Environmental Injustices of Leaks from Urban Natural Gas Distribution Systems: Patterns among and within 13 U.S. Metro Areas

Variation in Proximity to Oil and Gas Well Pads across Race-Ethnicity and Income Groups in Colorado: An Inquiry into Distributive Environmental Justice Patterns

Proximity to oil and gas (OG) wells is associated with health risks. Evidence on the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and OG well proximity is mixed. To investigate this question in Colorado, we combined OG location data with data on birthing people's race-ethnicity and Medicaid eligibility from the state's birth registry. We applied two OG proximity definitions: (1) living within 2,000 ft of an active well and (2) OG well density (inverse distance-weighted sum of wells within 2 miles). Our analysis includes people who gave birth between 2007 and 2017 and resided in one of seven OG-producing counties across three different OG basins. In the Denver-Julesburg basin (DJB), which accounted for 93% of the study sample, White and Medicaid ineligible people are more proximate than Hispanic and Medicaid eligible people. In some DJB counties, People of Color (non-Hispanic) are more proximate than Hispanic people. In the Piceance basin, White non-Hispanic people have higher proximity than Hispanic people, while Medicaid eligibility is associated with higher proximity. In the San Juan basin, Hispanic and Medicaid-eligible people were more proximate than White and Medicaid-ineligible people. Further research should examine differential exposure/proximity across other sensitive groups, and policies should pursue equal protection from OG well exposures.

Indoor Air Sources of Outdoor Air Pollution: Health Consequences, Policy, and Recommendations: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report

Indoor sources of air pollution worsen indoor and outdoor air quality. Thus, identifying and reducing indoor pollutant sources would decrease both indoor and outdoor air pollution, benefit public health, and help address the climate crisis. As outdoor sources come under regulatory control, unregulated indoor sources become a rising percentage of the problem. This American Thoracic Society workshop was convened in 2022 to evaluate this increasing proportion of indoor contributions to outdoor air quality. The workshop was conducted by physicians and scientists, including atmospheric and aerosol scientists, environmental engineers, toxicologists, epidemiologists, regulatory policy experts, and pediatric and adult pulmonologists. Presentations and discussion sessions were centered on 1) the generation and migration of pollutants from indoors to outdoors, 2) the sources and circumstances representing the greatest threat, and 3) effective remedies to reduce the health burden of indoor sources of air pollution. The scope of the workshop was residential and commercial sources of indoor air pollution in the United States. Topics included wood burning, natural gas, cooking, evaporative volatile organic compounds, source apportionment, and regulatory policy. The workshop concluded that indoor sources of air pollution are significant contributors to outdoor air quality and that source control and filtration are the most effective measures to reduce indoor contributions to outdoor air. Interventions should prioritize environmental justice: Households of lower socioeconomic status have higher concentrations of indoor air pollutants from both indoor and outdoor sources. We identify research priorities, potential health benefits, and mitigation actions to consider (e.g., switching from natural gas to electric stoves and transitioning to scent-free consumer products). The workshop committee emphasizes the benefits of combustion-free homes and businesses and recommends economic, legislative, and education strategies aimed at achieving this goal.

Along the energy justice continuum: An examination of energy disposal through the lens of feminist community based participatory action research

Energy justice research tends to focus on inequalities that result from energy systems, including from fossil fuel extraction to production, distribution, and consumption. However, little research has investigated local effects of the disposal of waste products from fossil fuel extraction. To better understand these impacts, we employed a case study approach with qualitative interviews of residents of Kettleman City, a rural community in California's Central Valley (USA) that hosts a hazardous waste landfill which accepts predominantly waste from fossil fuel production. Informed by a novel feminist community-based participatory action research approach (CBPAR), interview data were collected from residents in the Summer of 2019 and analyzed using deductive and inductive coding strategies. Resident interviews highlighted the disproportionate distribution of pollution and environmental degradation shouldered by the community along with their experiences of adverse health and social impacts. Our analysis revealed the importance of incorporating an intersectional perspective to frame resident experiences of energy injustice. Our research highlights the untapped potential of feminist-informed CBPAR to catalyze change and challenge the production of energy injustice from energy waste disposal.
