value of 0.055 s-1 (over 8 times that of Ru/TiO2). Compared to the limited electron transfer (0.02 e) on pristine Ru/TiO2, the Ru center gained sufficient negative charges (0.31 e) from BOx via strong p-d orbital hybridization. The Ru-B site then acted as the electron donor complexing with the 2π* antibonding orbital of O2 to realize the O2 dissociative activation. The reactive oxygen species formed thereby could initiate a fast conversion and oxidation of formate intermediates, thus eventually boosting the low-temperature catalytic activity. Furthermore, we found that the Ru-B sites for O2 activation have adaptation for pollutant removal and multiple metal availability. Our study shed light on robust O2 activation catalyst design based on electron density adjustment by boron.

A new attempt to control volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution - Modification technology of biomass for adsorption of VOCs gas

The detrimental impact of volatile organic compounds on the surroundings is widely acknowledged, and effective solutions must be sought to mitigate their pollution. Adsorption treatment is a cost-effective, energy-saving, and flexible solution that has gained popularity. Biomass is an inexpensive, naturally porous material with exceptional adsorbent properties. This article examines current research on volatile organic compounds adsorption using biomass, including the composition of these compounds and the physical (van der Waals) and chemical mechanisms (Chemical bonding) by which porous materials adsorb them. Specifically, the strategic modification of the surface chemical functional groups and pore structure is explored to facilitate optimal adsorption, including pyrolysis, activation, heteroatom doping and other methods. It is worth noting that biomass adsorbents are emerging as a highly promising strategy for green treatment of volatile organic compounds pollution in the future. Overall, the findings signify that biomass modification represents a viable and competent approach for eliminating volatile organic compounds from the environment.

Surface oxygen vacancy-dependent molecular oxygen activation for propane combustion over α-MnO2

Oxygen vacancies (OV), as the sites of molecular oxygen adsorption and activation, play an important role in the catalytic combustion process of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Revealing the relationship between OV concentration and molecular oxygen activation behavior is of significance to construct the efficient catalysts. Herein, α-MnO2 with different OV concentrations was prepared to investigate the molecular oxygen activation for C3H8 combustion. It is disclosed that the enhanced OV concentration in α-MnO2 induced the reconfiguration of surface metal atoms, resulting in the transformation of oxygen activation configuration from end-on mode to side-on mode. Oxygen molecules in side-on mode possessed more localized electron density and weaker coordination bond strength with surrounding Mn atoms, which were more favorable to adsorb C3H8 molecules and activate C-H bond for the improved combustion performance. This work provides a new understanding to reveal that the increased OV concentration contributes to more efficient VOCs combustion.

Tuning Oxygen Vacancies in Oxides by Configurational Entropy

Tuning surface oxygen vacancies is important for oxide catalysts. Doping elements with different chemical valence states or different atomic radii into host oxides is a common method to create oxygen vacancies. However, the concentration of oxygen vacancies in oxide catalysts is still limited to the amount of foreign dopants that can be tolerated (generally less than 10% atoms). Herein, a principle of engineering the configurational entropy to tune oxygen vacancies was proposed. First, the positive relationship between the configuration entropy and the formation energy of oxygen vacancies (Eov) in 16 model oxides was estimated by a DFT calculation. To verify this, single binary oxides and high-entropy quinary oxides (HEOs) were prepared. Indeed, the concentration of oxygen vacancies in HEOs (Oβ/α = 3.66) was higher compared to those of single or binary oxides (Oβ/α = 0.22-0.75) by O1s XPS, O2-TPD, and EPR. Interestingly, the reduction temperatures of transition metal ions in HEOs were generally lower than that in single-metal oxides by H2-TPR. The lower Eov of HEOs may contribute to this feature, which was confirmed by in situ XPS and in situ XRD. Moreover, with catalytic CO/C3H6 oxidation as a model, the high-entropy (MnCuCo3NiFe)xOy catalyst showed higher catalytic activity than single and binary oxides, which experimentally verified the hypothesis of the DFT calculation. This work may inspire more oxide catalysts with preferred oxygen vacancies.

