Back Accumulation of Diffusive Gradients in Thin-Films Devices with a Stack of Resin Discs To Assess Availability of Metal Cations to Biota in Natural Waters

Determination of diffusion coefficients through gels with non-negligible finite-volume effects in the compartments of the diffusion cell

Diffusion cells are used to measure diffusion coefficients (DM) in gels. These measurements are of interest to understand and predict the availability of nutritive or toxic chemical species in waters, soils and sediments. When the diffusive flux from the donor to the acceptor compartment is constant (steady-state regime), DM is determined from the slope of the linear plot of the acceptor concentration vs time. However, at long enough times, there is a non-negligible concentration depletion in the donor compartment concomitant to a concentration increase in the acceptor compartment. Accordingly, the accumulation plot bends downwards preventing a linear fitting. This is the case of metals whose solubility (especially depending on pH values) limits the concentration in the donor compartment and the time required to reach concentrations above the limit of quantification in the acceptor compartment implies a non-negligible decrease of the concentration in the donor compartment. In this work, a simple linear regression is shown to provide the diffusion coefficient values from experiments exhibiting finite-volume effects. This expression is validated against rigorous numerical simulation as well as reported values in the literature. Diffusion coefficients of Zn, Ni and Pb in agarose cross-linked polyacrylamide (APA) gels (used in Diffusive Gradients in Thin-Film devices, DGT) are determined under finite-volume effects. The resulting values agree with those obtained under the standard linear regime.

Simultaneous measurement of labile U(VI) concentration and (234U/238U) activity ratio using a Monophos®-based Diffusive Gradients in thin-films sampler

BACKGROUND

In a context of environmental monitoring around installations related to the nuclear fuel cycle, the Diffusive Gradient in Thin-films (DGT) technique captures the integrated concentration of U isotopes in their native environment, yielding comprehensive data on U origin (anthropogenic vs natural), total concentration, and mobility. However, for common deployment times (4-5 days) in moderately basic waters, none of the commercially available binding gels is adapted to measure the total U concentration. So, the development of novel DGT binding gels is timely.

RESULTS

A new DGT sampler, using the Monophos® resin, as well as a new model for the interpretation of the DGT flux, has been successfully developed to measure the labile U concentration (which was also its total concentration) in moderately basic waters (pH ≈ 8). The model accounts for the penetration of uranyl carbonate complexes into the binding gel. Monophos-DGT samplers were able to quantify the total U concentration (accuracy >90 %) in three different mineral basic waters and in a synthetic seawater in laboratory experiments, as well as in situ in the rivers Essonne and Œuf, France. Ion interferences (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3-), critical when using Chelex and Metsorb resins as binding agents, were overcome by using the new DGT sampler, thus allowing for a longer linear accumulation of U in the tested matrices and, above all, a better detection of U minor isotopes improving the potential of using DGT samplers for water source tracing through isotopic measurements.

SIGNIFICANCE

The use of the new DGT sampler and the new model for the interpretation of DGT flux is recommended to improve the accuracy of total U concentration determinations in field applications. Moreover, simultaneous elemental and isotopic measurements were successfully performed during field application, confirming new perspectives for environmental applications such as identification of U pollution sources by using isotopic signatures.

Principles, applications, and limitations of diffusive gradients in thin films induced fluxed in soils and sediments

The diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique serves as a passive sampling method, inducing analyte transport and concentration. Its application is widespread in assessing labile components of metals, organic matter, and nutrients across various environmental media such as water, sediments, and saturated soils. The DGT devices effectively reduce the porewater concentration through irreversible binding of solutes, consequently promoting the release of labile species from the soil/sediment solid phase. However, the precise quantification of simultaneous adsorption and desorption of labile species using DGT devices alone remains a challenge. To address this challenge, the DGT-Induced Fluxes in Soils and Sediments (DIFS) model was developed. This model simulates analyte kinetics in solid phases, solutions, and binding resins by incorporating factors such as soil properties, resupply parameters, and kinetic principles. While the DIFS model has been iteratively improved to increase its accuracy in portraying kinetic behavior in soil/sediment, researchers' incomplete comprehension of it still results in unrealistic fitting outcomes and an oversight of the profound implications posed by kinetic parameters during implementation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the optimization and utilization of DIFS models, encompassing fundamental concepts behind DGT devices and DIFS models, the kinetic interpretation of DIFS parameters, and instances where the model has been applied to study soils and sediments. It also highlights preexisting limitations of the DIFS model and offers suggestions for more precise modeling in real-world environments.
