Accounting of the Use and Emissions of Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compounds (PCBs) in India, 1951-2100

Characterization of stormwater runoff in the powai region of Mumbai

Urban stormwater runoff could be a significant non-point source of surface water pollution during India's monsoon season (June - September). This study aims to characterize the stormwater runoff in the Powai region of Mumbai and investigate interlinkages between precipitation characteristics and runoff quality. The levels of conventional water quality parameters (physical, chemical, microbiological) and emerging contaminants in the runoff were determined. Runoff samples were collected from various outfall locations (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4 and SL5) which drain into the Powai Lake. Runoff sampling was conducted for ten storm events spread over the 2022 and 2023 monsoon seasons. Two outfall locations (SL4, SL5) convey runoff originating primarily from an institutional township, and have reported the lowest organic loads and fecal contamination. However, runoff within the township contains elevated levels of metals such as iron, lead and Aluminum. In addition, emerging contaminants such as phthalates, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products were detected in the runoff. The runoff outside the township (SL1, SL2, SL3) had low DO levels and highest mean concentrations of TSS, BOD, and oil and grease. The potential mixture of untreated sewage with runoff was identified as the probable cause for low DO, which was further substantiated by the high fecal coliform loads (1600 MPN/100 mL). The findings from this study identify runoff as one of the dominant causes of degrading water quality and will serve as a reference to further scientific efforts in quantifying the pollutant loads, and development of export coefficients for the Powai Lake watershed.

Photodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on suspended particles from the Yellow River under sunlight irradiation: QSAR model and mechanism analysis

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as a class of hydrophobic organic pollutants, are widely found in river sediments and suspended particles, and the environmental fate of different PCBs can be better understood by investigating their photochemical transformation process. In this study, the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model between the photodegradation rate constants of 17 PCBs adsorbed on Yellow River suspended particles in water (as a typical heterogeneous photodegradation system) and the physicochemical parameters of PCBs was constructed by SPSS and machine learning. The model showed that the more hydrophobicity of the molecule, the more positive charge carried by the aromatic C atoms, and the presence of chlorine atoms adjacent to the carbon bridge could all enhance the photochemical activity of PCBs. From the combined analysis of rate constants, quenching experiments and theoretical calculations, it was revealed for the first time that in natural suspended particle containing organic matter, the higher concentration of •O2- and 1O2 in the hydrophobic zone contributed more to the more hydrophobic PCBs, while •OH in the hydrophilic zone played a major role in the degradation of the less hydrophobic PCBs. Findings of this study would deepen the understanding of the degradation mechanism of hydrophobic pollutants by active species in complex environments.

Alps at risk: High-mountain lakes as reservoirs of persistent and emerging contaminants

Despite their remote locations, high-mountain lakes located in the Alps are vulnerable to chemical pollution. This discussion explores the important aspects of these lakes as repositories of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs), elucidating their sources and implications for both the environment and human health. In terms of the presence of POPs in high-altitude lakes of the Alps, 14 studies have been identified examining the occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyls, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane an its metabolites, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The bulk of research on POPs in high-mountain lakes is concentrated in the Italian Alps (63%), followed by Switzerland (22%), Austria (12%), and France (3%), respectively. Sediment is predominantly investigated (65%), followed by fish (33%) and water (2%). Similarly, in relation to the presence of CECs in high-mountain lakes of the Alps, six studies have been identified investigating the occurrence of musks, perfluorinated compounds, and microplastics. Investigations into CECs predominantly occur in Switzerland (42%), France (33%), and Italy (25%), with fish samples (muscle and liver) being the primary focus (46%), followed by sediment (17%) and water (17%). Other compartments like zooplankton, frog/tadpoles, and snow remain less explored. The discussion also shed light on various pathways through which pollutants reach these remote landscapes, including atmospheric transport, glacial meltwater, and human activities. Protecting these pristine peaks demands concerted efforts encompassing ongoing research, vigilant monitoring, and dedicated conservation initiatives.

Complex roles for sulfation in the toxicities of polychlorinated biphenyls

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic toxicants derived from legacy pollution sources and their formation as inadvertent byproducts of some current manufacturing processes. Metabolism of PCBs is often a critical component in their toxicity, and relevant metabolic pathways usually include their initial oxidation to form hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs). Subsequent sulfation of OH-PCBs was originally thought to be primarily a means of detoxication; however, there is strong evidence that it may also contribute to toxicities associated with PCBs and OH-PCBs. These contributions include either the direct interaction of PCB sulfates with receptors or their serving as a localized precursor for OH-PCBs. The formation of PCB sulfates is catalyzed by cytosolic sulfotransferases, and, when transported into the serum, these metabolites may be retained, taken up by other tissues, and subjected to hydrolysis catalyzed by intracellular sulfatase(s) to regenerate OH-PCBs. Dynamic cycling between PCB sulfates and OH-PCBs may lead to further metabolic activation of the resulting OH-PCBs. Ultimate toxic endpoints of such processes may include endocrine disruption, neurotoxicities, and many others that are associated with exposures to PCBs and OH-PCBs. This review highlights the current understanding of the complex roles that PCB sulfates can have in the toxicities of PCBs and OH-PCBs and research on the varied mechanisms that control these roles.