Surface Lattice-Embedded Pt Single-Atom Catalyst on Ceria-Zirconia with Superior Catalytic Performance for Propane Oxidation

Tuning the metal-support interaction and coordination environment of single-atom catalysts can help achieve satisfactory catalytic performance for targeted reactions. Herein, via the facile control of calcination temperatures for Pt catalysts on pre-stabilized Ce0.9Zr0.1O2 (CZO) support, Pt single atoms (Pt1) with different strengths of Pt-CeO2 interaction and coordination environment were successfully constructed. With the increase in calcination temperature from 350 to 750 °C, a stronger Pt-CeO2 interaction and higher Pt-O-Ce coordination number were achieved due to the reaction between PtOx and surface Ce3+ species as well as the migration of Pt1 into the surface lattice of CZO. The Pt/CZO catalyst calcined at 750 °C (Pt/CZO-750) exhibited a surprisingly higher C3H8 oxidation activity than that calcined at 550 °C (Pt/CZO-550). Through systematic characterizations and reaction mechanism study, it was revealed that the higher concentration of surface Ce3+ species/oxygen vacancies and the stronger Pt-CeO2 interaction on Pt/CZO-750 could better facilitate the activation of oxygen to oxidize C3H8 into reactive carbonate/carboxyl species and further promote the transformation of these intermediates into gaseous CO2. The Pt/CZO-750 catalyst can be a potential candidate for the catalytic removal of hydrocarbons from vehicle exhaust.

Insight into the Effect of Oxygen Vacancy Prepared by Different Methods on CuO/Anatase Catalyst for CO Catalytic Oxidation

In this study, CuO loaded on anatase TiO2 catalysts (CuO/anatase) with oxygen vacancies was synthesized via reduction treatments by NaHB4 and H2 (CuO/anatase-B, CuO/anatase-H), respectively. The characterizations suggest that different reduction treatments bring different concentration of oxygen vacancies in the CuO/anatase catalysts, which finally affect the CO catalytic performance. The CuO/anatase-B and CuO/anatase-H exhibit CO conversion of 90% at 182 and 198 °C, respectively, which is lower than what occurred for CuO/anatase (300 °C). The XRD, Raman, and EPR results show that the amount of the oxygen vacancies of the CuO/anatase-H is the largest, indicating a stronger reduction effect of H2 than NaHB4 on the anatase surface. The in situ DRIFTS results exhibit that the Cu sites are the adsorption sites of CO, and the oxygen vacancies on the anatase can active the O2 molecules into reactive oxygen species. According to the in situ DRIFTS results, it can be concluded that in the CO oxidation reaction, only the CuO/anatase-H catalyst can be carried out by the Mvk mechanism, which greatly improves its catalytic efficiency. This study explained the reaction mechanisms of CO oxidation on various anatase surfaces, which offers detailed insights into how to prepare suitable catalysts for low-temperature oxidation reactions.

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have a significant effect on the performance of supported noble-metal catalysts for volatile organic compound (VOC) elimination. Herein, the strength of the SMSI of Pt/OMS-2 between Pt and the OMS-2 support is regulated by simply changing calcination temperatures, and the catalyst calcined at 300 °C (Pt/OMS-2-300) performs the best in the catalytic combustion of toluene. Through systematic structural characterizations, it is revealed that much more Pt²⁺-O_v-Mn^δ+ species are formed in Pt/OMS-2-300, which can help facilitate the generation of more reactive oxygen species and promote lattice oxygen mobility. Moreover, the results of in situ DRIFTS experiments further confirm that abundant Pt²⁺-O_v-Mn^δ+ species at the Pt-MnO₂ interface on Pt/OMS-2-300 can better enhance the adsorption and activation of toluene, thus boosting the catalytic performance in toluene combustion. This newly developed strategy of thermal-driven regulation of the SMSI provides a novel perspective for constructing highly efficient catalysts for VOC emission control.

Highly Efficient Oxidation of Propane at Low Temperature over a Pt-Based Catalyst by Optimization Support

Pt-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention in environmental protection applications, especially in the catalytic destruction of light alkane pollutants. However, developing a satisfying platinum catalyst with high activity, excellent water-resistance, and practical suitability for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperature is challenging. In this study, the Pt catalyst supported on the selected Nb₂O₅ oxide exhibited an efficient catalytic activity in propane oxidation and exceeded that of most catalysts reported in the literature. More importantly, the Pt/Nb₂O₅ catalyst maintained excellent activity and durability even after high-temperature aging at 700 °C and under harsh working conditions, such as a certain degree of moisture, high space velocity, and composite pollutants. The excellent performance of the Pt/Nb₂O₅ catalyst was attributed to the abundant metallic Pt species stabilized on the surface of Nb₂O₅, which prompted the C-H bond dissociation ability as the rate-determining step. Furthermore, propane was initially activated via oxidehydrogenation and followed the acrylate species path as a more efficient propane oxidation path on the Pt/Nb₂O₅ surface. Overall, Pt/Nb₂O₅ can be considered a promising catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of alkanes from industrial sources and could provide inspiration for designing superb catalysts for the oxidation of light alkanes.

Synergistic Effect of Reactive Oxygen Species in Photothermocatalytic Removal of VOCs from Cooking Oil Fumes over Pt/CeO2/TiO2

The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from cooking oil fumes are very complex and do harm to humans and the environment. Herein, we develop the high-efficiency and energy-saving synergistic photothermocatalytic oxidation approach to eliminate the mixture of heptane and hexanal, the representative VOCs with high concentrations in cooking oil fumes. The Pt/CeO₂/TiO₂ catalyst with nanosized Pt particles was prepared by the simple hydrothermal and impregnation methods, and the physicochemical properties of the catalyst were measured using numerous techniques. The Pt/CeO₂/TiO₂ catalyst eliminated the VOC mixture at low light intensity (100 mW cm^-2) and low temperature (200 °C). In addition, it showed 25 h of catalytic stability and water resistance (water concentration up to 20 vol %) at 140 or 190 °C. It is concluded that O₂ picked up the electrons from Pt to generate the ^•O₂^- species, which were transformed to the O₂^2- and O^- species after the rise in temperature. In the presence of water, the ^•OH species induced by light irradiation on the catalyst surface and the ^•OOH species formed via the thermal reaction were both supplementary oxygen species for VOC oxidation. The synergistic interaction of photo- and thermocatalysis was generated by the reactive oxygen species.

Boosting catalytic stability for VOCs removal by constructing PtCu alloy structure with superior oxygen activation behavior

The elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the process of industry production is of great significance to improve the atmospheric environment. Herein the catalytic oxidation of the toluene and iso-hexane mixture, as the typical components from furniture paint industry, and the enhancement in the catalytic stability for toluene oxidation were investigated in detail. The formation rate of active oxygen species was very important for the development of the catalyst with high catalytic stability. Compared with the Pt/M catalyst, the Pt-Cu/M catalyst owned stronger ability of VOCs adsorption and gaseous oxygen activation by introducing additional sites for activating O₂. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood (adsorbed oxygen) and Mars-van Krevelen (lattice oxygen) mechanism existed in toluene oxidation over the present Pt/M and Pt-Cu/M catalysts, respectively. The change in the involved active oxygen species during toluene oxidation was resulted from the Pt-Cu alloy structure. In addition to the adsorption of O₂, a part of active lattice oxygen species can also be replenished by the migration of bulk lattice oxygen over Pt-Cu/M. With a rise in the reaction temperature, weakly adsorbed iso-hexane could be timely reacted with the more active lattice oxygen species to keep the catalytic stability over the Pt/M and Pt-Cu/M catalysts. Generally, we not only prepared a promising material for the catalytic removal of VOCs from the furniture paint industry, but also provided a new strategy for the generation of active oxygen species, making the catalyst exhibit high catalytic oxidation stability.

The preparation of ultrastable Al3+ doped CeO2 supported Au catalysts: Strong metal-support interaction for superior catalytic activity towards CO oxidation

The classical strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) plays a key role in improving thermal stability for supported Au catalysts. However, it always decreases the catalytic activity because of the encapsulation of Au species by support. Herein, we demonstrate that Al³⁺ is a functional additive which could effectively improve both catalytic activity and sintering resistant property for H₂ pretreated Al³⁺ doped CeO₂ supported Au (AuCeAl) catalyst at high temperature. The physical characterization and in-situ DRIFTS results provide insight that more oxygen vacancies generated by Al³⁺ doping could be as preferential adsorption sites for CO molecules when the encapsulation of Au species occurred, which is certificated by an accelerated formation of bicarbonate species. In the meantime, smaller Au nanoparticles with higher dispersion (2.8 nm, 85.63%) is achieved in AuCeAl catalysts, compared with that in CeO₂ supported Au (AuCe) catalysts (5.1 nm, 36.17%). Additionally, the as-prepared AuCeAl catalysts also have superior catalytic performance even after calcination at 800 °C in air.
